Good Thursday morning everyone!  Thank you for coming back day after day to support this website and taking the time to participate by leaving your thoughts on the puzzle.  We’ve created quite a vibrant and respectful community where everyone is welcome and free to say whatever they’d like.  I truly appreciate each and every comment and try my best to reply to all of them.  If your on the fence about posting something, please take the plunge as we’re waiting to hear from YOU!

We didn’t get that stumper of a puzzle that we we’ve been craving for some time now, but we did get some exciting and fresh clue words and an old favorite.  RODEO was back but has been used quite a few times in the past so it was a quick solve.  Perhaps CAGEY gave you a hint of trouble?  It sure is a unique word that isn’t used often so it was fun to decipher.  My only hiccup this morning was with DIVINE, but it came to me by simply staring at it for a few moments.  Moving along to the cartoon, we were transported to a delightful scene of of an early morning feeding in the chicken coop.  As the farmer tosses feed in the background, we see a perturbed rooster expressing his displeasure of not being king of the roost as the hens get first pickings.  I was able to blind solve the final solution by reading the dialogue but wrote out the letters just to make sure I was correct.  Sure enough everything fell neatly into place for a quick solve leaving me excited for a new game tomorrow.  The letter layout was fantastic and gave nothing away.  I hope you had fun with this one and I look forward to hearing you cluck about it in the comments section.  I’ll see you tomorrow!  🐔

  2. 5:30 AM..Scrambling eggs, scrambling words. Jeff’s dialogue giving us these ‘old’ expressions: Pecking Order and Ladies First. FRIED and true. Then his cartoon gives us these ‘newer’ images: Angry Birds and Chicken Fingers! A lot of FOWL play so early in the morning…(Overheard at Costco: HE: “NO, Chickens don’t have fingers and Buffalos don’ t have wings…”. Another HE: “What’d ya talking about, we just had ’em at the Super Bowl Party…”! ME: Walking past, “Huh…”??? SMH.. but I digress…) Great words today. I know we’ve SEED them before, but CAGEY looks so cagey, and RODEO..? Might not be your first, but for 5 letters…it’s cagey too. Anagramically DIVINE! And PUCKER…no wrinkle there. PECKed them all off, faster than a speeding PULLET. And the solve, WINGed it.
    Our cartoon:.A lot of cute little YOLKS here…We can see that Old Red doesn’t rule this ROOST, he’s way outta’ CLUCK. And it looks like he met his HATCH, with this Attila the HEN. The farmer? Seems to have an air of maLAYS..like he has a DOZENS ACHES! Maybe he’s just been COOPed up too long with these chickens. He needs some diversion…CROW some vegetables, maybe. This time of year, they’re ALBUMEN! Eye candy today? That angry bird, pointing that chicken finger… Just daring that rooster to cross the road!

  4. Good morning everyone. Another easy puzzle today with rodeo for me taking an extra minute to get. Looking at the picture you get a clue to the answer by the hens eating their food. The cartoon answer was an instant solve thanks to this hint. We have it so much easier nowadays going to the store and buying pre-packaged chickens. I remember my next door neighbor buying live ones and chopping off their heads and sometime it would get away from them and fly all over their yard for a time. One of the unpleasantries that we don’t have to do anymore Thank God for that. We would get it done already and just have to pluck the feathers. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • My dad has recounted a similar story Paul, and it always surprises me that the “good old days” weren’t always that easy. I’ll take Perdue and day of the week. I’m glad the puzzle was a quick solve and I’ll catch you tomorrow! 😎

  5. Next to the RODEO arena was an adult club where the marquee performer, PUCKER DIVINE, was not CAGEY about who was first in the ” pecking order.”
    I hope no one is offended by my reference to an adult(stripper) club, but when I saw divine and pucker as clue words, the first thing I thought of was that.
    Easy solve for me today. Again no pen required. Love the cartoon and the chickens.

    Comments above about chopping chicken’s heads off brought back memories of an earlier cartoon with the “headless horseman,”

    • Earl, Truly a gentleman and a scholar! The “Headless Horseman”? What we all missed? It was a school house, because Ichabod Crane was a schoolmaster! That was him in the cartoon gladly giving the antagonist directions out of town! Saved his own hide! No wonder the horse looked so mad! Scenic Saw Mill or not, he knew it’d be a h–l of a ride! Jeff got us all with that one! Genius!
      Enjoy the beautiful weather we’re having. (Much too nice a day to be COOPed up in a strip club. May rain tomorrow though! 😅🙋🏻

