PWENEH = NEPHEW

ASIROL = SAILOR

CARTOON ANSWER:

THE TIRED DOGS TURNED THE COUCH INTO A —

OFELSEPESAR = SLEEPER SOFA

Good Saturday morning everyone!  I hope the sun is shining bright and you’re enjoying a relaxing weekend so far.  The first three clue words were immediately visible, but SAILOR had me stumped for a couple of minutes.  Finding some blank space on the back of my newspaper, I wrote out the letters and finally figured it out on the 9th attempt.  Moving on to the cartoon, I attempted a blind solve but nothing came to mind.  Writing out the clue letters, the answer came instantly for a swift finish to an overall fun puzzle.  I’m still itching for that stumper of a game and it looks like we’ll have to wait until next week to get it.  Any guesses as to what the caricature is on the man’s shirt?  I’ll post a photo of it when the puzzle is published online later this morning.  Until then, please feel free to leave a comment with your best guess.  Enjoy your Saturday my friends and I’ll see you tomorrow for more Jumble fun!

  1. Hey Mike. I think it’s Berkeley Breathed’s Opus from Bloom County. He is the existentialist penquin, first mistaken as a German Shepard. 🙋🏻

    • Good morning, Mike, good morning Everyone. The only word that was a little RUFF, and gave me a slight PAWS was Sailor. I think it’s beCLAWS it’s the strangest looking anagram I’ve seen in a while. At first, from the dialogue I thought that Jeff MUTT have been steering us towards Seat as the four letter answer word. But no T, so no WHELP there. FURtunately, I thought Sofa, and then, Sleeper. LABracadabra!
Four dogs, huh? COLLIE! SomePAWdy help this guy out! I think I’d find it hard to BREED. And laying all over the FURniture? It’s just aPAWling! Today’s eye candy? There’s the T-shirt with Opus, (what’s 20)? maybe a shout out to the Penguins who are one game away from the Stanley Cup? The cereal bowl is cute. So are the dogs I guess. I’ll go with the cereal bowl, ’cause I think he’s eating CAIRN flakes! And most likely Standing up! And then there’s the woman…You know I’m tugging at that LEASH to say it….but I won’t, I’ll just LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE!!
Let’s be DOGmatic today. and stand up FUR what’s right! 🐶 🙋🏻

  2. The SAILOR’S NEPHEW OFTEN used an ALIAS when SLEEPing over on a girl’s SOFA.
Three clue words came quickly and easily. What slowed me down? Nephew, and I have 3 –plus 4 great nephews. Not sure why that combination of letters threw me. But they did.
I had “sofa” before “nephew” so the solution was no challenge, but another day with the pen.
Beautiful, sunny day up here ( that’s a geographical reference for Angela) and I am off to help run a “Spring Fest” at the hospital where I volunteer. And yes I’ve already applied one layer of sun block but hope to have a “glow” by the end of the day. Happy Saturday everyone.🌝☀️🌞

    • I had trouble understanding your note until I realized that “great-nephews” was one word and “great” wasn’t an adjective. For a minute, I thought maybe 3 of your nephews weren’t so great! 😄😄

    • Good afternoon, Earl. I think you’ll see from the comments below that I didn’t realize this was you this morning. And as I was reading it, I was thinking this person “sounds” an awful lot like Earl, and where’s up here”? Why’s he mentioning me? LOL…Nephew didn’t cause any PAWS for me…and I got 12! (You may have seen me mention that some have fallen from the fold and become Yankee fans. I forgive, but I can’t forget)! LOL. And, yes it’s beautiful here also, albeit a little too hot already. Almost at 90. You’re a volunteer! How wonderful! I admire that. I hope you have a great time at the Fest. I saw a few of them set up as I was coming home earlier. Tents up all over. I don’t think anyone anticipated this much heat today, though. Good move with the sunscreen…getting a glow here also, but between us….? Mine’s from the espresso martinis! Salud! 🍸Enjoy! 🌞🙋🏻

  3. I was in a making up word mood this morning I guess. For some reason I saw alias as “asail” as in the sailor set asail in his little boat. Alas it is not a word the real one of course being assail which has nothing nautical in its definition. At any rate the mistaken word still gave me an S and an L so I was still able to solve the puzzle. I too paused at nephew. Our Chronicle’s headlines this morning said “CAN’T WIN ‘ EM ALL” referring to our Warriors of course but to this Jumbler as well. Happy Saturday everyone.

