ODOFRLE = FLOORED

Happy Friday morning everyone!  It was a very simple puzzle today with PLAGUE being the only word that required a second glance.  David used an abecedarian word (ADOPT) which is unique as there are only 860 of them in the English language.  With all of the clue words solved, it was on to the cartoon.  Writing out the letters, the answer was immediately visible for a swift and uplifting finish.  I didn’t find any hidden details in Jeff’s cartoon so I’ll wait patiently for another chance on Saturday.  I hope everyone has a wonderful Friday and if you’re traveling, please be safe.  I’ll see you tomorrow.  ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Good morning! Abecedarian! A logophiles delight! Great post. ๐Ÿ”  ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Be still my heart! ๐Ÿ˜€ Did you see the emoji I awarded you? Loved this puzzle, but it’s just not taking me anywhere…๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

          • I saw it and just knew you deserved it! Says it all! The Abecedarian Emoji! Lights up the day! Batteries not included…Still waiting in line..? Maybe you should have gone yesterday! ROTDL….๐Ÿ” ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

          • Mike, Just want to be sure that when I laughed about you still being in line and “should have gone y’day”, it was in reference to ydays puzzle..waiting in line! I wasn’t joking about your plight! ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

              • Life after 9/11….Whole new ballgame. Ballgame? So who’s IN first…Who’s IN SECOND???!!! Tip of the cap! I’m happy for you…(She says while wearing her Judge Jersey….)!!!! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ” . ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

              • Uh…Would you rather be in 3rd..and 10.5 out? LOL…Baby steps…Repeat after me..”The more weeks to go, the more games to win..”! โšพ๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

              • There you have it! Think positive! Like me…I’m positive we don’t have a shot in hell…๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  2. Not particularly pleased with either of these, but my brain is a trifle frazzled and I guess they are the best I can do:

    1. The FOURTH PLAGUE began to spread when the peasants ADOPTed the LOWLY cricket as a lucky charm, and the locusts were left to multiply.
    2. A FOURTH “floor” resident ADOPTed a rescue dog and his building was PLAGUED with an infestation of fleas and LOWLY ticks.
No problems with either clue words or the solution– a respite after yesterday’s challenging solution. Happy Friday every one. Thunder boomers head my way but thankfully no hail or tornadoes–thoughts go out to those in danger yesterday and today.

    • Hi Earl. Good morning. Both are worthy, but given a choice, I’ll vote for #2. Love it. Plagues early in the morning….not so much. I share your sentiment for those affected by these terrible storms. Stay safe ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  3. Despite the great words, and period piece descriptive cartoon, nothing’s FLOORing me today. Maybe I’m too relaxed this morning, and losing my LEDGE. Maybe because I’m not the biggest fan of elevators. (I usually take steps to avoid them)! Maybe because the only song coming into my head is Josh Groban’s …”๐ŸŽถYou LIFT me up…”๐ŸŽถ! I’m PLAGUED with ennui! Earl, sheet music, please! Like Mike said, nothing’s jumping off the page today. The creative juices aren’t flowing…(maybe lost in all that rum and coconut water)!! I fell like a LOWLY member of the FOURTH Estate! They may PULLey my credentials! I’ve searched for some eye candy, and except for that upLIFTed backward held hand for the second day in a row, nothing’s RISING up to the occasion. There’s the ubiquitous “B in P”, who always manages to PUSH my BUTTONS, but at this point, I find it wrong on so many LEVELS. It needs to be SHAFTed! I’ve STAIRed at this puzzle for so long, and noDING! This is really bringing me DOWN. I fell so EMPTY inside…I just can’t come UP with anything…cue the MUZAK…
Wishing everyone a truly UPLIFTing day! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Come on, Big Guy..You won last night, the sun’s shining, you’re at the DMV…oh…UM, well…You won last night, the sun’s shining..๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • Angela ya did good, as many New Yokers would say. And since in the UK elevators are “lifts” I think you did swell with reference to Josh Grobin’s song. I’ll be humming it along with “Climb Evry Mountain ” if like me , you prefer stairs to lifts.
Maybe you could find a way to punish us with some Otis Rdding songs?