  8. The words stumped me initially. The solve appeared right away – maybe because I grew up on a farm and we had some chickens. So I backed into the words with a process of elimination.😁

  9. Solved puzzle w/o doing any CWs. For Ang…Met w/ a small group of HS classmates for lunch in Oldenburg, Indiana.{google it} My Chickie Babe and I ordered the whole chicken for 2 special and were surprised that it was cut up like the chickens of my youth. It had a wishbone and a back and the “piece that got through the fence last” One person commented that the tail of the chicken at his house was called the “pope’s nose”. Betcha ya never heard that afore. Fried chicken in Southeastern Indiana is said to be the best ever. You can even get fried gizzards and livers. Love gizzards!

      was the pope, and if you look at a close-up photo
      there is a strange resemblance!

    • Hey Harry. How’re you doin’? Chickie Babe…Hmm..Would that make you the Rooster Rake? 😅 Never heard “Pope’s nose”, I’m afraid to look it up! But I will, right after Oldenburg. I’m ok with chicken, as long as I don’t have to see most of the parts. Liver and gizzards? Pass. My Father used to talk about capozzelle. Might not be spelling it right. Google it. I’d do it for you, but there might be a picture. PASS Something his Grandfather or Father ate, not sure. He tried telling my Mother about it. She checked it out. Catholic as we were, there coulda’ been a divorce! Fried chicken in Indiana better than South Carolina? I’ll have to take you word for it. But I’ve had chicken in SC, and it was out of this world! How’re the tomatoes doing? We got hit with a bunch of blossom-end rot. I figured it was because we either get no rain, or torrential rain. They’re telling me calcium deficiency.. 🐔 🍅 My basil? Off the charts!

      • Sheep’s head eh? I sure would try it. Not much sheep eaten in this part of the world. I absolutely love Osso Bucco but it is hard to find. Lack of calcium is correct. You need to sprinkle 12-12-12 in the fall to help prevent. Blossom end rot usually affects early fruit. If any of the tomatoes have an size to them when you notice it pick them and cut the bad out. You can cook fried green tomatoes or green tomato chili you can also wrap them in plastic wrap and they will turn in a short while and are good. My tomatoes have only been in the ground for about 6 weeks and just started to bloom Noticed my first green one this morning, eyeball size. We get ripe ones in this part of Indiana around the first of August. In another life I used to plant 50 tomato plants!

        • Hey Harry. Yep, you got it. Sheeps head. Kill me now. I think if you saw what it looks like, you might not be so quick to say you’d eat it. It”s gross! Osso Bucco is common here, NY has every kind of food you could imagine. Italian restaurants? They trip over each other! My friends ordered it just the other night. I’ve made it myself. It’s time consuming if you do it right. I’m not really a veal person I’ll make it for my friends, but I don’t eat it. But it does smell DIVINE. We’re seeing the rot now and the tomatoes aren’t that big yet. It’s very disheartening. We picked a few, and cut it off like you said, but they’re not sweet enough. I’m going to do the calcium, I’m just worried about it spreading. I’ve made fried green tomatoes many a time. I like them with eggs. I’m used to having so many tomatoes…Just have to see what happens this year…🍅🍅🙋🏻

  10. As we say down here in the Deep South, our weather is “hotter than a rooster in a hen
    house!” Summer arrived with a bang. Feels like a Swedish sauna outside.
    As always, I enjoyed the cartoon. No problems
    with the solve, “pucker” was the only word I had to ponder.

  11. Easy solve here again today. My family too referred to the turkey’s tail the “Pope’s Nose”, not in any reference to a particular Pope. At the time all the Pope’s were Italian and usually had prominent noses. Beautiful day here in San Francisco today – in the 70’s. Happy Thursday everyone .

  14. Hi, all!! Easy words & puzzle again today. When I was 8 to 12 years old, my grandmother had about a dozen or more chickens with a huge coop and large chicken yard to peck in. It was my job to feed & water them and keep their feeder clean. I had Rhode Island Reds and White Leghorns.
    Leaving for an unexpected check-up for Jerry at the doctor’s in 15 minutes.
    Mike, loved your reply to me this morning 3 hours ago. Will answer as soon as I can, but tomorrow, daughter wants me at her house all day to play games & eat lunch. I am getting popular in my old age. lol

  20. You know me and Harry were talking about the Osso Bucco, and you make the bouquet garni to put in the pot? I do it with cheesecloth. So I’m thinking, you guys can grab some of those, load them with garlic. Put ’em around your necks, wear ’em out on the field. Can’t hurt..Ward off some of those evil spirits…The Astros may not be human. 😂 ⚾️👹