  4. I’ve never heard of it referred to as a “sleeper sofa”, but after getting SOFA, it was the only thing that fit.
And that’s definitely the most successful, and my least favorite, character from Bloom County, Opus the Penguin.

    • Hey Steve, Still on the soccer field. 85 in the shade and the humidity’s rising. “Water break …” I forgot to bring my IV!! Halfway thru the last group. 🎶Bless the beasts and the Children….”🎶 This must be penance …🎶”For the good times….”🎶. WHELP!!!! 🌞⚽️😎 🙋🏻

      • Sounds (and feels) like summer is FINALLY here. It’s going to be a hot few days abd I couldn’t be happier. I might be able to finally wash and put my winter jacket away!

        • You’re gonna jinx your summer if you do that Mike, beware! “Flying in the face of God” a Titanic survivor called it!

        • Threw in the towel! 🌞 In the car with the AC waiting for the ride home. 23 yr old don’t show up..”It’s too hot”! Gimme a break. Good comeback last night. Went thru the most boring 3- 4 innings….and then Voila! Good win! ⚽️⚾️ 🙋🏻

            • Nice comeback. I figured you were doing the Live PD. Steve and I were scouting for you, during and after. We went to the basketball, I know, I know, fake news! And I go and fall out 3rd quarter! Ah..Home Sweeeeeet Home! Jumping in the shower..be back. 😎🙋🏻

          • Once during an unsupervised high school gym class baseball game, the team captain came over and announced “Game called on account of it’s too ******* hot!” and nobody disagreed with him!

I’m just a complainer today, but all this white is making me snowblind – it was easier to read before. I’ll live, though.

            • Yea, it’s a lot of white! Startling at first. Hard to find that happy medium. I thought it was too hot too, and I only had 4 hours sleep combined between falling out during the game and then again around 4. I saw your comment about Mikes post being up and checked out Opus at 2:30! 23 years old and doesn’t show up! He prob had his swim trunks on and was heading out in the other direction! Please! Got the IV hooked up…replenishing those lost electrolytes! Burgers are on…The redemption after the penance! 🍔🍻 🙋🏻

    • Steve, what do you call it? We don’t say sleeper sofa either. Opus, too? Kids, dogs, squirrels, and penguins? Risposo time…Catch you later. 😎🙋🏻

      • “Sofabed” I think. Remember awhile back when the Jumble cartoon showed a market selling soft drinks for “A dollar a pop”? It started a discussion about how it was called “soda” on the coasts, “pop” in the Midwest, and even “tonic” in some really strange place like, oh I don’t know, New Hampshire? 😉😂 (Actually, probably more like Boston).

      • Re: Bloom County, I just thought that characters like Milo, the guy in the wheelchair, and even the perrenially hung-over lawyer Steve Dallas were much more complex and interesting than the kind of one-note (to me) permanently befuddled Opus. There’s no accounting for taste. And one of my favorite recurring columns in “The Funny Times” is “Curmudgeon”.

        • Steve Dallas is my go to guy! You know I’m just breaking your shoes about Opus!

  5. Something obviously went wrong with the blog this morning in two ways, Mike and Angela –
    1) Our credentials are blank when leaving a comment, hence the ‘anonymous ‘ entries. Although I can tell you from your comments, Earl and Betty!
    2) This morning when I tried to reply to a post on yesterday’s thread, it said “posting comment” but the comment never showed up. I tried it three times. I just tried it again and now it worked and interestingly, my credentials still were automatically filled in there.

For anyone who doesn’t know, where it says “Fill in your details”, put your email address on the first line, and your name on the second line.

      • Thanks, Mike, that’s actually great news. Maybe you should put a banner at the beginning of today”s posts (and even the next few days) telling folks how to re-enter their website and name; it’s not specified how to do that under the reply/comments box. (just a suggestion). Thanks again.

