CARTOON ANSWER:

THE TWINS GOT IN TROUBLE A LOT.  THEY WERE OFTEN —

OUOGOPOWDNT = UP “TWO” NO GOOD

Good morning everyone and happy Thursday!  Today’s clue words were the most challenging we’ve seen so far this week with DENTAL being my pick for the most difficult one.  OUTDO would be my pick for the runner up, but in a distant second.  Moving along to the cartoon, I read the sentence first and then looked at the answer layout.  It was an instant solve with the solution popping out at me for some reason.  The cartoon featured two mischievous twin boys in the kitchen “stealing” some delicious treats.  Their heist was foiled when the law entered the room and caught them red handed.  Sometimes that’s the way the cookie crumbles and they learned a valuable life lesson.  It was an excellent display of teamwork, but mom looks too furious to have even noticed.  The chips will now fall where they may, but something tells me this won’t be their last crime spree.  Have a terrific Thursday and I’ll see you tomorrow!

  1. Good morning, Mike. LOL…I don’t know which one I like more…”the cookie crumbles” or the “chips falling where they may”! Two great puns! ⭐️⭐️ Great post! 🙋🏻

    • Dental was the stumper for me,but the 3 letter word in quotes, led me to “two” and the ultimate solution.

  2. 🎶”DOUBLE your pleasure, double your fun, with DOUBLEmint, DOUBLEmint, DOUBLEmint gum…”🎶

👬 Growing up you always think you’re slick and oh so wise
Until you’re busted and your Mom cuts you right down to size,
Whatever made us think that we could really get away
With all the foolishness we pulled throughout a given day?
We’d end up caught, we’d pay the price, the discipline set in
And God forbid while during the scold you broke out in a grin!
I never got it through my head, you’d think it was of wood
I always thought, “She’ll never know…” But yes, she always would…
That’s why I always wondered as I would lay in bed
Could it be true, how could she though…Have eyes behind her head?…👬

Today’s words are easy enough, all old favorites. Our cartoon, gives UP the answer easily enough, TWO. Jeff shows us twin boys “Caught with their hands in the cookie jar”. Always liked that expression, it’s sweet. The little imps, are shown in blue and brown shirts, but barefoot and in diapers. No pants…DOUBLE EXPOSURE here! One twin is standing on the others shoulders, so that he can reach UP to get the cookies. 🎶”He ain’t heavy, He’s my brother…”🎶 (I couldn’t resist)! So, Mom walks in, and catches the little WOMB MATES in the act. This poor Mom must have her hands full…These two are DOUBLE TROUBLE! Maybe she should get an Au PAIR to help out! Anyway, the dialogue tells us she thought it was TWO quiet, and she’s probably thinking…”Hmm, what stunt are they pulling now”. And, she was right! Those STUNT DOUBLES are “UP ‘TWO’ NO GOOD!! Great pun! Three cheers for the Jumble Guys…I mean, TWO cheers for the Jumble Guys! Eye candy? Might take a pass today…Blonde Mom, blond twins, nothin’ shakin’…Well, the twin on the bottom is, now that Mom’s here…and so’s the Cookie Jar…The Cookie Jar? I can’t pick the Cookie Jar, can I? Candy AND Cookies! DOUBLE sweets today? Hmm…(Is this where the ‘DENTAL’ comes in)? So there you have it, Folks! Done! Have a great day…🙋🏻

And to all you TWINS out there…You may be a TWIN, but I bet you’re ONE OF A KIND to your Mom…👬

  3. The twin sisters tried to OUTDO each other in making a hot GUMBO but the PILLOW fight that resulted led to a double DENTAL disaster.

Here’s an attempt as using the clue words in a poem, but not very “angelic.”

    Underneath the mammoth weeping willow
The lovers napped each with a down pillow
They dreamed of the Louisiana gumbo
That gave dental stain that were jumbo
But when they awoke that same day
Their teeth were not the least bit gray.

Yeah pretty lame compared to Angela’s and I’m hoping she will do something more clever. Your post was a Thursday thumper Angela and I enjoyed it Also hoping that somebody out there will post the lyrics to a song with gumbo in it—begins with “Jambalya………and then I’m lost until it ends “filet gumbo.”??

    • Earl: 🎶Jambalaya🎶…Enjoy!

