Happy Wednesday morning everyone!  We’re at the middle of the week and the puzzles are getting progressively harder, so let’s break this one down and see what we had today.  UPEND didn’t come at first glance, but as soon as I formed UP, the rest fell right into place.  As I wrote it down, I thought for sure it was going to be the stumper of the day.  WOBBLE was a piece of cake and then I ran into a major roadblock with GYRATE.  For the first couple of minutes I tried to figure it out by staring it and tried making different letter combinations in my head but nothing seemed to work.  As my frustration grew, I decided that it was time to blow the dust off my trusty notepad and put it to good use.  On my twelfth attempt of self-jumbling the letters, I had formed RATEGY and that’s when I finally saw the solution.  I don’t recall having this much trouble with a single word in such a long time and it was great to finally feel a challenge once again.  Moving along to the cartoon, Jeff brought us into a barbershop where the Beatle’s are getting a trim.  The answer came to mind immediately and I wrote out the letters just to check myself.  Sure enough it all matched up and another wonderful puzzle was complete.  I hope you had an easier time than I did and I’ll see you tomorrow.  😀

    🎶” I’ve had enough, this is my prayer..That I’ll die livin’ just as free as my hair..”🎶 Ah, HAIR. The CROWNing glory. Ah, the 60’s Revolution…Psychedelic drugs, political unrest, sexual lib, women’s lib, HAIR raising fashion, and all that Sweeeeeet, sweeeeet Music! “The BEATLES are coming…the BEATLES are coming…” Today’s words were juicy, indeed! 1-2-3, easy breezy. Gyrate, great word, as soon as I got GREATY out of head! Took a little spin there for a quick sec. Today’s cartoon: Did British barbers get all TRESSed up like that on the JOB? Was Brian Epstein blonde? Did Ringo carry those drumsticks everywhere? Are all barbers in cartoons bald?….🎶”Yeah, yeah, yeah”???🎶 No? Splitting HAIRS? We see the Beatles before they became millionHAIRS; it’s like seeing the COMBing attraction. Before they came HAIR to cause all that SHEAR madness that they did. 1963…the Last TANGLE In Paris? Oh, I mean Britain? The answer: We got the word JOB, Ringo’s got the BANGing drumsticks, Paul’s reaching UP to his BANGS….BANGo, solved. The eye candy today? The drumsticks are cute, Ringo’s nose a little CUTTING edge, but the MANE attraction? I’m going with that old time Barbicide disinfecting jar in the background. Brought back sweet memories of going to the barbers with my Dad…I could just CURL up and sigh…and 🎶”I’ll Follow the Sun..”🎶…

    • Angela, I agree that Ringo is the most obvious one, and the one reaching up could be Paul ‘cus he’s a bit cuter. My guess is that next to Paul is John, maybe because of the eyelids, leaving George as the one on the right, although I don’t know why George should have a shocked expression. The puzzle? I guessed the answer right away from the answer layout and worked backward. That doesn’t happen often lately.

      • You got them right. Of COARSE Paul, the cutey! John’s nose is a giveaway too. A little exaggerated, but great as a caricature. George looks shocked because he’s going last. His hair hasn’t been cut yet, and he sees what’s COMBing…Poor Baby..it must be HAIR-RAISING for him…And yes, the answer was a SHEAR DELIGHT! ✂️🙋🏻

  3. The blender did a “bang up job” but when it began to WOBBLE and UPENDED, the GYRATIONS spewed a JUICY spray beyond everyone’s imagination.
    Don’t want to seem to brag but today’s clue words and the solution came very easily and without a writing instrument. Guess being a big fan of the Beatles helped. I’ ll “Let It Be” and “Imagine” what it will be like “When I’m 84” –can’t honestly use the correct 64!

    • Angela–I posted before I read your salon-full of hair puns and references. As usual, great job. My only disappointment after reading yours was that you did not incorporate Buzz in your presentation. Why? That was my nickname all through high school and college and until I worked in a country which didn’t really get American nicknames and dropped it. Many of my “old” friends never called me Earl and still don’t 60+ years later. But I get why ” buzz cut” is way far removed from the Fab Fout.

