CARTOON ANSWER: THE BOWLERS WHO STARTED PLACING BETS WERE- – –

IGLORHHESRL – HIGH ROLLERS

Good morning, Everyone! 🎳 BOWLING FOR DOLLARS 🎳

🎢”Keep the ball rollin’, Keep the ball rollin’. Girl, the name of the game is love. On your mark, get set, let the kissin’ start, and just keep the ball rollin’ baby….right into my heart.”🎢

BOWLING! Good exercise, good fun…But, Goodness, gracious, GLORY be, get a GRIP, guys! GAMBLING galore! Ok, BABY, SPLIT to our words…Despite being RETURN favorites, HYPHEN caused this BROOKLYN girl to bang my head against the BED POST. DOUBLE blink…Lying here on the CLEAN SHEETS, my cup FILLed with coffee, I was ready to LEAVE it alone and RETURN to it later…But I’m not one to BACKUP, so I did a DOUBLE take..Ah, Hyphen! Ok. Good scrambling, Dave! So, getting past that, I APPROACHed our cartoon. I’m not big on BOWLING, it’s really not up my ALLEY. My nails, those shoes…I guess you’d call me a MISS AVERAGE…(Those shoes)! But, you GUTTER do what you GUTTER do, so let’s ADDRESS this. Jeff’s FRAME is giving us four BOWLERS, at the Alpine Lanes. As one is taking his SHOT, his teammates behind him are on a ROLL! $100. on a single STRIKE? Are you kidding me? This is how you get HOOKed! These TURKEYs keep this up, they’ll be WASHed OUT financially before the game’s over! Guys, calm down, put that money back in your POCKETS! High stakes here..with these ROLLERS…These…”HIGH ROLLERS”! Good job, Jumble Guys..You’re still the KINGPINS around here! Ok, eye candy: It has to be the sole woman, sitting to the SIDE of the LANE. Someone’s MOTHER-IN-LAW, perhaps? Whoever she is, she’s stunned. ANCHOR you blame her? She’s just BOWLed over!
Well, that’s it for today. Great puzzle, left me time to SPARE. Maybe I’ll have that second cup of coffee, or maybe some fruit. A SOUR APPLE, perhaps.
Ok, so, let’s not be DEADWOOD today. LEAVE your comfort zone, and do something new! We shouldn’t have to expLANE anything…Life is short… SPLIT happens! Get out there and STRIKE IT RICH! Β πŸŽ³Β πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • Good morning, Moose. Yep, Hyphen. We’ve had it before, but the scrambling this time was tricky. Dave’s raising the STAKES. Setting that bar a little HIGHER! Beautiful weather in NY, right? Hope you enjoy it! 🎳 πŸ™‹πŸ»

  1. The Earl’s surname had a HYPHEN but his uncouth SPRAWL at the exclusive club added little to his aristocratic IMAGE and no GLORY to his distinguished ancestors.
“Hyphen” also caused me some anguish this morning and I was forced to write out the clue letters to solve a clever puzzle. I kept looking at the lane, thinking those small spot marks were some kind of hint.
So bowling shoes and broken nails don’t appeal to you Angela? In the OLD days it was the haze of cigarette smoke, stale beer and stinky feet that I remember most.
Fruit? I’ve been binging on Bing cherries, fresh locally grown blueberries and cantaloupe and missing my mothers home made peach pie.🌻 πŸ‰ 🍊 😍

    • Good morning, Earl, Prince of profound, poetic, profuse…pull them out of where…? sentences! Never a disappointment! The shoes, Earl? Listen, I like playing footsie as much as the next girl, but strictly one on one! That mass mingling? SPARE me! Uh uh! I bowl maybe 10-15 times a year, but I bought my own shoes. We had fruit for breakfast! Copious, colorful, cool as can be! (There’s an abundance of figs coming off the tree also, so that added to the mix). Smile 😘 for your Mom’s peach pie…
Have a great day, we have beautiful weather! πŸŽ³πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • Ah, Earl, the bowling alley was also where I began a life-long love of pinball which persists to this very day, followed later by arcade games. 5Β’ per electo-mechanical machine when I started.

  2. Hyphen was my holdup as well, but not for long. Then somehow, “rollers” jumped out at me with “high” coming a few seconds later.

That said, I have a feeling we are in for a real stickler any day now…

  3. Hi all –
Nice catch on TURKEY there, Angela! Three strikes in a row, I believe?

I only realized the significance of the name “Alpine Lanes” and the view of the mountains after getting HIGH Rollers. and realized that that’s why they were betting a lot more than their SPARE change!
And I love the STRIKING perspective of the drawing, from the point of view of the pinsetter. Only a couple of times in my life have I bowled at an alley with actual human pinsetters, and that was at an amusement park. My father knew that you were supposed to tip the man at the end of your session by sliding change down the alley to him.
Since it’s on topic, I will proceed to bore you with some bowling history.
We didn’t have tenpin bowling until quite late. I was in a Saturday morning league, and all our alleys were duckpin – 3 balls per frame, smaller pins, smaller balls without finger holes. And also on Saturday morning TV, there was Candlepin bowling from the Boyleston Bowladrome in Boston – almost cylindrical pins, 3 very small light balls per frame, deadwood (fallen pins) left right where they lay as part of the action until the end of frame. And only once, at a small summer fair, did I ever get to try the very rare and weird “rubber-band” duckpins, where each pin is fitted with a thick rubber “doughnut”. Thus concludes today’s very interesting lesson zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
(Didn’t we have Rip Van Winkle and the nine-pins here, or was that just the Ichabod Crane puzzle?)

