Good morning everyone and happy Thursday!  All of the clue words were easily solved today with no trouble whatsoever.  I’m hesitant to pick SPOIL as the most difficult anagram to decipher, but what the heck, why not?!  Moving forward to the cartoon, we revisit Big Ben but this time from the inside.  Two men are having a conversation as to the whereabouts of their fellow bloke while another man in a top hat appears to be pointing with delight at the only visible bell in the frame.  I’d assume that Jeff intended for the man in the top hat to be the keeper of the clock by giving him the distinguished look of a very important individual.  The letter layout for the final solve was very cryptic and kept the solution well hidden.  CLOCK immediately came to mind as part of the answer.  Crossing out the letters left the rest of the solution to appear almost instantly.  Have a terrific Thursday and I’ll see you tomorrow!

    🔔🔔 We know Big Ben is just the bell, and not the London tower
    Nor is it the big clock itself that’s rings upon the hour
    But over years and after time, the name has come to be
    Inclusive of the whole landmark that tourists come to see…
    Then what was once the Clock Tower five years ago became
    Elizabeth’s Tower, to celebrate her 50 years of reign…
    But bottom line in Westminster, no matter now or then..
    The bell, the clock, the whole tower will always be Big Ben 🔔🔔

    Today’s words once again seem to prove that 5 letters can be a HANDful! Even though they weren’t enough to throw a monkey WRENCH into the WORKS, they took a SECOND and a slight TICK of the eye to get. But, a MINUTE later, I was ready for HOUR puzzle. Jeff’s showing us “Big Ben” the bell, fronted by two workmen GEARing up to construct the CLOCK. It seems to be EARLY morning, since the dialogue tells us that the third worker, Colin is late. (And there’s that morning cup of coffee). One worker CHIMES in to say that Colin may have imbibed a bit too much the night before at the pub..Hmm. Too many drinks causing too many winks? I wonder if his lateness is TICKING them off. But the men who are there were on TIME, and they “CLOCKED IN”. Easy, breezy solve, with the cutest pun; it has a nice RING to it! As for eye candy? No, not the man in the formal attire…I’m taken with the rag hanging out of worker #1’s pocket. Just an old TIME memory. And that WINDS up today’s puzzle!
    So, there you have it Folks, my CLOCKIN’ SPEIL for the day. I wish I had more TIME this morning, because I feel this wasn’t up to my HIGH standards, but to be honest, CLOCK puns tend to TICK me off…so I really couldn’t SET the WHEELS in MOTION…I look FORWARD to tomorrow…

      • Thank you. I wondered too. So I asked Alexa if the Brits drank coffee in the morning…I didn’t have the TIME to look it up…And I knew she wouldn’t STRING me along…!

      • I doubt if the cup had tea, there would be a tea bag tag hanging over the edge–not sure when they were introduced but most Brits eschewed them well into the late 20th century, preferring their tea brewed the traditional way in a teapot and there would have been street vendors providing workers with tea– especially non- married ones. Some Brits drink coffee in the AM but I suspect when Ben was installed it would have been more costly than tea.
        Just my two cents worth

  4. Good morning. Easy solve and agree with Moose that clash took an extra minute to get. The cartoon answer was a cinch but I was disappointed with the answer. Being at the bar (Pub) I expected a different answer. Angela enjoyed you entry, you will never ever be wound too tight because of our everyday blog. My chimes got out to you today. Caroline enjoy your computer. I’m sure you will see a lot more of the cartoon now That’s the only reason I would prefer one over phone. We miss a lot in the drawing. Until tomorrow stay well

  5. The CLASH over who caused the shipment of prize avacados to SPOIL was more of a COMEDY than a tragedy but both sides tried to INVOKE federal inter-state commerce violations in their law suits.

    Agree that the clue words and solution did not cause difficulty. For me COMEDY took a bit longer than the others. I thought we had had a cartoon with Big Ben before–thanks for confirming my suspicions. Since I see the cartoon in color on line I was a little surprized at the colorful caps,shoes etc. Doubt if “blue-collar” workers would have been dressed so colorfully in 19th century London. But I’m nit picking. The elegant man also caught my attention–all he lacks is a monocle and a walking stick and he could be the Monopoly man.

    Test for Angela whose post I have not read yet, but I’m sure it’s brilliant: What does the worker in the right foreground have in his left hand?

    Fall has arrived here in Upstate New York after a four day record breaking heat wave–over 90 degrees for four days. Nice change.

