CARTOON ANSWER:

THE STRUGGLING YOUNG GOLFER WANTED TO QUIT, BUT HER COACH RECOMMENDED SHE —

AUYCRTSSETHEO = STAY THE COURSE

Good morning everyone and happy Friday!  No trouble with the clue words today as they all came to me at first glance.  GAUDY barely edged out THEORY as my pick for the most difficult word to decipher because you just don’t see it written or used too often.

Moving along to the cartoon, we find ourselves out on the golf course where a coversation is occurring between a young player and her instructor.  She is clearly upset and you can almost feel her pain just by looking at the way Jeff drew her eyes.  Her coach offers encouraging words as she hands him her scorecard but her own self doubt may have already gotten the better of her.  The solve for the surprise answer was effortless and came instantly upon reading the dialogue and sentence.  If you found yourself having trouble, THE was spelled out in order within the anagram and would have been a great starting point.

Looking at the detail of the cartoon, the coach has an image on his hat that looks like a golf ball as well as some lettering on his shirt.  Zooming in on the shirt, H.S.E. is visible in capital letters with LADY and RO—- underneath.  I’m not sure of the meaning but I’ve added the photo below.  If you have a guess or a definitive answer, be sure to let me know in the comments section.  Have a wonderful Friday and I’ll see you tomorrow!  🙂

  1. Good morning! KISSES thrown at your Theory! Did you hear that Swooshing sound all the way in NH last night? I’m down for the count! 🙁🙋🏻

  2. Golf. ⛳️ BOGEY, Humphrey. IRON, the vitamin. SWING, music. GREENS, vegetables. HEAD DOWN, pray. SAND WEDGE, something to eat. ACE, my nickname. SLICE, pizza. LOW AND SLOW, uh, …it’s a family friendly blog…!
But you can see where I’m going with this, right ? I never did FOLLOW THROUGH with Golf. I’d just be a SCRATCH golfer anyway, you know, SWING the CLUB and scratch my head! But, no scratching my head with this puzzle. No chance to MISREAD any of the FORE words. (Was Kisses RELEASEd before? I think I remember Kissed). Anyway, Easy, TEEsy…So, STRAIGHT to the cartoon: The dialogue..”Be patient”, “Get there”, “Quit”..You just TAKEAWAY the answer. A ZINGER…Stay the COURSE! Once again, Jeff, OVER THE TOP! Eye candy? Not knowing golf, is that a little BIRDIE lower left, near the TEE? LOL..
But now, the cartoon itself. I’ll CUT right to the chase. Young girl, golfing for Hamilton Southeastern High. The “Royals Bleed BLUE”! Coach’s got the Lion on the cap and the HSE on the blue shirt. He’s good, he’s PAR for the COURSE. But the girl? GIMME a break! Jeff, I just FEEL there shouldn’t be any FLEXability here! Maybe ADDRESS it again? WOODnt you rather she wasn’t wearing that purple shirt?
And Harry, Just for you: I found a WOOD that’ll take at least 5 STROKES off your game. A pencil…✏️✏️
    Enjoy the weekend, Everyone…Remember, Don’t drink and 🏌DRIVE! 🏌🙋🏻

      • I caught it right away, but I really looked because of the color of the shirt. That opened up the can of …spiders! LOL 🏌🙋🏻

        • I knew it was a school (possibly his daughters) but didn’t follow through. I was trying to get the IOW post out and making breakfast so my fault for not researching it a bit. You guys are like stalkers, LOL! 🤣😂😂🤣

          • Hey, You made the stalker out of me! LOL It seems creepy, too! But I figure, what the hey. It’s there, it’s fair! You can’t beat yourself up…Make a little slip up in the future, and there’ll be plenty of that! 😂😂 Your write up was eloquent, and caring. Like you!! (Awww) 😂🙋🏻

          • I caught your FOLLOW THROUGH. And you think I don’t pay attention! 😂🙋🏻

              • Mike, Mike, Mike..ET TU? Do I “look” like things go under my radar? Have you “seen” my radar? 😂❤️🙋🏻

              • Smiling? I’m crying I’m laughing so hard! And I caught the DIMPLES! We really should take this show on the road…(And I’m hearing the masses saying…”God, not soon enough”! 😂😂🙋🏻 Later..

              • LOL..Yes, it is! Been a RELEVANT in the room for a while now! We need to get a GRIP! And stop STALKING for now. As always, it’s soooo SLICE, tho! Enjoy the PLAY date. Hope they’re not too ROUGH on you! 😂🏌🙋🏻

              • 😂 You’re definitely IN CONTENTION today! Who knew golf could be such fun? I just thought it was a nice relaxing way to get really frustrated and extremely disappointed in ones self! PUTT I was wrong, huh? 😂🏌🙋🏻

              • Yep. Like my friends here. Always DRIVEing, never want to walk with me. But for golf, they walk. Well not really, they DRIVE around in their little CARTS. Pampered…Then they swear they shoot in the 70’s…any colder than that they quit! Like I said, pampered! 😂🏌🙋🏻

      • No, I didn’t look up schools. I just took a SHOT, and went with the HSE on the coach’s shirt. That was my PIVOT. Then I just PUTTed around for the rest. 🏌🙋🏻

  3. In the COURT of Queen Elizabeth I, the neck ruffles were GAUDY and one historian put forth the THEORY that her lips had never been KISSED. But I suspect if the suitors had stayed the course and kept teeing up they might have scored a birdie.