🎶Goodbye Joe, me gotta go, me oh, my oh
Me gotta go pole the pirogue down the bayou
My Yvonne, the sweetest one, me oh, my oh
Son of a gun, we’ll have big fun on the bayou

Jambalaya, and a crawfish pie and a file’ gumbo
‘Cause tonight I’m gonna see my ma chère amie-o
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-oh
Son of a gun, we’ll have big fun on the bayou

The Thibodeaux’s, the Fontenot’s, the place is buzzin’
Kinfolk come to see Yvonne by the dozen
Dress in style, and go hog wild, me oh, my oh
Son of a gun, we’ll have big fun on the bayou

Jambalaya, and a crawfish pie and a file’ gumbo
‘Cause tonight I’m gonna see my ma chère amie-o
Pick guitar, fill fruit jar and be gay-oh
Son of a gun, we’ll have big fun on the bayou🎶

Thursday Thumper! I love it! Thank you, Kind Sir! And there’s nothing lame about your ditty…
Angelic I love even more! 😉
Ok, I’ll write one for you…Give me a sec! 👬🙋🏻

    • Here you go, Earl. For you. It wasn’t easy, and I think it sounds as CORNY as the grits, but I gave it a shot. Definitely some odd words to combine!
Kudos to you again, it surely wasn’t lame….

GUMBO is delicious if prepared the correct way
Chefs are always trying to OUTDO another’s way
It’s warmth is such a comfort, it makes one feel all mellow
Like drifting off to sleep upon a soft sweet smelling PILLOW
The shellfish must be soft enough or DENTAL work may suffer
The corn grits often help out here, while serving as a buffer
The people of Louisiana sure gave us a gem…
And every time I eat GUMBO, I always think of them! 🙋🏻

      • You’ve made my day. Thanks for the poem and the song. I never would have remembered those lyrics and even trying to Google what I did know probably would not have done much good. “Your’e the tops, your’e the Mona Lisa.” etc. etc. etc.

        • LOL…🎶You’re the top! You’re a Waldorf Salad, You’re the top, you’re a Berlin Ballad…🎶 Cole Porter truly at his finest….!
You’re very welcome. I have a recording of Jambalaya. It definitely gets your “Toes tappin’ “!
And, as always, thank you, Kind Sir…Wishing you a great day! 🙋🏻
PS: I can’t wait to make to Gumbo now 😉!

  4. Good morning. Another solve though not that easy. Pillow took a second look and dental took a third and fourth look. The cartoon answer was not an instant read. I had to play around with the letters before getting the final answer like switch on for no. I knew the second word had to be two. All and all a fun day. Enjoyed everybody’s remark today, you are all in rare form. Until tomorrow stay well.

  5. For some reason I found this one easy today. Off to get a lesson from a client in brewing beer. We will be using some of my homegrown hops.

    Make it a great day!

    • Sounds interesting. Would love to be there and learn. My grandfather in Europe made wine and sold some of his grapes to the government. Always wished I could have been there to learn. My father said you can learn a lot by watching people work. He was so right. He also said whatever you do always do it to the best of your ability. That stuck with me throughout life. Even if it was just sweeping the sidewalk. Nothing satisfies more than doing it well. Especially if it’s solving jumble.

  6. For some reason I really struggled with dental. After I got past that one, no problem with the puzzle. Angela, I just read an article in the November Reader’s Digest about paronomasiacs (pun addicts) and couldn’t help but think of you. There apparently are pun competitions in different parts of the country: Punderdome 3000 in New York, Pundamonium in Seattle, the Great Durham Pun Championship in Durham North Carolina and the Bay Area Pun-Off here in San Francisco. They are described as hyper competitive groan- inducing affairs. With you penchant for clever puns you should surely considering entering these contests. Have a happy day everyone.

    • Hi Betty. Dental: The problem with these letters is, that once we see the ED, we’re caught in its clutches!. I think we’re programmed to think the word will end in ED. Thank you for your kind words. I’ve never heard of these competitions. I’d probably enjoy something like that, but I don’t know if I’d hold up under the pressure! 😂 I’m not really a competitive person at heart! I’m going to read the article, thanks so much for telling me! Hope you have a great day too! 👬🙋🏻

    • Great minds, Betty. I just sent Angela a link to the article in today’s Chronicle about the Bay Area Pun-Off, which I had never heard of. The writer is not really a great fan of puns, but liked the event:

  7. Hi all – It was gumbo and outdo, not dental, that took some extra effort. I got them by first finding gum and out.
Thanks for passing along some good advice, Paul.

  8. Hi all – Like most of you, DENTAL took the longest, and I also had to write the letters to get the answer – thought it was “In two” something.

Angela, glad you didn’t resist the Hollies song, and WOMB MATES is excellent!

JUST when I try to swear off commenting on words beginning with J or that have J in the middle, besides the Jambalaya and Jumble-aya today, I read a story yesterday that said:
“the Dodgers have some mad playoff JUJU working for them.”
Oy, Jumble barkeep, I quit. Make my word a double!

I will now go bury my head in my surrealistic PILLOW.

