CARTOON ANSWER:

THE NEW DISCOUNT RETAILER’S CUSTOMERS HAD GREAT DEALS —

OETTESHINRM = IN STORE (FOR) THEM

Good morning everyone and happy Tuesday!  The first three clue words came instantly today leaving me to struggle a bit with INFORM.  It was jumbled very well so it took a few extra looks before it became visible.  It’s my choice for the most difficult anagram and I’ll be interested in hearing if it would be yours as well.  Moving along to the cartoon, we find ourselves outside the new Sprawl-Mart where a conversation is taking place.  Reading the dialogue, I thought at first that this was a couple that was excited for the new retailer to open but noticing the woman say “I’ll save” indicates that it’s two random people passing by.  As they have their conversation, a construction worker can be seen hanging an “opening soon” sign on the front door of the building as well as a small child in a stroller playing with a toy train.  It was great that Jeff had the little one playing with a toy rather than a cell phone as we too often see today.  The solve wasn’t too tricky as FOR was already given to us.  FOR THEM came to mind and sounded right so that’s where I started.  I noticed IN together in the clue letters so I crossed out those letters as well.  STORE was a quick find to complete the puzzle giving us a really punny punchline.  If you read the comments section of this blog, you probably know “Steve in Oakland”.  The man in the cartoon reminds me of him as he goes for his daily walk to get a Peet’s Coffee.  Have a terrific Tuesday and I’ll see you tomorrow!  πŸ™‚

  1. Good morning, Mike. Steve will be rePEETing this for days! (Maybe weeks)! Great shout out, great post! I thought cell phone at first, too. Very APPealing that it wasn’t! πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • King James says watch your ass, guys!
(Might as well get booted off on the same day I get a shout-out!)πŸ˜‚

        • There once was a man named Steve
An off color word did he heave..
I think it be best…If he curtails the rest
Cause Mike may not grant him reprieve! πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • A shout-out from Mike and a personalized poem from Angela? What next, a sentence from Earl and a Dutch greeting from Eric?
I’d just as soon quit while I’m ahead – it’s not even my birthday or anything! (As every Equifax hacker already knows)

  2. I see the ads, print and TV, I’ve always wanted one near me
How cute the little bouncing ball, Rolls back the prices, one and all…
But til this day we have none still, I sometimes think we never will..
So off I go to New Jersey…’Cause they won’t come to NYC

“Thou shalt not COVET thy neighbors goods…” That’s how I was taught. Commandment # 10. I never coveted…It’s not coveting; I’m just TEMPTed now and then to see what they’re selling…And today, Dave did NOT “sell us a bill of goods…” Instead, he’s given us some top notch words here! SHIFTY may be new…I don’t want to be evasive, I’m really not sure. And INFORM just looks new…Looks new like our cartoons’ STORE! Jeff’s giving us a grand opening…More urban SPRAWL…(Have you noticed a theme recently)? The Big Box STORES! Who amongst us hasn’t been? Where you can go and get the diapers, with a side order of Filet Mignon. Fill a Rx, and grab a case of wine…Get some fishing gear, and take home a rotisserie chicken! The possibilities are endless! Of course these two are excited…Yep, there’s some great deals “IN STORE FOR THEM”! Great pun, Dave! I’ll take a dozen to go! OK, eye candy? Ironically, not that much to choose from…I’m kind of BOXED in. We see the bored construction worker..is that a flashlight on his belt? Vapor from the coffee cup? Nah, it’s not that HOT. And of course there’s the men’s paunches and the blonde woman’s purple top…But today’s theme isn’t USED merchandise, is it? So I’m CHOO CHOOsing the Lego train in the little boys hand. (By the way, is he strapped in)? I think it’s a train…I could be off track…So, there you have it folks! Another great puzzle, and another Grand Opening.
    And I’ll close by saying…BUY, BUY, Everyone…Have a great day! πŸ› πŸ’Έ πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • The characters in the cartoon look like they’re dreaming about deep discounts! Haven’t they heard of Amazon and prime shipping? Lol! Great post, Angela. Thanks. πŸ™‚

    • Well done, as usual Angela. Hope your CART is always full. Have a great day. BTW , Dell had me stressed. Two walks, and a hit batter.