Relatives come later but I had time to look at the Jumble and read Angela’s brilliant commentary and solve the puzzle. Here comes an excuse– because of the number of circled letters I had to write them out. Answer came quickly however.
Tangent: another man with a paunch– and a coach at that.

    • LOL..Your sentence SCORES! MASTERful! TBT, my first go around was a little too..TOO! Golf lends itself to a slew of double entendres! But this being family friendly and all, and realizing it was Jeff’s daughter, I KNOCKED DOWN the FEELing! LOL! Thank you for the shout out. I think Jeff’s gotten much better with the paunches, tho. Today was a little off PATH. Glad you stopped by. The rains are coming for us. Hope it doesn’t affect your family plans. Enjoy! 🏌🙋🏻

    • Hi Sue – While we were talking about Kris Kristofferson yesterday, it was his birthday (6/22/1936), still kickin’ at 81, apparently! I saw him on WGN TV Chicago a couple of times last winter doing public service announcements for a Veterans assistance organization.

      • Steve, good to know that Kris K. is still around. Saw him several years ago at The Grand Old Opry and loved every minute. If I remember correctly, he was one of The Highway Men and they made sweet music. “Why Me Lord” is, also, a great song that Kris wrote and sang. Country may not be cool now; however, still my favorite music and that of some of my family. Thanks for the info on Kris; I will now go to my time out corner. 😉

        • No problem, Sue. My brother’s favorite line was from Sunday morning coming down” when he says “Then I fumbled through my closet for my clothes and found my cleanest dirty shirt”.
BTW, “in other words” is open for business again and Harry left a message there for you.

  4. Hi, Mike et al!! I knew the cartoon answer instantaneously. Wrote “crout:” for COURT as in “sour crout” but it’s “sauerkraut.” Oops. Corrected that fairly quickly & backed into THEORY. Done!
Mike, I was going to tell you today about the game Rummycub, pronounced Rummycube, which is played like the card game Rummy but is played with plastic tiles like Scrabble tiles except twice as large & rectangle shaped with numbers on them rather than letters, but I’ll let you enjoy playday & will tell you later.
Steve, I’m commenting to you but have to put groceries away.
Enjoy your day, all. See you tomorrow.

    • Mike, I knew there was one quick thing I wanted to tell you: Enjoy your Live PD tonight!! While Jerry & I are watching, when we see something funny or in AZ or unusual, one of us, usually me, says, “I wonder if Mike saw this one.” I went to the late night commenting once but decided not to comment because it looked like it was too much fun, and I didn’t want to get hooked because I am old (as Steve says constantly) & I need my sleep.

      • I just want to clarify that I only say that about myself, because I know it’s true in that case, never about Lelia! 😄

      • Hi Lelia! What a coincidence that you say that because I do (almost) the same thing. If there’s a priority situation unfolding, I often think “oh no, I hope the Ohlund’s aren’t near this!”
The after hours chatter is surely alot of fun and I hope that you do decide to pop in, even if it is only for a quick hello. All my best for a wonderful weekend. 😀

  5. Hi, Steve!! Speaking of weather again, while driving on a really hot road in AZ we can see heat waves up ahead that look like water flowing across the highway, but it is a mirage. Heat waves like that cause planes to need more speed to lift off the runway. While talking to his dad about weather Mike said his dad mentioned planes not being able to get enough lift.
Steve, when I was little my mom taught me Mairzy Doats but only the first 4 lines. I didn’t know about “mares eat oats” until my cousin taught me in high school. A song with unusual lyrics that I liked from my time was Tutti Frutti with bops & a bam boom. I also liked Zip A Dee Do Da.
Thanks for telling me that our AZ ice hockey guy made Rookie of the Year. Woo hoo!
How’s your colored confetti situation from the Warriors parade? All cleaned up?

    • As a matter of fact, just found two more yellow pieces in the driveway, but it’s tapering off!

My checker at the supermarket today told me that at his house yesterday (inland from here, so they hit about 108°), he set his air conditioning at about 85° to not stress it, and it still took about three hours for it to cool off. Much cooler here today.
Be careful that those mirages aren’t actually a flash flood in an arroyo! See you tomorrow. 🙂

      • Steve, Jerry is only comfortable when the thermostat is on 77 degrees in the house. I am more comfortable with it on 80 and freeze at 77. Because he can’t do more than wear shorts & a thin t-shirt to cool down, I leave it on 77, but I have to wear long sleeved tops and sometimes a light jacket in the house all summer & sometimes into November. If I have a busy few days indoors without going anywhere, I am sometimes completely oblivious to our high outside temps while walking around inside freezing. I don’t feel bad about it though, because most of our couple friends have one of each and sometimes forget to play nice and have knock down drag outs over the thermostat temp. I’d much rather just put on a jacket.