    • ..and nice catch on the BROOKLYN also! The left-hand side of the pin triangle, opposite from where one normally aims?

      • You did your research, Grasshopper! πŸ˜‰ Now look up Jersey! πŸŽ³πŸ™‹πŸ»

        • Hey Moose, Steve here – Yup, I only learned Jersey Side today.
And you guys upstate should know, being the home of Rip Van Winkle and his 9-pins! πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

        • Yea, but tell the truth, Moose..From now on…? What are the odds Brooklyn’ll be popping into your head??…πŸ˜‰πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • … never heard SOUR APPLE or BED POST either. Man, you were really on a roll! Hats off, I’m in awe to someone who doesn’t even like bowling that much! πŸ‘

    • Alpine Lanes! Good catch! There’s a lot to digest here…and I’m finishing lunch…, so well, you understand! I’ll be back, tho. Just let me finish the Turkey….πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • Ok, so it wasn’t turkey, it was stuffed peppers and zucchini flowers. And the Yankee game! Have you ever eaten zucchini flowers? Sorry, let’s leave that for IOW. A lot of good info here, albeit days gone by. I didn’t know anything about Candlepin bowling, and then I just read it was primarily played in Boston. The tip thing I’ve heard about. Nice memory of your Father, huh? 😘
Ichabod Crane was the Headless Horsemen Jumble. I’m a little vague on Rip Van Winkle…(could be that residual damage from last night)! πŸ˜‚ But, Grasshopper, Your mission should you choose to accept it….πŸŽ³πŸ™‹πŸ»

  4. HI, all! Had the cartoon answer immediately. I liked it that the bowler was shaped like a bowling ball while the HIGH ROLLERS were more svelte. Great details in the cartoon, as usual. Three words easy, had to back into HYPHEN.
Earl, your sentence was a masterpiece of elegance and humor.
Angela, your post bowled me over. Great job.

    • LOL..Thank you very much, Lelia. It was a fun puzzle for sure! Hope you’re doing well. Have a great day! πŸŽ³πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • Angela, I just found your broken heart emoji and it made me cry. I am picturing a second one beside yours for me.

        • Yea. My brothers tell me it’s time to stop crying…I tell my brothers they’ll never know…Sorry if I made you cry. Be well. πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • Angela, you did not make me cry. I allowed myself to cry while thinking about our precious moms. It’s cathartic. I used to dab my eyes & say, β€œAllergies!” but no more. I let those tears flow & feel thankful that I am a sensitive & sympathetic woman. Jerry, a guy, does not tear up a lot, but he always weeps at the end of Saving Private Ryan.

        • Yes, it is cathartic. That’s my story too, and I’m sticking with it! And, can’t blame Jerry. I think anyone, man or woman, who DOESN’T cry at the end of Private Ryan is definitely made of WOOD! Well wishes to you both. πŸ™‹πŸ»

  5. Steve, add one more item to your list of similarities between you & Jerry: love of pinball. Now that the grandchildren have outgrown their HUGE playroom in our basement, I am on the lookout for a pinball machine for Jerry. I hope to find a big, strong one; a replica of the ones we used to play.

    • Unbelievable! I own seven, none for sale.
Hey Lelia – If your head was swollen yesterday to the size of a one-man balloon, how about now, after getting a personal reply from Jumble Jeff! I’m totally jealous!

By the way there’s a great Monty Python skit where people are riding in Ferdinand von Zeppelin’s new creation, and everytime one of them complements him on his “balloon”, he becomes enraged and starts raving “IT’S NOT A BALLOON!! IT’S AN AIRSHIP, AN AIRSHIP!!” Then the next person comes up and says “Nice balloon….”
      http://www.montypython.net/scripts/balloon.php

      • Hi, Steve! Thanks for mentioning it so I can tell you that I was blown away. I spent about an hour writing & rewriting my reply. The first one had innumerable exclamation points after my thanks. Not really, but I pictured about a thousand.
Where should I look for Jerry’s pinball machine?
I read your Monty Python’s AIRSHIP skit & the next one about buying an ant. Both were very funny. Thanks. Is he the same one who did John’s Not Here or something like that? I can’t find that one anymore. Guy knocking on door, cops coming.
You say you like MY stories yet YOU wrote a major motion picture idea with title, details, & actress choices faster than I wrote a short thank-you. No up-front money is good advice, which I also learned from my AARP magazine. LOL Carnegie Hall! Wow, impressive! Impressive like you, generous man.