    • Steve…LUCY…….”I’ve got some splainin’ to do”!!!! I saw your 3-4 comments this morning, but didn’t realize it was you! First the 🎶 one..I’m thinking..”Who’s jumping in my grave…”? Old Italian expression..When someone tries to steal your thunder or emulate you too closely. And then the Trump chastising , I’m like ..”WTF”??? You already know. I’m no Trump Chump! So, I just ignored it. Actually, I sent the Music one to Spam! I’m thinking who the h–l is this Anonymous Interloper….! And you never greet with just “Morning..” Anyway…if you didn’t just repeat it now as yourself, I’d never have bought it. And I’m glad to know it’s you. Jumping in on our Joni Mitchell…I was ready to call my backup! LOL…Almost home…can’t wait to get these sneakers off! ⚽️🙋🏻

      • I couldn’t even see those comments on rhe 6/9/17 thread when I posted them, so I’m glad you figured it out.
I guess we finally know 🎼Who wants yesterday’s comments 🎼— we do!

        • Ah, God bless this country, running water and all! LOL. Lefty, gotta tell ya, … It freaked me out a little. Like somebody peeking through your blinds! LOL…I got a tad unnerved…😳

          • That’s how I felt when the pop-up ads and redirects were happening – WHOA, somebody’s in here. Got to remember that here and everywhere on the Internet nothing’s private. This blog has, what, like 900 followers?
Great H. P. Lovecraft story called “The Haunter of the Dark” – the narrator is seeing strange and wonderful sights by staring into the “Shining Trapezohedron” when he realizes with a shock that something is staring back through it looking at him!

            • Like closer to 2500, no? HA..why you’ve never seen something staring back at you? LOL. Now I’m I just realizing it was Earl who gave me the shout out about the weather. After I read it, and saw my name I’m like…”Whoa…This guy is really…”jumping in Earl’s grave!” ROTFL!! 😱😱

              • No, people usually avert their eyes. 😳😮
I’m dropping out for awhile now that I’ve got everything fixed here 😂😂
Try to get Mike to cut back on the blinding white while I’m gone, though. Later.

              • Hey Coach! What’d ya (Sweeeet Brooklyn)! end up eating last night? The pizza, right? I had mozzarella carrozza to start. More cheese! Luigi 2 is doing onion rings as we speak…I shall toast you with the first one! I thought the Mets had it last night…I even thought maybe extra innings…Didn’t expect it to end like that…😞 🙋🏻

              • Sausage and ricotta pizza was my pick!!! Only watched the Sox and then Mariners games last night. Onion rings from scratch? Kudos if so because they’re a mess to make. Getting close to dinner time and I haven’t the faintest idea what to make or order. See you tonight if you’re around!

              • Hey. Just trying to go thru all Steves posts from last night. Busy bee! And planning to nod off! I felt it was the pizza! LOL No, not fresh. We were too hungry to wait! We’re doing shrimp in bacon, corn on the cob, and mixed vegs later, all on the barbie. Sound good? I’m not going back out. I’ll be here, we got the Belmont Stakes and the Mets on TV. What a great day, huh? 🎶”Summertime…summertime…”🎶 See you later! 🌞🙋🏻

              • I think I’ve put on 10 pounds just reading you and Mike talk about food!

              • Ha HA…Yea, but be honest..it’s good food, not goat or anything…🍝🙋🏻

              • Ha BAA! One of the local supermarkets here has an entire shelf in the meat section prominently labeled “GOAT”! Is that bad, I ask cluelessly (never had it).

              • “At least it’s not GOAT!” the nice lady said.
GOAT, PASHMINA, GET IT?????? DUH, Steve!

Well, I did say I was clueless!! How many hours did it take me to get that? 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

              • Not that there’s anything wrong with that!
And I know you mean that in the nicest possible way. Now just how possible that is, I don’t know. 😂😂
Excuse me, 🎼”They’re coming to take me away, HA HA, HO HO, HE HE” 🎼
🎼 “Stroll around the grounds until you feel at home.” 🎼 Where’s my straitjacket emoji?

