Good morning everyone and happy Friday!!!  Today’s clue word choices were more challenging than yesterday’s lineup.  BOTANY took about a minute to decipher and would be my pick for the most difficult word.  Moving along to the cartoon, we’re out on the baseball field celebrating another win by team Jumble.  Everyone is smiling and one player is being paraded around on the shoulders of his teammates.  We can only assume that he scored the winning run which allowed his team to continue their impressive winning streak.  With two of the words in quotes, I didn’t attempt a guess at the final solution and wrote out the clue letters instead.  I saw WON immediately and wrote it down.  There was another WON so I wrote that down as well which left BY for the finish.  An easy solve overall, but the fact that the cartoon was baseball themed really made up for it.  I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you tomorrow.  🙂

Looking at a WEEKLY calendar, some people WINCE and BALK at the thought of SUMMER ending. BAT let’s SAVE that for another day, and WILCO on to our words: FIRST, I must say that just SEEDing those quotation marks, I POP UP to MAX HEIGHT, and get so excited…I LOSE my comPUNsure! Just thought I’d THROW it out there! Ok, FOLLOWing THROUGH…They’re all past WINners, and Dave BOTCHed up the ORDER of the letters like a PRO. BOT-ANY way we get ’em, we vet ’em…and I wasn’t PUT OUT at all. No SHORT STOPping here, just SWEPT right THREW! Our cartoon: Jeff’s showing us the Jumble Baseball team, LIFTing the MVP after a game ending WALK OFF. The crowd’s having a BALL, going wild in the background. The manager and his assistant are near the DUGOUT discussing the WINNING STREAK. “On a roll”, winning another ONE, winning WON by WON! Clever, David, PITCHED perfectly! The PLAYER in the foreground has that non-cartoon look, BAT I may be way OFF BASE…If he is someone I should recognize, it’s a HIT and a MISS, because I don’t. (But, I’ve been a little off my GAME, though: allergies; I could use some RELIEF). Eye candy: Not much of a PLAYING FIELD, pretty BASic drawing. The only thing causing a DOUBLE take? The paunches on the manager and his man? No OFFENSE, Jeff, but if you just CHANGE UP those LINEs UP a little differently? …I FIELD it’d give them a much BATTER APPEARANCE. SERIESously….
    Ok, I’m getting CALLED UP. And, it’s time to CLEANUP, while I’m still AHEAD in the COUNT. So, Baseball: America’s pastime. It just CLUTCHes at my heartSTRINGS! I know whenever I’m diSCOREaged, or dEJECTED, or LOW and on the OUTSIDE of things, CATCHING a game gets me back in LINE. DRIVES the troubles away. I just GLOVE it, especially when we get the WIN!

  3. Good morning. I tried what you guys said about bringing up the blog when it’s not there and as you can see it worked. At first glance only one word popped out at me so i put it aside and had my first cup of coffee. When I picked it back up they all came to me pretty quickly. Even the cartoon answer was no challenge. This lived up to a Friday Jumble Until tomorrow stay well. Prayers out to all those in path of this next hurricane.

      • The first word that I got instantly was botch. After coming back to the puzzle All the other words came in less than fifteen seconds each starting with 2,3 then 4.

      • Thank you for the complement but I don’t think I deserve it. There are days I spend hours on one and never solve it. This week so far I have been lucky. I like to think the jumble words are down played to boost our ego. It’s working for me!!! My head is held a little higher. Haha.

  4. During the WEEKLY BOTANY exam, Julian experienced a painful BOTCH on his right arm and his noticeable WINCE made the invigilator suspicious.
    No problem with the words or solution again today–soon a stumper will appear I suspect.
    Cartoon: I’ve found a website that shows the cartoon in color and allows me to enlarge it!!! I’m in Jumble Heaven.
    My only comment about the cartoon is an issue I’ve raised before—please don’t give so many youngish men a paunch. I guess I called them “young men” from this older man’s perspective. Have a great weekend everyone and if you are in Irma’s path–godspeed.
    Angela–I wrote my post before reading yours. So I didn’t steal the paunch idea or the godspeed . Maybe we have been meeting each morning for too long???

      The paunch subject you and I have spoken about in the past. Godspeed, now that’s an eye opener. And we used it with two different meanings. It just goes to show that we have everyone’s best interest at heart. ❤️ Love your sentence. Hoping you have a good day. 🙋🏻

      • Thanks, Earl. I found it and it’s similar to what the other newspapers use. I’ll stick with my website for the enlargement though because it was still distorted for the fine detail. You can’t beat the color though! It really makes the Jumble pop.

    • Mike, I always give you a vote, sometimes multiple times (I *did* live in Chicago, after all 😉), but A) I think it detects and ignores multiple votes, and B) It requires you to log into WordPress to “like” it.