    • Good morning, Anglophile! I forgot who we’re dealing with here! 😉 I went with a wrench in the right workers hand. As for the drink, you’re right. I’m thinking today. Back in the 1800’s there wouldn’t have been tea bags. Actually, they still brew thier tea today, don’t they? So, it probably is tea, not coffee. I really didn’t think it through. I concede to the expert! 😉🙋🏻

      • Please, I’m far from being an expert on anything—just know a little about a lot and that’s probably more dangerous than knowing nothing about something.
        At any rate, I don’t think you have answered my question yet. What does the worker have in his hand? In Brit speak?

        • Earl. That’s how I’ve always thought of myself, knowing a little bit about a lot. It’s served me well! But my Father always said that a little knowledge was a dangerous thing! So I try to read a lot…And once Google came along, I’ve become a genius! 😂😂 OK, The wrench…

          Well not here in America, it’s not one that’s been heard..
          The tool is one I’ve used a lot, I’m quite adept and knowing
          When ever I have trouble with a faucet that keeps flowing…
          But what you want, I hope I’m right..I’ll answer in this manner..

    • Hi Earl – Speaking of Brits and puns, that’s why John Lennon titled his 1965 book “A Spaniard in the Works.” It took me awhile before I learned enough British slang to appreciate it.
      His other book was “In His Own Write.”

  11. Hi, all! Solved 3 clue words during breakfast but had to self-jumble COMEDY once. No instant solve for me today so I wrote the letters and put a large dot under the letters for CLOCK, a technique I learned from you, Mike, when you once posted a pic of your work. Done. I used to put a line through or under the used letters, but the dots are better & neater.

    Congrats, Carolyn, on your shout out. I love having you in our friendly forum and appreciate your helpful words to me and well wishes for both of us.

Steve, my Tuesday lunch with daughter is today & she frequently stays until after dinner, but I forgot to thank you for the name of the RX that would help Jerry with nausea (Zofran/Ondansetron). This time he had no nausea, eating my steak stew & meat loaf like a champ, but I now have the RX just in case for next time. Thanks so much!!

    I had written stew meat on the list, but Jerry got steak instead. It was not fall apart tender but had a wonderful flavor.

    Angela, this is especially appropriate today – “Clockin Spiel”? Ding-ding-ding! as you would (and have) said!

    Where is the slap-myself-on-the-forehead emoji? 🤦🏻‍♂️
    It’s BRITISH! And I had to back into THE CLASH! DUH, couldn’t even hear LONDON CALLING! Should I stay or should I go? I didn’t even know that their original drummer was Terry CHIMES.

    Anyway, I must try some of that coffee. Wrote out the letters, thought ‘Chimed In”, but then saw “clocked in” and backed into CLASH. Anyway,

    🎵”The clock on the wall keeps pushin’ me
    That’s not the way I want my life to be
    If you take any pushin’ from that clock on the wall
    You won’t be happy at all”🎵

    • Steve, Thank you very much for the three bells. Like I told Eric, I made myself laugh out loud this morning. TBT, I know it can be a “spiel”, but when the CLOCKIN’ hit me at 6:15, I knew it was TIME to use it…😂
      As for 🎶Should I stay or should I go…🎶 Choice Hotels started using it in their commercials a while ago, and one of my nephews thought it was such a “cool sound”. I had to laugh. And then I had to “school” him. Same with London Calling. Almost 40 years ago. And The Clash well, not everyone knows them, but “Guess Who”…does? I just want to be sure you get your RECORDnition with all this! Major kudos! You “ROCKed Around the CLOCK” with these today! 🎶🙋🏻

Angela, thank you so much for sharing your plaque message with me that someone gave to you because it is so true, “A strong woman knows she has enough strength for her journey, but a praying woman knows it’s in her journey where she’ll gain her strength.” Your plaque reminds us to pray, and a plaque my daughter hand painted on wood for me offers us a morning prayer.

    Dear Lord, So far today I’ve done pretty well. I haven’t gossiped, lost my temper, or been greedy, grumpy, dishonest, or selfish. For that I’m thankful but in a few minutes I’ll be getting out of bed & from then on I’ll need a lot of help from You. Thank you, Amen.

    Same daughter crocheted The Lord’s Prayer for me, 2 feet by 2 feet, 6 inches. I paid $300 to have it elaborately framed behind glass. The girl at Michael’s who did the work told me she cried after I picked it up because she missed it so much.

    So I did the crossword puzzle and returned to the Jumble, at which time my BRAIN had “clocked in”! 🙄
