🇺🇸  HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY 🇺🇸  GOD BLESS AMERICA 🇺🇸

🎶”O say can you see, by the dawn’s early light..What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming…O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave….”🎶

Strange what one retains hidden deeply in the abysses of the mind. As soon as I saw today’s cartoon, I thought Herbert Hoover, “A chicken in every pot”…And then living here in NYC, adjacent to NJ, the mind being what it is…I thought, Chris Christie and “Let them eat cake..” Politics. It took more than 100 years for the “Star-Spangled Banner” to become our National Anthem… It took 2-3 days for Christie to close the beaches to the public, lounge on said beach, but “not get any sun…” because he had a baseball cap on! Ah, politics…Not the time? Not the place? I shouldn’t be WRESTLING with all this here..? Maybe it’s just all these pompous TYCOONS, maybe it’s the SCORCHing temps we’ve been having, coupled with the cloying HUMIDity…that’s RUGBYing me the wrong way…OK, I’ve exercised my Freedom of Speech on this INDEPENDENCE DAY..On to the puzzle! The words were easy, breezy. The eye candy, not much to SING about. I’ll go with the 🦅 EAGLE, our AMERICAN symbol, of strength, longevity, and majestic beauty. The cartoon? How Jeff manages to draw a simple cartoon, and immediately allow us to recognize a decades old President is amazing! STELLAR art work! The dialogue, mentioning “States” and “Song/Tune”..handed us 🎶”Country Music”🎶. A piece of CAKE! Terrifically ORCHESTRATED! I love the segue, I love Country music, I love America! The Star-Spangled Banner…? Let’s be honest, despite its virtues, it’s not the easiest song to sing. We’ve all seen and heard enough cringe worthy renditions over the years to attest to that. But it prevails, as does our GREAT COUNTRY!

God Bless America! Today and every day!
Wishing Everyone a safe, relaxing 4th of July…With a FLAG at every home, a chicken on every grill, and all the cake we can eat! 🇺🇸 Enjoy! 🇺🇸  🙋🏻

    • I don’t know who you are, it’s coming up Anonymous, but thank you very much! And Happy Birthdsy to all us Americans! 🇺🇸🙋🏻

        • Nice to meet you, Moose. Going by your comment, including the word, “another”, it appears you’ve been here before. One, thank you again for the complement. Two, why not have your name posted, so that we’ll be able to “recognize” you in the future? I’d hate to not “know” anyone using the word “Gem” in the same sentence as my name..!!! LOL. Thanks, again, Moose. Hope you have a great day! 🇺🇸🙋🏻

      • Hi Moose I have been wondering what happened to to you. Used to be that you and I were among the few that made brief posts. Also, you were kind enough to help Mike do Jumble when he had other things to do. Welcome back, good to have you on board again. 🌞

    • Thank you very much, Sheryl! Happy B’day to us all! 🇺🇸 Enjoy! 🙋🏻

  1. Happy 4th, everyone!
“Post free or die” – Free speech – I’m in favor of it!

Hey Angela – I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the phrase since I don’t speak the lingo, but if it’s the thought that counts, then this one’s for you:

    🎵 “Saturday in the park
I think it was the Fourth of July
    Saturday in the park
I think it was the Fourth of July
    People dancing, people laughing
    A man selling ice cream
    Singing Italian songs
    Eh cumpari, ci vo sunari
Can you dig it (yes, I can)
And I’ve been waiting such a long time” 🎵

(Remember when I said that Chicago would show up later in the year?) 🙋‍♂️

    • Good morning! The Italian phrase? I think it means like..”Friend, pal, do you like the sound”? So I suppose..”Can you dig it”? One of my favorite Chicago songs. We use “compari” to mean a lot of things. Godfather, close friend, someone from the same town as our ancestors in Italy. Good song choice for today! As you can see, I really was forced to “Stick with the script” for mine, or I could have really “let loose”! Thanks for the shout out! 🎶🙋🏻

  2. Good puzzle this morning though it took me a few minutes to figure out scorch – only one vowel Yikes! Steve, your reference to Eh Cumpari, chi vo sunari was used in Saturday in the Park with George but it is actually an Italian song sung in Sicilian. It goes back to the 1950’s and was made famous by Julius La Rosa. It is about the sounds of musical instruments. Eh Cumpari, chi vo sunari, chi si sona u friscalettu (flute)It keeps repeating adding instruments u saxofona, u trombona , u violinu etc. etc. I think it was also sung in one of the Godfather movies. Happy Fourth of July everyone. I suspect we will have our usual fireworks in San Franicsco. We hear the boom of the cannon but won’t see anything because of the fog. I’ll resort to PBS & Boston Pops.