    • Thanks, Steve. I wasn’t sure about using the WOMB MATES, (Family blog and all), but it ended up part of my DELIVERY anyway.
The minute I looked at the kids, the Hollies starting “playing”, but the DOUBLEmint jingle just kept GNAWing at me! 😉 And, as you can see, the Hollies kept chomping at the BIT too. They held their own!
Don’t mess with the JUJU, powerful stuff! And it does look like the Dodgers got hold of it.
The DOUBLES on me 🍻. Sleep well, my Friend….👬🙋🏻

  9. Hi, all! Wonderful post, as usual, Mike. I thought the twins were our adorable grown-up girl twins back when they were small, but what do I know. Jerry says they are boys so I concede.

My hardest word was DENTAL. For the cartoon solve, I played with all the letters until I finally quit the two letter words with “o” (do, go, no, to, & on) and saw UP. The rest followed immediately.

    Have a terrific Thursday, all!

  10. Steve, I had never heard of the local Pun-Off here in S.F. Or anywhere else for that matter until I read the Reader’s Digest article. It sounds like fun and I think Angela is a good candidate.

      • Hey Steve and Betty…You know I can hear you…😂😂! Thank you both so much. I truly, deeply appreciate the sentiment, but you both don’t realize that I don’t think I could do the “big arena”. I don’t think I have that “competitive edge”. That being said, I do savor my own wit….! . 😉😉 So, Steve, my good Friend, as much as I do appreciate yours, you’re stealing my material! I was hoping my attempt at saying “Cajun Jambalaya” might get you to respond, but maybe you haven’t read it yet. I coined Jumble-aya a while back. (You can look it up). 😉 You’re free to use it, of course, but at least give it the asterisk! If you read the article you just gave me, first rule…you can’t “use a pun that had already been made”. So, as we still say Back East, “don’t jump in my grave”.
Please note, I’m smiling through all this, and I hope you will be too. We good? 🙋🏻

  11. Hi, Steve! What happens in just 2 weeks and 2 days from today?!! Woo hoo!! I can hardly wait!! You, John, Betty, & I, and many others, will be one hour closer to our Jumble Master Mike.

Loved your Jumble-aya, Breakfast of Champions. Very clever!! And delicious!

    • Hi Lelia – You mean the switch back to Standard Time? Not to get too picky (and I suspect not, to a math teacher), but I think you’re the only one getting an hour closer to Mike because your time doesn’t change. Betty and I will remain 3 hours earlier than he is. You and I will become an hour different too. Or did I completely misunderstand this?

HOWEVER – I do have an extremely good word puzzle I could post on IOW if you’re interested. The only reason I mention it is that you posted word-math problems, so you might be interested in that sort of thing.

      • Hi, Steve! I am so sorry that I forgot we are not in the same time zone. I heard you say something about it being a 3-hour difference for you so my brain put you in my time zone, which is not correct. You are in Pacific, but I’m in Mountain.

I’d like to take a rain check on the word puzzle. I’m very interested but today I had too many errands so will probably nap from now until dinner. See ya’ tomorrow.

  12. Hi, Earl! I wondered how in the world you would come up with a scenario, genre, or location that combined all of today’s clue words. All I could think of was eating GUMBO in New Orleans. You did a great job, but I’m sending this limerick anyway.

Earl, today’s words for your daily task,
To combine are more than we should ask.
    OUTDO & GUMBO,
    DENTAL & PILLOW.
No! Just go to the beach to walk & bask.

My dad sang Jambalaya to me dozens of times when I was small. I asked him what “Fill fruit jar” meant, and he said that while partying hard and enjoying all that delicious food, they filled their fruit jar with homemade whiskey.

      • Harry, my mom divorced my dad because he drank either Moonshine or Bootleg or both. It broke my heart. We lived in a dry county, meaning no liquor was sold legally anywhere in the county.

    • 🎵”You can burn my house, Steal my car,
Drink my liquor From an old fruitjar.
Do anything that you want to do, but uh-uh,
Honey, lay off of my shoes
Don’t you step on my blue suede shoes.”🎵

    • Thanks for the limerick Leila, very clever and I would love to go bask on the beach but here in Upstate New York it’s late October and they have snow fence up on the beach to try and direct wind-blown sand. But it is warm enough today and will be this weekend to ride my bike along the canal and enjoy the fall sunshine. As far as “Jambalaya” goes, I don’t think I ever understood all the words and was thrilled when Angela posted them for me to enjoy.
      Have a good day.

  13. Lelia Ann,Blue suede shoes is best song by Carl Perkins. If you get a chance listen to it. He did it first. Had bought it in 78 speed but brought it back and exchanged it for another. My brother liked something else more. I thing most songs (not all) are better by the original singer. But I do love Elvis.

    • Hey Paul, Steve here. A nice touch was that when Elvis went to RCA Victor from Sun records, they wanted him to record Blue Suede Shoes, but Elvis refused because it was Carl Perkins’ song, and only proceeded after getting Perkins’ permission. A real Country Gentleman.

    • To Lelia:
🎵”She’s a good girl, loves her mama
      Loves Jesus and America too
She’s a good girl, crazy ’bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too”🎵
