Jumble Answer for 08/05/2017

VOLNE – NOVEL

EOGGU – GOUGE

WHOGTR – GROWTH

RIDHOA – HAIRDO

CARTOON ANSWER:  SHE WANTED TO GET A NEW, MORE MODERN SCALE. THEY’D HAD THEIRS – – –

NOLOGEGWTHIO – – – “WEIGH” TOO LONG

Good morning, Everyone!   WEIGHTFOR IT..!

🎶”Boy, you gotta carry that WEIGHT, Carry that WEIGHT a long time, Boy, you gonna carry that WEIGHT, Carry that WEIGHT a long time…”🎶

Say on a SCALE of 1 to 10, 10 being: “Yes, I’m good with this” to 1 being: “I’d like to GOUGE my eyes out”, how do most of us feel looking at our SCALES? Tough one, right? To some, the scale is our friend..to others..With friends like this, who needs enemies? It does have its UPS and DOWNS…Today’s subject: The SCALE. Let’s WEIGH in…NoTHINg new with our words today, we’ve seen them time and aGAIN. But HAIRDO? Haven’t we COMB by that recently? And I thought GROWTH kind of fit the theme…I laughed it OFF! All in all, easy enough. Our cartoon: A MIDDLE aged couple, discussing their SCALE. SPARSEly drawn, not much to GO ON, really. Dialogue: “Had it for 20 years”..Long time. “Put a lot of POUNDS on”. They want a new one. Something Digital? Or maybe they’re LEANing towards one of those new NOVELty ones, that talk to you…? “Oh, I love you just the WEIGH you are”! Or..”WEIGHT a minute, WEIGHT a minute..!” You’ve seen them aROUND. AnyWEIGH, put it together…the question states that they’ve had it…”WEIGHToo Long! Cute, and clever Guys, but SLIM chance of us not guessing this one…you gave us WEIGH too many hints! Eye candy? TOWEL I come up with something, when there’s really not much to WHET my APPETITE here? I guess it’ll have to be the TOWELS, though. Two reasons. One, I’ve never seen a head one tied quite that WEIGH before and two, I’d never WEIGH myself with my hair WET..and those TOWELS on!…Let’s be honest, Folks, they’re bathroom SCALES, not the SCALES of Justice! THINk about it!
🎶”Saturday, Saturday…”🎶 So worth the WEIGHT! Have a great day! ⚖ 🙋🏻

        • Good morning, Moose. 4:30-5, major thunder storm. I love watching it…even tho it scares me! Just some drizzle now. Thank God it’s cooler. I like rainy days. Had to be in Brooklyn by 7, met my cousins, we had a Mass for my Grandparents. Lit a candle for Judge. 🙏🏻 Lord, hear my prayer….🙋🏻

  1. With a longer GROWTH, she tried s NOVEL HAIRDO but the stylist GOUGEd her on the price,
Again compound word (hairdo) slowed me down. Otherwise an easy solve. Beautiful sunny cool day up here– almost like fall.
    Have a great weekend everyone🌞😄

    • Good morning, Earl. Good one! And you got that right! They always try to gouge us with the long hair…Please..I say it gives them more to ‘create’ with…! No sun here yet, but thankfully we dropped 20°. Great weekend? Won’t we see you t’row? 🙋🏻

  2. Good morning. Think maybe all that sun every day at the bocce court is starting to fry my brain lately. I believe two days straight I stumbled on the cartoon answer. But hallelujah, today by George I do believe I got it. Hairdo was the last word I got. Took as long as the other three words combined. Getting a hang of the pun words. My mind usually shuts down when I see those quotation marks. But today’s was just a ten second lapse. Until tomorrow stay well. Angela , your intro everyday is inspiring. You leave us thinking what is she gonna say next.

    • Good morning, Paul. I wondered where you were the past few days. I know after a few hours, the sun knocks me out! But bocce is great; think of it, you’re not only having fun, you’re getting all that cardio in! 3 out of 4 today so far stuck on Hairdo. That might be today’s “Gotcha” word. The punctuation marks? You’ll get to love them! My heart skips a beat, because I know it’ll be something clever. Thank you so much for the compliment. Inspiring wasn’t something I always heard growing up…I can still see my poor Mother, shaking her head and saying time and time again..”God only knows what this kid’s going to say next”!! HA! 😉 Enjoy your day! Regards to George! 😂 Until tomorrow….🙋🏻

  3. I needed the answer before I could figure out hairdo. My tall scale with weights is much older – can’t even remember when I bought it. I don’t think I’ll need to replace it.