      • Ok, Steve. I didn’t realize it meant that you had to create a login. We got 6 votes today, which is 4 more than we usually get. Big homer for Panda, huh?! FINALLY!

        • Hi Mike – Loved Dan Shaughnessy’s quote that the reason Panda said he wasn’t comfortable in Boston was because he couldn’t *fit* in the jersey they gave him!

            • Mike, the sad part about the Sandoval story is that the Giants are in such bad shape they can actually use him. But as I mentioned, he said all the right things and seems to have been forgiven, so we both bettah off, especially since you’re paying his salary. And World Series championships generate a lot of goodwill: See: “Bumgarner/Dirtbike”, which Scott Ostler called “the only blip on a clean record, but goodness, what a blip! It’s the Goodyear blip of blips.”

  7. My wife, the ESL student, had to solve BOTANY for me! The rest of the puzzle was easy, though. I, too, appreciated the baseball theme, though it looks like baseball will end in the NW in September yet another year! Our team seems destined to play .500 ball.

    • BOTANY was a great word, John! Did you get your page-a-day calendar? Mine arrived very quickly. It’s sad to see the Mariners pretty much out of it. They are usually my favorite team to watch when the Red Sox aren’t playing. 🙂

      • I have NOT received my calendar yet, and had meant to ask you whether you had gotten yours. I’ll need to follow up on that now.

  10. Hi all – Once I got BAYONET out of my brain (Ouch!), BOTANY and the rest appeared.
    Now how did they know that the Cleveland Indians would win 15 in a row, threatening the A’s record of 20? (Who are they playing? — Go Orioles, or Tigers if it comes to that).

    September and October are our warmest months here; we won’t get that real fall-feeling weather until November. Despite that, Angela, back atcha with the leaves:

        • 🎶Autumn Leaves🎶 Is a beautiful song. I’m not crazy about Roger Wiliiams version, sorry. I have an old Nat King Cole that’s haunting. For me? Sinatra’s (BMH) 🎶Autumn in New York 🎶 Ella Fitzgerald does a beautiful rendition too. I can’t wait for Fall….🍂

          • Re: “Can’t wait for Fall” – Isn’t Autumn in the East beautiful sometimes? The first time I visited my brother in DC it was mid-summer with awful heat and humidity even at night (and the tap water smelled like a chlorine swimming pool). The next time, probably about 8 years later, it was early October and just perfect (visited the Archives, Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, etc.)

            • Did the water still smell?! J/k. I always leaf peep in the fall. There’s this one tree up the road that is always the first to turn and I can see it from our dining room table. Truly a beautiful season! Oh and cider donuts too! 😁😁😁

                Driving back to school in fall in South Kingston RI through the forests – like a natural ‘trip’! Every color imaginable.

              • Local farm cider donuts. There’s this one place close that has the BEST ones and the lines are usually all the way down the road! I don’t usually eat donuts, but in the fall how can you resist.

              • How timely is it that you were just talking about retiring to Florida? Don’t do it! Although my mother told me about the Long Island and RI 1938 hurricane when she was 14 (which has a great documentary on PBS), and I lived through Hurricane Carol in 1954 in Providence which sank boats at Rocky Point Amusement Park.

              • The funny thing is that I was looking up New England hurricanes and I looked at the 1938 hurricane which hit RI really hard. Bob was the worst that I remember and that was enough for me!

              • Nope. Either they didn’t have them in RI, or not until after I left in 1969. Just to follow up –

                Never heard of cider donuts – hope they’re haaaad cider!

                That PBS documentary on the 1938 hurricane has some of the most authentic RI accents you’d ever want (or not want) to hear. An old fisherman tells of checking his boats “and the lines were pahtin’ – that means they were breaking”. That storm and Hurricane Carol spurred the building of the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier across Narragansett Bay, which I remember.

                And about sign-stealing, our wise columnist Bruce Jenkins says that you have to draw the line at electronic devices, or they’ll be banks of guys with headphones trying to hack the other guys’ systems.

              • Ok on the 🍕, just curious. I’ll have to find a link for the 1938 hurricane footage (prob YouTube). I really want to learn more about it. As for the sign “stealing”, I’m already over it. Finishing the LAD/COL game and bedding down. Good night buddy! 😊

              • Mike – Our conversation reminded me that there were high-water markers in Providence on many of the buildings, so I Googled “providence high water plaques” and saw some really great pictures and stories.

  11. Hi, all! All 4 words came quickly as did the answer. Loved the baseball themed cartoon.

    Mike, I have chosen 5 stars and clicked “like” under your post many times, but it has always sent me to a screen that asks for my nonexistent password. Today it finally gave me another screen that says if I would like a new password, to fill in everything and WAIT to be reunited to my WordPress account. That scares me. I don’t know how long it will take to get my account back.
