Good Wednesday morning everyone!  Today is a tale about two different medias as they relate to the Daily Jumble with each form having its own unique advantages and disadvantages.  Opening the newspaper this morning, the first thing that came to mind was how simplistic the cartoon appeared to be.  The print version allowed me to get the clue words finished, solving all of the words relatively quickly except for a slight pause on INSIST.  As soon as I noticed the newspaper on the father’s lap, I ditched my paper and went digital to finish off the puzzle as well as go on to discover that the cartoon was much more complex than I first perceived it to be.  

The final solution to the puzzle was a piece of cake and came instantly after reading the dialogue and sentence.  The really fun part was zooming in on the aforementioned newspaper where there was writing on it that took a few minutes to figure out.  NO MORE PEARLS was clearly visible, as well as what I thought was the word WINE.  Thinking about it for a minute, I remembered the comic strip Pearls Before Swine (written and illustrated by Stephan Pastis), and the cartoon was actually the same father telling his son NO MORE PEARLS BEFORE SWINE comics.  Excellent job, Mr. Knurek!  There’s no way that I would have been able to see that in my newspaper, so using two different medias to solve today’s “puzzle within a puzzle” was a Jumble aficionados dream.  Have a wonderful Wednesday, and I’ll see you tomorrow!  🙂

  2. Good morning. Fun puzzle today. On a bus to Atlantic City with eight people from bocce for some fun. Even going to play bingo on board. Had trouble with rodent. The cartoon was an instant read. Now knowing the letters I was able to get the last word. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • It seems as though RODENT is the stumper for today! Have a great trip to Atlantic City, Paul. Don’t get into too much trouble with your bocce bros! Good luck and have a safe trip! 🙂👍🏻

      • Thank you Angela. On the way back home. Had a good time,a great lunch and only out $300 including the 30 comp we get. Tried the dice,roulette and slot machine.

  3. When the freshman took his pet beaver to class, his professor had to INSIST that he take the animal home and agree to the HONOR code but when his doctor certified that the RODENT was a service animal the university had to GRANT an exception to their rules.
    No problems with clue words or solution but I did not receive an e-mail with the Jumble Answers today. This happens from time to time and I have found a way to circumvent the glitch.
    Appreciate the details you provide about the cartoon that I cannot see in the digital version I use. I’ll try some other sites later.
    I was tempted to use capybara in my sentence but realised it was not a North American rodent, so I settled on the largest one on our share of America.

    • Just realised I did not include INSIST in my sentence! Can I change it to read“`his professor had to INSIST that he take the animal home”~~And it’s not even Monday…..

I found a cartoon that showed more detail and was very impressed that someone caught “little Jeffy” from Family Circus. Once pointed out, so obvious. As someone once said–it takes a village, or in this case a group of bloggers to raise the blinds.

  4. 🎶”Nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’, you gotta have somethin’ if you want to be with me, Nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’, you gotta have somethin’ if you want to be with me…”🎶. RATS!…Not for NOTHING, but RODENT shouldn’t have caused the pause that it did. GRANTed, it didn’t last long, but I blinked more than once. The other words: NOTHING TO IT! The answer phrase immediately came to mind. Today’s cartoon: Jeff’s giving us another of his “Toon in Attune” frames. (I’m coining the phrase..Attune, AtTOON, I’m working on it)! The cartoon Dads’ paper shows today’s Jumble, the Family Circus and Ziggy. Even though the Jumble “Attune” has today’s pic, the wording gave me pause…Another pause! Looking real closely, I made out No More Pearls. Before Swine? My paper, the NY Daily News, features a comic, “Pearls Before Swine”. Could this be Jeff giving them a shout out? Maybe. If so, cute touch! The son is asking about adding zeroes. (Cute little boy, looking nice, not NAUGHTy)! MATHer’s in the background, there’s a sleeping dog. NOT much to work with. Is there a joke in here, with only 4 fingers to COUNT on? Can I make something out of NOTHING? Should I try making MATH puns? No, that’s the FIRST SINE of madness, and I’m already having a PROBLEM with this. Ok, let’s look for eye candy…My friend is INSISTing the man in the puzzle is Jeff. I think NOT, because the glasses are different, and his wife’s hairdo is all wrong; anyway, I really don’t need him ADDing his TWO cents in, at FIVE o’clock in the morning…( I said I wouldn’t make Math PUNS…These are Math words…Cut me some slack, I’m trying…)! So, no eye candy? ZERO Candy? ( Phew! …Thank you Hershey’s)! …
    Ok, that’s it. If I’m to preserve any of my Puzzle HONOR, I need to admit deFEET..( FEET? TWELVE inches? NO?..Tough crowd…) I need to admit defeat, and bring this to an end. 🎶” I should have known better…”🎶 You win SUM, you lose SUM…I lost this ONE. RATS!…Those weapons of MATH destruction…

  5. Yup, rodent for me, too. I had to back in. I started looking at Pearls Before Swine in my paper after Steve mentioned it. Thanks, again, Mike for revealing the details that add so much.

    • You’re most welcome, Caroline! I know my write up was a bit jumbled, but I think the idea came across pretty clear. I allow myself 20 minutes to put it all together so if it works, it’s great.     • Thanks, Angela. I do apologize for WordPress not sending out the emails. It is very troubling to hear so many people experiencing the same difficulty. There really is no way to fix it other than transcribing each subscibers (~900) email addresses into a database and sending out a personal email. Hopefully they’ll iron out the kinks in a future update. 🤞🏻

      • I’m getting used to it. And believe me, while you were away, I read through their “Help” section like crazy. I think it has something to do with deleting the emails. No big deal,,,It should be the biggest problem in my life! 😂 🙋🏻

  7. It’s too funny that you can recognize the Family Circus in the paper but not in the puzzle. The cute little boy is Jeffy. He’s asking Daddy (Bil) Keane for some help while Barfy naps and Mommy is in the kitchen. There you go,

    • Marlene, I asked your same question some time ago and was told that using the letters for a clue word because of knowing the cartoon answer is not cheating. That is what we call “backing in” to the clue word. Today I had the cartoon answer and used the letters to “back in” to solve RODENT, and I’m not the only one. Go back a few comments and you will read that Carolyn did the same thing earlier.

    • As several others have already pointed out, it’s definitely not cheating! It’s just like solving other words in a crossword to find letters that you are missing for those few stubborn words. It’s always a pleasure to hear from you, Marlene. Take care and chime in again real soon, ok? 😊

    And Stephen Pastis of ‘Pearls’ always says “Who needs algebra?”, the characteristic cry of the math-phobic. (We wouldn’t have “zero” to kick around anymore without it, for ONE thing, he said, climbing down off Leila’s soapbox — Gee, the view is great from up there!).

    “Zero” is about the length of time it took to solve the puzzle, but nobody’s going to get a swelled head after missing the Family Circus reference.

  12. Hi, all! After saying the cartoon answer immediately, the first thing that popped into my head, Mike, was you helping your son with math but didn’t keep that thought because my feeble memory says that your dog is a dachshund. Could be/ might be/ probably am wrong on that.
    I didn’t recognize Family Circus without the circle around it suggested by Steve.
    Couldn’t get RODENT but finally smelled a rat while backing in as did Carolyn and Marlene.

    • You’re correct with the dog breed, Lelia! My two old hounds are getting up there in age (14 years next month for my boy and 13 for my girl). Do you have any pets? I don’t recall you ever mentioning any.

      The circle might have been too obvious for Jeff’s cartoon. I’m just surprised that it slipped by all of us. And I read it every morning!!! 🙂