    • Good morning,🎶Sweet Caroline🎶 .Funny, because glancing at the puzzle today, HAIRDO was the first word that caught my eye. But I have an advantage..or maybe it’s a disadvantage! Just this morning, I needed both “Noodle Head” Curling Creme and “Bada Bing” Holding Gel to try and beat my hair into submission! Especially that it was raining. Just a few of the many “can’t miss” hair products I “tangle” with on a daily basis. The humidity is my bane! Bane for the mane! So HAIR’s a word I see a lot! LOL.Your scale? “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it..” The quality of products today is nothing like it used to be, right? Yours sounds like a keeper. Hope you have a great day! See you t’row! 🙋🏻

      • HI Angela – Never heard of those hair products. I don’t use much of anything and I guess it shows. Yeah, I do like old stuff, even my computer of 15 years that struggles along.

        • Hi Caroline. You wouldn’t believe what’s out there! And I’m not the gullible type that’ll buy just anything. (I hated buying the Bada Bing product, I felt it was kind of a slur, but it does work). I do my research first. I actually have them sorted by season! I’m the only person I know that checks the humidity on line as soon as I get up! Let’s me know how much time I’ll need to tame the beast! LOL..The Winter months are so much kinder to my hair! I don’t have much of a choice. If I just “wash and wear” my hair, it’ll take on a life of its own! LOL…Thankfully most reputable places will let you return a product if it doesn’t live up to your expectations. “HAIR but for the Grace of God, go I”! LOL… I too cherish everything old. And I’m not big on change either, I resist it as much as I can. New doesn’t always mean better, right? Looking forward to my Kakuro trow! Be well! 😉🙋🏻

    • Hi Clay, Steve here. “Pun-y” vs “Puny”, very clever! (I do like the boldface type, although we might have expected Angela to try “Italic” first!)

      • ITALIC first? Hmm..Read my reply to Caroline RE: Bada Bing…I can very quickly stop cherishing you….🙋🏻

  4. Hey Clay, Thought I’d give it a try. I like BOLD! Is it better without it? 🙋🏻

  5. Hi all – I’ve seen HAIRDO many times, and it *still* tripped me up today! I knew it was familiar, but it took a minute.
You cherish everything old? — Awww, thanks, Angela! 😉
As for your modern talking scales, I still like Garfield’s – the one that says “One at a time, please!”

    • Good morning! ROTFL! Busted! Yes, you’re welcome, I WAS thinking of you when I wrote that! 😂 🎶”Cherish is the word I use to describe…All the feeling that I have hiding here for you inside…”🎶. How’d you miss that one?
Hairdo? Familiar…? Wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole! 😂😂 Poor Garfield! Should have stuck with his old one. Maybe Orange ISN’T the new black! 🙋🏻

      • My word ASSOCIATIONs must be off today after spraining my brain on the Asimov quiz, but I don’t want to get too long WINDY-ed here — see IOW.

  6. Knew answer at first glance and first three words jumped out at me. I take pride in keeping my hair nice and would you believe “hairdo” tried to.evade. me? I am not vain, however, few years ago the BIG C took all my hair and I am grateful that it finally grew back. Someday I may write what I call “Sue’s Saga.” 😢🌞 Have a wonderful weekend! !🌞

    • Hi Sue. Sorry to hear of your past battle. Please know that nothing I said was meant to be insensitive. I hope you didn’t take it that way. I’m glad you’re doing well now. And you should write your story. I’d be happy to read it. Be well. Wonderful weekend to you also! 😀

      • Angela. nothing said to offend; fun is good for the soul. Truthfully, I seldom read long posts unless directed or replied to me. Not into puns and ,at best, I scan long posts. As stated, I do try to catch replies to me and reply back. From what I read, I think you have natural curly hair and I would be envious, however, learned the hard way to be thankful for what I have.🌞

        • Sue, I’m very grateful for your reply. I would be devastated if I thought something I said caused hurt to someone. Fun is very good for the soul, but maybe I joke too much at times. My comments were genuine in response to Caroline’s, I meant no harm. Yes, I do have curly hair, and it’s big like my mouth! And it does give me grief, but I guess I take for granted the fact that I have it. I envy you your strength to overcome all that you have. Ok, no more. For all my bravado, I’m a wuss at heart, and I don’t want to get all emotional…😉 Be well, God Bless. See you t’row! 🙋🏻

  7. Got the answer before any of the words, which helped me in figuring out “hairdo”. Good fun!

  8. Hi, all! Fairly easy puzzle. Self-jumbled GROWTH & HAIRDO a few times.
While taking care of Jerry after his last illness a few months ago, I lost 20 pounds & even with eating as much as I can as often as I can, I have gained back only 2 pounds. My doctor told me to eat cheeseburgers & to put a big blop of sour cream on everything. Getting onto my scales, I hope it will weight me more rather than less.
    Enjoy your Saturday.

    • Lelia, As long as you’re feeling well and eating well, the weight will come back in its own time, I’m sure. Stress will do that, as we all know. Try eating more Italian food! Sour cream’s got nothing on us! Hope you have a great day! 🙋🏻

    • Lelia, I know I put too much weight on by drinking lots of juice. It’s good for that but of course has a high sugar content.