I don’t know why I didn’t go with Buzz this morning. Could be, as you said, Buzz doesn’t come to mind when thinking of the Beatles.   7. I was totally stumped by gyrate. Had all the other words and the answer and it still took paper, pencil and time away from the puzzle. I kept coming up with greatly and artgey. Good to have a challenge and it always amazes me how easy the word is once you figure it out. By the way, Mike, did you notice that Jeff added more puzzles to the Jumble app? Happy Wednesday everyone. Hope you’re surviving the heat in Phoenix okay, Leila. It’s been very warm here but nothing like Arizona.

    • Hi Betty! Thank you for remembering me down here in the sweltering, as Steve calls it, furnace. When I told Jerry you mentioned us he said, “Tell her it’s a dry heat.” We are doing OK so far but haven’t reached the temps yet that require us to wear oven mitts to touch the steering wheel in our car which happens after leaving it in a hot parking lot while we shop.

      • Hang in there Lelia! I’ve experienced the hot steering wheels, but so hot that planes can’t fly?!!

  8. Speaking of “When I’m 64”, Paul, the one who wrote and sang that song, turned 75 on Sunday. Maybe that’s why Jumble gave them a nod.

  9. Ok, I’ll be picky today since it’s the Beatles and the cartoons usually take such pride in getting the historical details right, like yesterday’s Pete Rose.
    Although I love the name of the website I found while searching, “Hair, There, and Everywhere”, the story I’ve most heard is summarized in the link below (which notes that George was the *first* of the classic Fab Four lineup to get the HAIRDO.

  11. I know it’s a dry heat Leila but it’s HOT!! Many years ago we took a trip to your fair state. I just love the area. We left San Francisco where it was 60 degrees and arrived in Phoenix to 110 degree weather. I thought we would melt right there at the airport. The next day my husband wanted to explore so out we went. At about 2;00 in the afternoon he remarked that he didn’t know why there was no one around. I told him that even the lizards had enough sense to hid under a rock midday and only foolish tourists were out and about.

    • Betty, you really made me smile. When I stepped off the train from Arkansas when we moved here, I felt as though I had walked into an oven. When you were exploring at 2 p.m., that was siesta time! Yesterday after my daughter & I finished lunch at The Village Inn, she lay down on our couch while I headed for my bed for a lovely afternoon nap!!

      • It’s a dry heat? Tell Jerry, so is the suface of the sun, but I wouldn’t want to live there (unless, as the old joke says, we go at night!)

  12. Hi, Mike et al! Mike, I have loved your cheerful posts all week so am taking time to mention it. I, too, enjoyed struggling with GYRATE because a challenge is fun, but it was also fun knowing the cartoon answer at first glance. It’s all fun.
    Earl, I especially liked your blender sentence even though the first thing that popped into my mind after figuring out “gyrate” was Elvis. I liked your blender better because it all went together so well, including the visual image of the mess that one makes when the lid falls off.

    Smiled at your comment about our 119F temp, “Yowsa! Be safe in the furnace there!” My whole family likes it when you call Arizona a furnace or fiery furnace.
    I don’t know how to send you a link, but by googling, “God cooking Arizona,” I get a comic titled, “In God’s Kitchen.” To the left is an oven full of flames, black smoke pouring out, & an angel asking, “What are you cooking?” The bearded one sitting with his back to the oven replies, “Arizona. Why?”

  14. Thanks for the compliment LeilaAnn. Elvis never entered my head this AM when I was trying to come up with a sentence with gyrate in some form. Reminds me of his appearance on Ed Sullivan when they would not show his hips in motion. So bizarre considering what is shown on tv today!
    On a different angle– maybe Jumble will do a Simon and Garfunkle theme puzzle someday. They were my all- time favorites and Paul Simon’s “Graceland” is something I can listen to over and over.