      • Yo!, I “taught” it wuz “Ya DONE gud” in Noo Yawk, but I’m not a native or an expert, so I’ll just ask advice.

          • That’s not the half of it – I slipped in “Dock of the Bay” before you, too! And your dreams becoming Jumbles? A month or so ago, I actually dreamt I met Harry! Talk about scary! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ ๐Ÿ˜‰

            • O, TIS is not right!…No, no, no…You didn’t SLIP (you missed that one) it in before me. I was still typing while you were interloping. We just pulled into our SLIP a few minutes ago…I am now LITERALLY ๐ŸŽถSittin” on the dock of the bay๐ŸŽถ..and trust me, there’s nothing punishing about this…It’s the stuff DREAMS are made of…Play nice! ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

          • To be fair, I may have grown up closer to NYC than Earl, even though you’re both in the same state.

      • Otis Redding made “Sittin on the dock of the bay” sound like punishment!

      • Hi Earl, I like your Brooklyn accent, but if you really want to sound native, you need to say..”Ya done good”! Done being the more colloquially emphatic verb! LOL..I’ll give you a chuckle…I first looked at the puzzle 3:30 this morning. And I saw the letters, but said Plaque. So I’m thinking, “Ok, there’s usually a plaque in the elevators saying Otis, good opening line..” I fell asleep. That internal clock woke me an hour or so later, and I’m thinking…it was a G! (Is this what my dreams have become…Jumbles?!!…LOL). Back to sleep…So when I went to post this morning, here’s Otis Redding in my head! You read my mind! (And God knows, good Sir, you don’t want to find yourself there! It’s a scary place)! ROTFL..And Josh Groban was all I could come up with. Beautiful song, but really didn’t HOIST my petard! LOL..But Otis Redding a punishment? “๐ŸŽถI’ve Been Loving You Too Long”๐ŸŽถ, ๐ŸŽถ”Try a Little Tenderness”๐ŸŽถ…and “๐ŸŽถSittin’ on the Dock of the Bay”๐ŸŽถ..we just played last night on the boat! Otis RAISES my spirits..! Weather still beautiful here..making me wonder what’s UP with that..๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Yeah Steve and Angela you are both spot on in catching my half-hearted attempt at a NYC/Brooklyn accent! Gave away my Western NY roots there, didn’t I? You both raise me up to more than I can be and comfort my pain from sitting on the dock too long.

        • Kind Sir, your attempt was just fine. As eloquent as you are, be honest, you don’t want a Brooklyn accent! Even I’ve learned to control myself, I only bring mine out as need be. (And Steve only knows what I’ve taught him!)! LOL..And, likewise, you RAISE my spirits too! Hope you’re having a great day! ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

          • Long before your teaching, authentic as it is, there was Phil Silvers, Jackie Gleason and pals, Milton Berle … a lot seeped into the brain back then! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ

  4. Hi, Mike et al! Happy Friday! Easy puzzle except for, I agree with you Mike, PLAGUE needing a second look.
Mike, thanks for saying you were having so much fun yesterday . After saying youโ€™d be on a trip for a couple of days, I kept wondering if it was a fun trip or a sad trip. Iโ€™m relieved that it was my first choice, fun.
    Enjoy your day, all!!

  5. Hi, Steve! Glad you got to see cactus Christmas trees in Tucson. Arriving from Arkansas, we visited momโ€™s sister in Tucson whom we thought lived in โ€œTuckson.โ€
A fun thing Iโ€™ve gotten to do in your neck of the woods was going to the Pacific coast & then up the coast to Vancouver, visiting some amazing aquariums along the way. I donโ€™t remember if one was near Oakland but my favorite had a room-sized aquarium with a glass or plastic walk-way through it. There were huge fish swimming above, beside, & under us. Enjoy your day!

    • Hi Lelia – That sounds like “Aquarium of the Bay” near Pier 39 in SF, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium is supposed to be great, but I must confess, I haven’t been to either one.
Hey Betty, help me out here!
      Have a great day!

  6. Hi all – Took me longer to get FOURTH than PLAGUE, then I wanted the answer to be UPLIFTING but that wasn’t close, so,had to write out the letters. The blond is wearing red in my paper – it’s the elevator operator who’s in purple!