  9. Hey Denny, Yes it was a fun puzzle. I’m not touching HAIRDO anymore today, though!
Glad you dropped in, we don’t see enough of you. Hope you have a great day! 🙋🏻

  10. Hi, Steve! Yes, the Reuben in one of my favorite sandwiches. I thought of Vermeer as Vermouth but couldn’t think of a food for Utrillo. Very funny skit!
Yesterday you said you were returning to your nap. Sacrificing any of your nap to answer me is unthinkable, so I am going to try to post before noon, our time. I love your quick replies which allows me to think about your songs & funny stuff and decide how to respond.
This is a science question & answer. Question: How do you tell the difference between a male chromosome & a female chromosome? Answer: You pull down its genes.
When I was in high school I LOVED doing the Asimov quiz every Sunday (we didn’t have a daily) and made doctor a lot because I was a voracious reader. When I read that you were doing a daily, I told myself NOT to add that to my agenda, but I gave in 2 weeks ago & was hooked in one day. Did horrible at first but have gotten better. I still laugh at, “Who reads the questions to you?”
    Uh oh! It’s 12:10.

    • Lelia, In some areas they serve a Reuben but substitute coleslaw for sauerkraut. Do you know what that is called. If you have to look it up no fair answering.

      • Harry, at Miracle Mile I eat a hot pastrami sand with coleslaw in it and I believe it is called a New Yorker. Jerry eats the hot sand with sauerkraut and I think they call it The Straw.

    • Hi Lelia – I figured you knew about the Reuben sandwich, but just wanted to be sure because that pun is too good to miss!
No need to time your replies; my schedule is pretty erratic depending on factors like whether I go grocery shopping in the morning, how I slept, etc and of course how good these Jumble comments are (Some just demand immediate replies!) Please continue to post at your convenience.

Another Asimov addict! As Angela and I were discussing, I aced the one two days ago about songs, and then scored a 1 yesterday about Dr. Seuss – keeps me humble.
I sometimes do well on categories I don’t know much about, and then blow the science ones that I think I’m good at.

Love the ‘gene’ joke. Take care of yourself!

      • Hi again, Steve! I was happy to hear that your schedule is like ours, doing stuff when we feel like it with actually no schedule. I’ll obey you & post at my convenience and hope neither of us relinquishes our nap for posting.
Uh huh! Addicted to Asimov again! First few days scored below 6. Only song I missed was The Muppets singing about not easy being GREEN. Thought I’d ace Dr. Seuss but missed 3. Got all states right but used a list of state names.
I’ve had that joke for you for months, written by a scientist. Finally sent it because it contains such a hilarious pun.
So much more to do today that I’m thinking I might have to stack up the Jumbles for a week and concentrate on taking care of Jerry. Surgery Mon., 7:30 a.m. Thank you for your much needed & appreciated words, “Take care of yourself!”

  11. Well, you certainly do indeed enjoy, and have a talent for what my relatives in Holland refer to as “woordspelingen,” In feite houdt je echt van woordspelingen! Erg slim, en grappig ook.

      • LOL….That’s a mouthful, right? And Harry, you don’t know a Rueben ( or his sister) until you’ve had one in NY! 🙋🏻

    • Eric! Thank you! You said a mouthful! I think the woordspelingen is like a punster, a GOOD punster…( like a Wordsmith), but the rest? C’mon! …Italian, born and raised in Brooklyn! I might get arrested for even trying to say all that! Help me out here! 🙋🏻

    • Ok, Eric, I went right to the source…GOOGLE! LOL..”In fact you really love puns! Very smart, and funny too”! Close? And then I hit for it to be spoken in Dutch…
Yea, for sure I’d get arrested in Brooklyn! Thanks again! You made my day! 🙋🏻

        • Up already? Not a chance! Slid right off my tongue…..! Imagine Eric with the Luigi Board? Knock those guys down a peg or two! I may have found a secret weapon! 😂😂

    • Hi Eric! “Word play”, indeed! Even my Utrecht-born wife had a little trouble with the rest though. Her family would visit Holland every summer, and it got increasingly harder every year because the language would change slightly every year. They told her she had a “cute accent”, though.
There’s a story today on the BBC News website titled “Why people think the Germans aren’t funny.” She has some opinions on that also, as you might imagine.

  12. Angela, Harry did not answer me back. Was I correct in naming his sand with coleslaw The New Yorker?

    • Lelia, Harry does that to all of us. Leaves us hanging. From what I know, here in NY, it s called a Rachel. It may be different in other parts of the country, IDK. I’m just seeing this, because I’m sailing, and a whole bunch of messages just came in all at once. 🙋🏻