    • Earl, you are quite welcome. I remember seeing Elvis on Ed Sullivan and wondering why they wouldn’t show him from his waist down even though on that same show was a female dancer wearing a skimpy costume that showed all of her movements. I remember that the mothers of the screaming teenage daughters were up in arms, but many years later I read an article that said the same thing happened when Frank Sinatra sang as a young one. I wonder what he did to get the parents upset because I only know him as mellow, wonderful, as Angela says, Bow Your Head when you say his name.
      I just listened to Paul Simon sing “Graceland” in Central Park & loved it, as did that huge audience. I liked his singing, guitar playing, & wholesome look.
      Oops, once I get started I write too much. Keep up the great sentences. Thanks.

      • Lelia, that is *exactly* what my mother said when we saw girls screaming at the Beatles and, earlier, Elvis, on tv, that the Bobby-Soxers had screamed just like that at Sinatra; this was nothing new. She also pointed out when people said Rock ‘n Roll songs were stupid, that they had had “Three Little Fishies”, “Mairzy Doates”, “Hut-Sut Ralson on the Rillerra”, and “Flat-Foot Flugey with the Floy-Floy”.

      • Hi Lelia. I think Sinatra (BMH) )caused Mothers to want to lock up their daughters because he was Italian. It was the 40’s and sadly, Italians weren’t held in the highest regard. He was swarthy and “dangerous”. And despite being a skinny little thing, when he opened his mouth to sing, he became a giant. And the girls went wild. He was quite the change from Rudy Vallee and Bing Crosby. And I feel luckily for us, he became more mellow and wonderful with time. I named my puppy Sinatra (BMH). The doctor said that’s probably where my Vertigo began. Calling his name so many times…😀🙋🏻

    • Earl. I’m pretty sure Jumble did do a Simon and Garfunkle puzzle maybe about 2, 2 1/2 years ago. I remember because the resemblances were so on point. Jeff, if you’re out there, only you can shed some light. Elvis exuded sex appeal. When he first appeared on TV it was during the 50’s, right? Did TV know about sex back then? And I agree with you there Earl, Graceland is a Bible. 🎶🙋🏻

You already know how I love hearing about family fun times, but hearing about your notes on your kids lunch napkins & the one your son wrote back to you was so over the top special that I’m sure you already know I shed some happy tears over that. Thank you for trusting me enough to share. I will treasure that memory, also, along with the ones of my own that it brings to mind.
    I asked Jerry what he enjoyed the most on Fathers Day & he named one more that I didn’t have on the list; playing Rummycub with both daughters & me. Then he laughingly added, “I like the candy from you the most.” He does love sweet snacks.
    Our temp hit 119 yesterday and we are wondering if this week it will tie the 122 from the past. Jerry said that when it gets too hot, airlines cancel their flights at Sky Harbor because the planes can’t get enough lift. See you tomorrow.

    • Good evening, Lelia! I’ve never heard of Rummycub but I assume it is a card game. It sounds like you and your family gave him a wonderful and memorable Father’s Day. I believe you said that you bought him Tootsie Rolls, and I do like them myself.
      I heard about the extreme temperatures that you are experiencing and my heart truly goes out to those less fortunate that don’t have the luxury to escape it. I think of the same thing during those subzero nights here in NH so thank goodness they open shelters. I was talking about the weather with my dad today and he mentioned the same story about the airplanes not being able to get enough lift. We are expected to have some rain this weekend so we’re going to try and sneak in a beach day tomorrow. If I don’t post, you know where I’ll be! All my best for a wonderful evening. 🙂

  18. Hi Mike, I’m late doing the puzzle and just had to write to say I mirrored all of your steps today. Gyrate was the most difficult, disecting it this way and that. However! Success was a short trip thereafter.. Growing up, my Mother kept my hair cut just like ‘the boys’ in the cartoon today. That was pre-Beatle time, by the way …But not too pre-Beatle time! Who knows, maybe she was the trend setter back then for the future Beatle hairstyle.

    • Hi Susan! It sure was a fun puzzle that kept us on our toes. To be honest, I never had the “bowl cut”. I remember one of the first acts of summer vacation was to get our hair shaved off while leaving a little rat’s tail in the back! Remember those cuts? How times have changed — for the better. 😀