              • Yep, nicest way possible! Anyway, who am I to talk crazy? Pot calling the kettle…😂

              • I should be in bed by now but I’m up watching the CIN/LAD game and saw an ad for Farmer Boy restaurant. That scarecrow is CREEPY AS H$LL!!!

              • I find the ads for the movie “Atomic Blond” pretty scary too!
I think we all need some sleep!

              • I’ll have to see if the ad is on youtube. Just the thing before I fall asleep!

              • Like you and Blakes pot pies in NH, I’ve never heard of this CA based place, and now I never want to! 🤡👹👺

              • You know boys….At least I was doing things constructive! Cleaning up, putting the food away, finishing the last of the sports pages…trying to get Mike’s description of Judge as a B-E-A-S-T out of my head. And you guys are playing who’s is scariest? What is it with you men? SMH! The stuff nightmares are made of! Thank God all I had was Judge’s image to put me to sleep. The BEAST! 😂😉🙋🏻

              • I found myself thinking, Hey the Mets scored 4 in the top of the ninth for a 6-1 lead… I hope that’s enough! 🙂

              • I’m sure they dont! And you missed the 2500 comment..Double , triple the numbers..people looking back…Fail? LOL. GO in peace. Come back with your shades on! 😎 Later 🙋🏻

              • I was going by the note up at the top that says “Join 830 other followers.” Does your 2500 count visits by people who haven’t necessarily signed up to follow? Not really sure of the terminology here, just curious.

              • I know. I replied before, somewhere. There were so many to go thru. If you can’t find it, I’ll post it again. My left thumb hurts today, really. 👍🏻🙋🏻

      • Ohhhh – “Jumping in my grave”, What a wonderful expression, and I’d never heard it! I’ll probably be able to use it before too long, too! 😂💀👻

        • Never? Ask Mike! And you grew up with Italian friends? I can say it in Italian, but I’d never be able to spell it. Italians go to it all the time. I had to say it to my cousin just the other night…bought the exact same Pashima as me…! ROTFL!! It covers a wide range…I’ll brush you up on it! 😂🙋🏻

  6. Steve, you’re right. I just realized that I was posted as “anonymous “. I’ve never had to fill in the details before but will try it now. Thanks, Betty

  7. Steve, thanks for commenting to me even though I am having a dry spell of thinking of anything worth writing. I am impressed by your Johnny-on-the-spot commenting to me & everyone with something clever, interesting, funny, or musical to say.
I checked out your Speed Bump comic yesterday and though the infant one was a little “ewww” but laughed & laughed at the one where the dinosaur kept accidentally writing Paleozoic Era on his checks instead of Mesozoic and the one with the swan & ugly, ratty looking, cigarette hanging out of his mouth bird who calmly explained to the beautiful swan, “Me, I was a GORGEOUS duckling.”
Yesterday’s Zits comic was great about the 3 guys leaving for a gig, no room for the drums, but rather than strapping their expensive drums on top of the van, they strapped one of the guys up there.
I have a sleeper sofa in my study with a queen-sized mattress in it that the grandkids chose to open up & sleep in when they stayed overnight when they were young, but now they are all grown up.
    Happy Saturday!!

    • Hi Lelia – Mike upgraded the site to get rid of ads, so for your name to show up instead of ‘anonymous’, below the reply box where it says ‘fill in your details’, type your email address in the first line, and your name in the second.
Yes, I loved the guys strapping “Pierce” to the roof. Priorities!!

I actually do have a musical note to pass along if you wish – From columnist Leah Garchik in the SF Chronicle:

” ‘I always tell the people in my band to communicate,’wrote the late Dan Hicks in his newly published memoir, “I Scare Myself.” ‘That’s what you want to do, that’s the idea. If you’re not communicating with the listener, then you may be playing too busy, or playing too many notes. And whether you’re playing or listening … you want to get inside of it. That’s part of the thing. You get inside it and you’re in there, and you’re listening to everything and you’re feeling it and it’s affecting you. That’s what you’re always shooting for.’
There’ll be a signing/celebration of the book’s publication, including a musical tribute, at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, on June 24 at 1:30 p.m.”

And by the way, I have always admired guitarists who can say more by NOT playing a note than others can by playing ten or a hundred. The Sound of Silence….can be golden, I guess.