        • Hi Lelia –
          1) That skit is “Dave’s not Here” by Cheech and Chong.
          2) Shhhh. Confession – I can’t type that fast – I had the post written and used copy and paste.
          3) Let me look into pinball machine vendors. Mine were collected between around 1980 through 1997, so my experience is not recent.

        • Lelia, just FYI, “Monty Python” is not one man, it’s the short form of the name that the group of five English comics and one American animator chose for themselves and their BBC show “Monty Python’s Flying Circus.”
          From Wikipedia:
“Several names for the show were considered before Monty Python’s Flying Circus was settled upon. Some were Owl Stretching Time, The Toad Elevating Moment, A Horse, a Spoon and a Bucket, Vaseline Review, and Bun, Wackett, Buzzard, Stubble and Boot. Flying Circus stuck when the BBC explained it had printed that name in its schedules and was not prepared to amend it. Many variations on the name in front of this title then came and went (popular legend holds that the BBC considered Monty Python’s Flying Circus to be a ridiculous name, at which point the group threatened to change their name every week until the BBC relented)”
          πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

    • So Lelia, I was thinking (uh-oh!). I liked your story yesterday so much, I think we could turn it into a Major Motion Picture. Can’t you just see it? – “The Barefoot Pianist – the Lelia Ohlund Story.” The tale of an Arkansas child’s Quest for a pair of shoes in which to play piano at Carnegie Hall. And the best part – with today’s technology, you can pick any actress, past or present, to play your role. Who will it be? Greta Garbo? Marlene Dietrich? Myrna Loy? Katherine Hepburn? Lady Gaga?

Have your people contact my people – we’ll talk.

Just one thing though – if a guy from New York tells you he wants to do the movie but needs you to write him a big check, tell him “Fuggedaboutit – I already got a Producer!”

  6. Good afternoon. Chomping at the bit to post but it never came up to 12:00. when I finally went out. Glory days. I had an image of failing just looking st the scrambled letters. To my surprise there were no cartoon answers hyphenated. That would give me trouble. I was stuck on the last word for the longest time but, hearing a noise in my backyard I went to take a look. I saw my neighbors cat sprawled out on my back porch which gave me the word. In doing the cartoon answer I had roll for the first word. When I rearranged the letters “High” jumped out and the remaining letters left “Rollers”. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Paul, I agree with Angela that your sprawled cat was a riot. I also enjoyed finding all 4 clue-words in your post. Good job.

  7. Paul, I’m laughing out loud at the sprawled cat…I think you’re pulling our legs here! I did answer you this morning, I suggested you look at the calendar at the top left of each day’s page. You can then just tap on the day in question. As for the emails not coming, it’s happening to me also. This morning I got yesterday’s, and I’m the one posting them. Mike and I are trying to figure it out. Glad you found your way back…Now about that cat…????πŸ˜‚πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • Angela, my apologies that my reply to Paul was placed before yours rather than in order of time posted. Sorry.

      • Lelia…Don’t be silly! (I think that’s another one of those old time expressions, huh)? No apology necessary. It’s one more of the Word Press quirks we’re trying to decipher.
Speaking of posts not in order, and emails not showing up, late on the night of the 19th, or the wee small hours of the 20th, I left a post for you. An attempt at alliteration…I also threw in a paraphrase of a line from a movie, for Steve…I don’t think either of you saw it. πŸ™‹πŸ»

  8. EVERYONE: I’m sure you all may be wondering where Mike is. He decided last minute to take a mini vacation…a last hurrah so to speak, before school starts next week. He hasn’t abandoned us, (nor are you stuck with me..)! He’ll be back in a few days…bright eyed and bushy-tailed as always!
And I’m thinking, by no one asking, it’s a testament to the kindness of you all. I mean, if I had read..”Uh, where is Mike anyway..” I could have taken it the wrong way!!!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ β€οΈπŸ™‹πŸ»

    • Angela, you are so right that I did not see that post and I am having two thoughts simultaneously: need to thank Angela for all those alliterations just for me and look at those last two words!! It’s cathartic! How fun is that! You said it after doing something fun (alliterating), and I said it after releasing some tears for our moms. The race is on to see who can use it next. LOL!
Thank you so much for the info about Mike. Now I’m happy they are out having fun together and not sick in bed.

      • You’re very welcome. That’s what reminded me of it. The word cathartic.
Yes, Mike is foot loose, fancy free, frolicking, and having fun with the family! LOL…Enjoy your evening! πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • Lelia and Angela (my two original friends here):
The alliteration post is near the bottom of Jumble Answers for 8/19. And I did read and catch the allusion to “Apocalypse Now.” πŸ˜‰πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

        • Yes,Steve, Lelia found it. And for the strangest reason, that phrase is always is my head…not that I ever smelled napalm, thank God. I just relate it to other things…You know, like bacon…πŸ˜‚ Good work, Grasshopper. πŸ™‹πŸ»