    • Hey Betty. Really good puzzle this morning. I’ve been “singing” 🎶”Eh Cumpari”🎶 in my head ever since Steve alluded to it. It was like the “Italian national anthem” to us! Happy 4th to you also! 🇺🇸 Enjoy! 🙋🏻

    • Thanks Betty! I’m not familiar with the musical, but one of my earliest memories was seeing Julius LaRosa on Arthur Godfrey’s TV show. (Jump right in here, Earl and Lelia!) 😉

I remember my grandmother’s and mother’s shock when the popular LaRosa was fired on the air. (Curse you,Godfrey! “You’re Fired!” – the Trump of his day.)

  3. Today’s puzzle gave me a hard time ; almost gave up on scorch. Happy Independence Day to all; great to be an American! 🌞 🎆

  4. LOL, Sue. No scorching today! AMEN to being an American! Happy 4th to you also! 🇺🇸🙋🏻

  5. You would have to *be* Herbert Hoover to think the Star-Spangled Banner was a catchy tune! Sing along, now!:

“And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”

IMHO, we, the song and the country all still have room for improvement. But isn’t that our strength? The Founders gave us the means and the possibility of improving all the time, possibilites denied to other peoples throughout history.

Off my soapbox now – I think I’ll go with this:

    🎵” God-****, Well I declare!
    Have you seen the like?
Their walls are built of cannonballs
Their motto is ‘Don’t Tread On Me!’ ” 🎵

    • You crossed over! LOL…But this isn’t “Name That Tune”! 😂😂 But, it is Independence Day…so… As long as we watch the borders, right? 😂🇺🇸🙋🏻 PS..Hoover merely signed it into law…After 100 years somebody had to “step up to the plate”..😉😉
Remember “All in the Family’s” theme song….🎶”Mister we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again…” 🇺🇸🙋🏻

      • Hoover got kind of a bum rap. He did great humanitarian relief work in Europe after WWI. But then that little ‘Depression’ thing tripped him up!
Great memory on the theme song! Followups, if any, over to “in Other words.”

  6. Hi, Mike et al! LOVED the answer “Country Music” for the cartoon. SCORCH was difficult for me because my grandmother pronounced it “scortch” so all these years I’ve thought that people were leaving out the “t.”
I am proud to be an American; Scottish, Irish, English, a little French, & my dad said a tiny bit Cherokee Indian.
We will celebrate at younger daughter’s house with barbeque, swimming, and watching an annual close-by fireworks display. Happy July 4th to all!!

      • Steve, here is your day-late response. Your thinking of that comic so quickly was priceless. I didn’t get the emoji until I remembered asking in London for directions to the loo.
Lucky Maple Leafs getting 2 great players! Did you read that Patrick has 4 boys? Two more and he’ll have a hockey team. Do you think I’ll get their games here on TV?
Thanks for giving me another song. I don’t know the one you sent about the girl competing with the Maple Leafs’ game for attention, but I sang Joni’s “Both Sides Now” all afternoon. Better late than never?

        • Definitely better late than never, I’m in no hurry!
Marleau had all four of his boys (and wife) with him on the ice when the Sharks celebrated his 500th goal last season. I think you’ll only see the Leafs when they play the Coyotes.

So there were 4 of us on the same page with that emoji 😄

Song is “Raised on Robbery” if you want to hear the rest of the sordid story.
          See you tomorrow!

  7. Hey, gotta go soon, but I did want to ask – were you ever into Mystery Science Theater 3000 when it was being shown? Seems like it would have appealed to the Luigi Board with the rapid-fire commentary.

      • No, just an old joke! I am going to turn on the Sox (just got in myself), but then have to,help my wife with dinner, etc. at 8 PDT
        (11 EDT).
        Followups over at OTHER words

        • LOL…Yea, I got the joke, but the Sox were at the bottom at the 5th..! They’re killing it..8-zip. And the Yankees lost today…! Mikes doing his happy dance! ⚾️⚾️ 👴🏻. This is one of the emojis…there’s another also…