      • Thank you, Moose. And yours also….(But not with all ice cream…) πŸ˜‰
I’ll go to IOW with Sports Shorts…πŸ™‹πŸ»

  3. The young woman pledged not to COVET the designer shoes nor to TEMPT herself on Madison Avenue and to INFORM her financial adviser when she becomes SHIFTY and tries to sneak impulse items past his eagle eye.

Clue words were not a problem but the solution took longer than usual—for some reason I didn’t key in on “store” and struggled to get the pun—great one by the way.

My sentence is aimed at one regular in particular and in deference to her I shall remain silent about the “eye candy” she dangled as bait for me—-I can resist temptation, sometimes. And I did promise to “Let it Be.”

    • LOL…Moi? Bait? Perish the thought!
As for my advisor, I’ve never even discussed the Fashion purchases with him…It’s all in that discretionary fund! πŸ˜‚ (But I notice he does try to discretely glance at my shoes when we meet….And here all along I thought it was a fetish)!!!! πŸ˜‚ .You have mentioned resisting temptation before..I applaud your strength of character! Me? Obviously not so much! πŸ˜‚ I just couldn’t resist…2 men? 2 paunches? AND the blonde…? I’m not wood..!!! Love your sentence, love the shout out, and I’ll try harder from now on…πŸ˜‰ πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • You do just fine the way you are. Wouldn’t want to change a thing. After I wrote my sentence I thought I should use Fifth Avenue as a shopping heaven but seemed to remember that Madison also had its share of great shopping places. Hope you had a great day, always enjoy your posts and the repartee you have with the regulars here.

        • Earl, I know this is you, but your name’s not printing. Yes, Madison Avenue is tres chic! πŸ’ΈπŸ‘ ! You were spot on, as usual.
And thanks for the pass…I’d hate to make a promise I couldn’t keep!! πŸ˜‰πŸ™‹πŸ»
For you: There once was a man named Earl
Who’s traveled all over the world
He’s not one to crow, But this if for sho’
His stories have kept me a twirl…
The day’s going well, thank you. Hope yours is too! πŸ™‹πŸ»

  4. Good morning. The only word for me that was not an instant read was the first “covet”. The cartoon answer itself took about a minute to get once I had all the letters written down. Yesterday’s answer was obtained while waiting for surgery (successfully)I might add on one of my children. Thank God for having faith. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Hi Paul, Good morning. How are all the Catholics missing Covet? πŸ˜‰ All kidding aside, prayers for a speedy recovery. πŸ™πŸ» And best wishes. Be well, and enjoy your day…πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • You had me laughing. Thank you for that. I once told a priest at confession that the older I get the more saintly I am becoming. I really meant it. I much enjoy my thought process now than when I was younger. Much more content than all the hustle I had to do to make ends meet for my family. Two and three jobs kept me going from one to another. That’s nothing compared to your poor wife who is always there taking care of you the house and children without ever complaining. I have profound respect for woman. I had a saint. You got me going ,enough. Again thanks for the laugh

        • Hey, Paul, No thank you needed, I’m happy to have made you laugh. The more Saintly we become with age? Hmm, you really think so? Or is just that we have a lot fewer options? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ You did what you had to do before, and with it came all the responsibility. Now, you can do what you WANT to, not HAVE to. Big difference. A lot less pressure, you can exhale…. And your respect for women is obvious from your words. Sorry if this got you upset, but it’s better to have good memories than bad, don’t you think? Enough is right! Get out there and fling that Bocce ball…and Enjoy! Have a great day! πŸ˜‰πŸ™‹πŸ»β€οΈ

  5. Had no clue on the solution before unjumbling this morning. All of the words were instant solved and the solution came quickly with the letters written down.

    Have a great day!

  6. No problem with the words or cartoon this morning. It’s always nice to have an easy solve. Happy Tuesday everyone.

  7. The shockwave version does not have the word “for” in the answer leaving the answer short 3 letters. Frustrating!

  8. Hi all – INFORM took the longest, and had to write out the letters for the answer – see IOW for details.
Wow, Mike, I am truly honored. Since I’ve given up hope of ever getting a reply or notice from Jeff, I think I’ll just declare that that fulfills one of the last two items on my bucket list (Now when the Sharks win the Stanley Cup… nahhh!)

I am very happy to inform you though, that the only resemblance beween me and that guy is the coffee cup and the Y chromosomes. He’s a little overdressed for my taste, and, thankfully, I don’t have a visible paunch — YET!