  8. Hi Steve!! I tried 6 times to post the above comment and first it wouldn’t post and then it kept telling me I had already posted it. Now I’m sending this just to see if I get my name back. Lelia Ann Ohlund

    • Things are looking up now! Welcome back to your name Lelia!
Getting rid of the ads, and hopefully the pop-ups and re-directs, is definitely worth a little trouble! Yay, Mike!!
(It was probably a good idea to do this on a weekend also when there’s less traffic – isn’t there? – although I guess I’m doing my share to increase it!)

  9. Quite all right! I’m just happy to be back! Now I will write my Jumble solve for today.

  10. I thought I was doing something wrong this AM — glad to how it wasn’t me. I’ll try to put my name up, but I can live aononymity.

  11. Jumble solve for today. OFTEN & SAILOR, easy. Had to change “asail” to ALIAS, as usual. My favorite word was NEPHEW because I had no idea what it was. Writing the letters in a circle did nothing, so I used my favorite technique learned from Mike, self-jumbling. The second time I rewrote the letters, there was ne, ph, ew. Wow! Thanks, Mike. Last, I came up with ersleep sofa, then resleep sofa, and finally SLEEPER SOFA!! Done.
Bye, all! Off to do some usual Saturday chores…

  12. Angela! Check this out from the front page of http://www.jumble.com/ today 6/10/17!

    AWHT LDOUW
    UYO NIHKT FI I
    ANSG TUO FO
    UNTE LODUW
    YUO SNATD PU
    NAD LWKA
    OTU NO EM

No “Help!” needed from my friends to get by on this one!!

    • Hey Earl, A lot of all suffering from Identity Theft earlier today! How did the Fest go? Glowing? Hope you had a great day! 🌞🙋🏻

  13. Hey Mike..is this the norm now..late comeback? ⚾️ Go Sox! And what did those boys of mine do today? ❤️ Kept them to 2 runs? In 2 games,,,,???!! I see there’s LivePD “marathon” going on! What a day! ⚾️🏇🙋🏻

    • Haven’t watched much of the games today. We went out to dinner and then did some shopping. Been watching LivePD and checking the scores between commercials. Yankees really beat up on the O’s!!!! Holy moly!

      • 11! ⚾️ The Yankees punished the Orioles! Rout! What a day for baseball! 🙃⚾️

          • We got major wins. Hell of a lot of runs between us! Yea, came out so good. All of it. Good you guys went out. So much less work! I’m frying eggplant now, getting a head start on trow. Mets were over so early

            • Mmmmm sounds yummy. I grill mine and then mash it and add garlic, EVOO, and lemon juice and use it as a spread on toasted bread. Heaven. 😇

              • That sounds delicious. When I do it like that I add a dash of balsamic vinegar. But I have to have it on Italian bread, you know like bruschetta. Doing parm. But I’m going out trow morning to get the fresh mozzarella. I wish you could do the same. 😐

              • Get some rest. Supposed to be a scorcher here. Until Wednesday. I really don’t care for the 95+ days, unless like you there’s water. I got a headache from drinking in the sun. Wasn’t the best idea. Note to self!!! Do you need me to put up the words?

              • Plenty of water around here, lol! And the ocean is bone-chilling cold still. That’s why we decided to go to the water park instead. Post away tomorrow if you’d like! Thanks for the offer. 😉

              • Oh right you’re on the water. So it can never feel as hot as it does here. We fry! Water parks are total fun..you’ll have a great time. Ok, I’ll put the words up. Hardly anyone posts on Sunday. You won’t believe this..I hardly do..I’m thinking of getting a Judge jersey, or a T shirt at least! What happened to me??! LOL. He just amazes me! Too much alcohol and lack of sleep, huh? ROTFL. Have a great sleep. Enjoy trow. Catch on the flip. 🙋🏻

              • That kid is a B-E-A-S-T! Besides being an excellent hitter, he can run like a racehorse. BUT the shirt or a jersey is too much for a Mets fan, lol! I’m this close to calling you a traitor! 😂😂😂

              • How could he not run like that? He’s got so much leg! He redesigns the strike zone! And today, what #19? God bless that boy! He just gets to me! IDK..I swear I’m thinking about it! Scaring myself! ROTFL. (I can’t help eating the eggplant as I cook it…so weak)!

              • This was supposed to stay RE-defines the strike zone. Although, redesigns works too!

              • A serious question for tomorrow – Are you not on the water too? On Staten Island in the Atlantic Ocean in New York harbor? I’ve been meaning to ask you whether you can hear foghorns and ship traffic.
🎼 “Suzanne takes you down to her place by the river
You can hear the boats go by, you can spend the night forever” 🎼

              • I’m on an island, but I’m no where near the water. Mike lives waterfront, no? Big difference. I don’t hear foghorns where I am. 🎶🎶”And you know she’s half crazy but that’s why you want to be there”🎶…Apropos! And then, speaking of…I liked Judy Collins version of Chelsea very much, UNTIL Joni Mitchell’s. And I liked Neil Diamonds also. But then I like most anything he did. He’s no Billy Joel, but I like his music! I’m down for the count…Goodnight, Gracie. 💤😴 🙋🏻

              • Same with “Both Sides Now”. Joni’s version so much more emotional, but then she had sympathetic producers helping her record her vision, but Judy had to go with a pop producer looking for a bright, breezy commercial hit. Still love Judy’s voice and committment to the music, and I never would have heard those Leonard Cohen songs otherwise.

              • Good morning, Glory! How’s it going? You know a whole more than me about the background stuff. Hats off! 🙋🏻

              • I once saw Joni live jokingly introduce “Both Sides Now” as “Judy and my hit!”

              • Especially liked Neil Diamond’s early stuff – Solitary Man and Cherry Cherry. A good foundation for a career.

              • I don’t think he ever did anything I didn’t like…Brooklyn boy! My friends are going to see him I think it’s next week. I passed, cause I want them to take me to Billy Joel next month, and I need to keep a piece of my soul in reserve! LOL…🎶🙋🏻

              • I think so, a long time ago. The one about the rich kids in a shore town? I’d have to look it up to jog my memory. What’s the connection? Coffee..? Oh yes, 🎶Where everybody knows your name….”🎶…LOL. Enjoy! ☕️🙋🏻

              • Thanks, heading out now. ☕️☕️
The connection – in one of the later scenes, they’re on the beach. It’s so oppressively hot and humid they decide to go back up into the woods, and it’s even *worse* because there’s no breeze.

Meanwhile *my* temperature was being raised by Barbara Hershey. 😉

I know from humidity. I remember being able to fold a potato chip in half without it even breaking, and being sweat-stuck to a vinyl covered chair.

              • LOL. Barbara had that effect on a lot of men! She prob still does. Seagull, tho? Uh, hit so much. LOL…☕️🙋🏻

              • Let’s see — going over to Google — yup, pretty much same effect. (Using google to ogle? 🙂).
Her and Valerie Perrine – loss for words except hommina, hommina, hommina, hommina.

              • LOL…See, this is what happens when you boys stay up too late making comparisons! 😂😂😂

              • You know what gets to me the most….My hair takes on a whole ‘nother life! It precedes me into a room! LOL…🙅🏻

  14. How freaky that I spammed Steve this morning. The emails upset me, and then the notifications came to me in like an orange color! Asking for approval. If it wasn’t so early I was going to email you. I had to get ready to leave for soccer, so I just let it go. But I couldn’t get it out of my head. Creepy feeling. Are you happy with format now? And even in jest, you didn’t jinx anything. I think just too much traffic.

    • I hope it didn’t cause too much of a headache. I emailed support to ask them to fix the comments section and the reply should come in 24-48 hours. Surprisingly they call themselves the happiness engineers but I think that’s anything but the case having to wait that long!!!

  15. Annnnd… Here comes comment #100 for the day:

Angela – my local paper had printing problems and produced the equivalent of your “Enjoy the nothing!” In the sports digest column, where the headline should be it says “Headline goes here and goes”, and just below that where the smaller sub-headline should be, it says “Summary hed goes here and goes and goes and goes.”

My brain did a spinout when I first read those. 😮😀