  7. HI, Mike! Iโ€™ve never heard you say before youโ€™re having a bad day, so I desperately wanted to say something cheerful but am drawing a blank. In Phoenix it takes HOURS to renew our driverโ€™s license. This is the best I can do from The Sound of Music.
When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when standing in line at the DMV makes me sad,
I simply remember my favorite things, (my family & people telling me they love my writing) and then I donโ€™t feel so bad.
    See you tomorrow.

    • Hi Lelia! The trip was great and fun was had by all. I woke up remembering my birthday was in a few days and that my license needed to be renewed. With dread in my stomach, I braved the highway and was in line by 10:46. My number was called at 12:23, and was out the door at 12:29. The kicker is that to get a Real ID, I need to go back when my drivers license after it comes in the mail along with my social security card, passport, and tax bill! It’s my fault for not looking into enough as I just brought my passport. Oh well, I’ll be sure to be there right when they open next time. Have a wonderful weekend. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  8. Steve & Leila: The best aquarium in these parts is the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It is huge and has simply wonderful displays. I went with my son and his wife to a conference there. Their company had reserved the facility for dinner and entertainment. They had various food stations one of which was a sushi station. I simply could not bring myself to eat sushi with all those fish swimming around us. The aquarium at Pier 39 is not nearly as elaborate but popular with tourists. We also have Steinhart Aquarium here in S.F. in Golden Gate Park. While not as comprehensive as Monterey Bay, it is very popular and has a good selection of different fish.

    • Betty, Hi. I’m realizing from this post, this is you. Do you know that it’s coming up as Anonymous? When I saw the reply y’day about Spike, I thought it was you, but I wasn’t sure because of the name. Notice, even your icon has changed. Please don’t think I ignored you, I just wasn’t sure who I’d be replying to. I don’t even know how to help you correct it. Maybe Steve can help ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • I’ll leave the tech stuff to Mike, I’m retired!
Don’t know why her credentials would have changd or been erased.

  9. Thanks for the information, Angela. Don’t know why I’m coming up anonymous. My details seem to be appearing below the blank reply space. I am not at all tech saavy so don’t know how to correct it. But you’re right I did post the information about
Spike yesterday and about the aquariums today.
    Betty

  10. This situation is really weird since I realized that the note I just posted did say it was posted by Betty. I’ll never figure this stuff out.

    • Betty, Yes now your name is back. Very weird. At least it seems resolved. Again I apologize for not replying last night. I get in enough trouble talking to people I know, let alone Anonymous people! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I was distracted after telling you, because once again there was a shooting somewhere in this d–n city, and my friends sister worked at the hospital where it happened. A little bit of panic. Thank God she’s ok. But, I did want to tell you about coyotes all over NYC! I’ll get back to you later! Glad it’s fixed. ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • My niece who uses the highway where the plane crashed today in CA was tied up in traffic for hours and had to drive in reverse for miles to get to work– but she suffered nothing but frustration!

        • Hey Earl, I get real time news alerts .It was all over the news here as soon as it happened. The photos looked devastating. I believe only 2 people were injured. Thankfully, no fatalities. I’m glad your niece is safe. Always something, huh? I hope you’re enjoying your evening. Be well. ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  11. Fourth (as in floor) is another one of those clue words that I think might be intentionally related to the puzzle answer. Not sure, though.

  12. Good evening friends Have to jump in on Otis Redding. Nobody and I mean nobody not even the Queen of soul Aretha Franklin can top Otis on singing Respect. In the album he just floors that song. I am not taking anything away from Miss Franklin but he just outshines her. Oh,the words and cartoon answer was easy breezy. Till tomorrow stay well. Just another fact. The company Otis elevator is a local 1 outfit and housed in Manhattan. You haven’t lived until your 1st week installing new elevators and with just the floor platform left you have a runaway cab (with no sides) hit the roof. and stops half was up the door opening. Lot of prays being said on that ride.

    • Hey Paul, How’re you? Yes, I’m with you on this. Otis had a great voice. Such a shame he died so young. 26? Insane. No atheists in elevator wells, huh? ๐Ÿ˜€ Be well. ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป
