Good Tuesday morning everyone!  The first three clue words came instantly today, with DOLLAR coming into view on second glance.  Moving along to the cartoon, I read the sentence and dialogue and attempted a blind solve but wasn’t able to figure it out.  Writing out the letters, I noticed “J” was first in the layout and JOB came to mind instantly.  THE and AND were both available for the other 3-letter word, but THE seemed like the logical choice.  LANDED was a quick solve with the remaining letters for the finish and another fun Jumble puzzle was complete!  

Jeff’s cartoon featured three men, and two of them appeared to be pilots.  If you’re new to the game, you probably would have just finished the puzzle and moved on to the crossword or another part of the newspaper.  Diehard fans of the game know that Mr. Knurek does quite a bit of research for his pieces and this one is a great example.  The two pilots are actually named Jack Wadell and Brien Wygle, and there first flight in the prototype Boeing 747-121 took off from Paine Field in Everett, Washington on February 9, 1969 at 11:34 am.  During the test flight, they experienced minor problems with the wing flaps and decided to cut the flight short.  The plane was named City of Everett after the factory where it was built and is on display at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington.

  1. Good morning, Mike, good morning Everyone. Literally FLEW through this puzzle, PLANE and simple. It was a RUN-a-WAY solve. Top to bottom: With the J-D-E from Judge, and the H-B-T from Habit, knew it was The Job. Just had to bring it in for the LAND(ing)ED. Glanced at the last two words, saw an L, that’s all that was needed. The puzzle was way too easy, too constricted…A BOEING Constrictor! The pilots saying, “We won’t let you down”, was cute; funny and a big hint at the same time. But I was looking for more. Usually I’d look for the story behind the cartoon, but for some reason I can’t CONNECT to this puzzle today. As a punster, I had a hard time finding good material with this. I’m sure I’m missing something, but I don’t want to CARRY ON any further, I’m just (A)BOARD!
    I don’t know, today’s puzzles just didn’t get off the ground for me.

      • You say that now…But if you were on that flight…? See that, if I’d of done the research, I could have squeezed that into my post. (I’d of…? Brooklyn speak, huh)? Happy to give you a little LIFT with it! ….Hmm, now the puns are coming to me?? Maybe writing posts at 5:30 in the morning isn’t such a good idea? Maybe I should SCHEDULE it a little later? (I see that hand going up….)! Tonight, Yankees -Reds! OMG…🎶”Start shelling the nuts…I’m eating today..”🎶…You got the tune, right? ⚾️🙋🏻

          • It’s miserable here. Heavy rain and chilly. 52 when I woke up, the heat kicked on. You know those Yankee fans are chomping at the bit to get this meet started…a cancellation will prolong the agony! LOL..We’ll have to see as the day goes on. But just to be safe…keep those nuts handy. NUTtin like being caught RED handed! (And the arm goes up….)! 💆🏻

            • We’re 2 GB them so I’m hoping it does happen. The weather here calls for the rain to leave in the evening so we’ll see! 🤞🏻

  3. Wow! Great history lesson about today’s cartoon, thanks. I thought perhaps the cartoon/puzzle might make reference to D-Day, the 6th of June.
    Question about the format for the past two days: the background is almost black rather than gray. Not a big deal but I preferred the gray.
    No problem with clue words but had to write the clue letters down and even then got hung up on wanting one word to be JET before I finally landed on JOB– tough one for me so my sentence is not very inspiring:
    The JUDGE had a HABIT of BUNDLING his 100 DOLLAR fines with a stern lecture on ” landing a job.”

    • Hi Earl. I was thinking D-Day today also. I went through my paper, cover to cover and couldn’t find even the tiniest bit of an article. I know in years past there’d always be some mention of it. I guess it’s not news “worthy” anymore. Not too many of those brave men left. 73 years ago..that’s a long time. But I always think about how Freedom isn’t free, and some things should never be forgotten. Anyway, oddly, I never thought “jet” today, “job” popped into my head as soon as I read”you’ve been chosen”. I found the puzzle..uninspiring. And I usually can get on the band wagon with most anything! Your sentence? Creative as always! Hope you’re enjoying your day, despite all the rain. 🙋🏻

    • Earl and Angela – My thoughts exactly on D-Day, although I guess it shows we’re getting (or in my case have gotten) old. The only reference I’ve seen so far was on the comic page – Classic Peanuts with Snoopy in GI helmet swimming ashore amid the barricades.

          You gave me a great laugh by calling *yourself* out on “I’d of..”!
          I read it, and my mind’s ear went ‘CLUNK’. First thought: “That *must* be Brooklyn.” Second thought: “I don’t own a flame-proof suit — MUST .. BITE.. TONGUE.!”

  4. No problem with the clue words today though like Earl, I was looking for something with jet. Couldn’t find a three letter word that fit in the middle so switched to job and voila the rest fell into place. Thanks, Mike for the background information about the flight – very interesting.

  5. For some reason HABIT threw me off, today. I had to back into it after solving the puzzle. The rest of the words were pretty easy.

    Hate to tell you, Mike, but I am still getting pop ups when scrolling through the comments. It doesn’t seem to be any sort of clickable link that I can see. A new window simply launches.

    • I’ve been reading up on the premium upgrade and it says it disables users from seeing “ads”on the blog and there’s no mention of pop-ups whatsoever. Maybe I’ll take up some of the folks who offered to donate so this issue can be put to rest. I’m so sorry it’s happening, John. 🙁

  6. Hi Mike et al, the highlight of doing the Jumble today Mike, was your blog with all the info and your speaking like a pilot at the end. Great job. (as usual) Had to self jumble BUNDLE a few times but got the cartoon answer immediately.
    Earl, enjoyed your sentence as usual.
    Wishing all of you better weather. It’s going to be cozy warm in Phoenix and both daughters are taking me to lunch today, but I would not let them tell me where. I’ll tell you the surprise when I find out.

    • Good morning, Lelia! I’m glad you didn’t have much difficulty with the puzzle today, and it’s always a pleasure hearing that you enjoy my posts. This rain is really something and I broke down and started the pellet stove to take the dampness and chill out of the house. I marked it on my “milestones” calendar as well because I still can’t believe it’s June 6th and we need heat! Enjoy your lunch with your precious daughters and I hope it’s a memorable one. After your talk of the Olive Garden last week, I went on Saturday afternoon and thought of you. Oh, and I did get those extra olives on my salad. 😉

      • Mike, it made me smile when you said that you thought of me at the Olive Garden because when my daughter took me again, I though of you asking for extra olives and told her about it. She said that Josh asks for extra olives on his Subway sandwich. And that’s all I care to say about olives today. Lol Wish I could send you some of our warm, dry weather. See you tomorrow.

      Hey, tell Josh’s dad that I suggested that, although Josh is an innocent 17-year old now, by next year when he’s a grizzled jaded old veteran of the music business, he can sing his fellow Arizonan Alice Cooper’s hit “I’m 18.”
      Here’s another musical tidbit speaking of the group Boston – their debut album was a huge hit, but they took so long recording their second, it became a running joke. Finally, their manager threatened to just re-release the first album and re-title it “Boston’s Greatest Hits”.

      • Steve, Josh & his dad are now doing what they call Home Concerts. This week they performed in a private home with Josh singing original & cover songs with a contract for $300, which is way more than they used to make, but there were 2 graduates there and each dad insisted on paying the $300 so they made $600. I saw a picture of a T-shirt with the word MUSICIAN on the front followed by this definition: Someone who packs $5,000 worth of gear into a car and drives 100 miles to make $50. At first they didn’t even make that, but it looks like their passion & dedication are finally beginning to pay off.
        I think or made it up that you told someone not too long ago that you had a relative (grandfather?) who played an instrument in the horn family and he told stories of music history. I love horns and your talented & informative relative probably didn’t realize what a rich & firm foundation he was laying in you for your future appreciation of and knowledge of music. Lucky you, and thanks to him.

        • Thanks for the info about Josh and his father. Yes, my cool grandfather played clarinet and all types of sax, could play anything by ear and read music too, played in the Army band in WWI, and explained why Glenn Miller was so revolutionary at the time. I think he did have some idea about my musical appreciation, because what I hadn’t told Angela is that he also bought me my first guitar. (It was obvious he was never going to appreciate Elvis, the Beatles, or the Stones, though).
          Besides that, he was the Internet Joke Repository before the internet existed. One of his bandleaders used to win money by betting people they couldn’t tell him a joke he didn’t know the punch line to. Another thing my mother and I inherited from him, I think. (I also got his earlobes and bald head.)
          Advice from my grandmother, though – “NEVER MARRY A MUSICIAN!” Because they’re always away performing on the nights and holidays that other people get to enjoy with their wives.

        • I love your definition of musician, too! My professional musical career consisted of one paying gig for which I got $10, and I think I had paid $5 to rent a bass guitar.

  7. Mike, loved swapping snorkeling stories with you yesterday. I thought about giant sea turtles the rest of the day & how amazing it is that you got to swim with them. A funny thing I didn’t tell was that while Jerry was feeding Grape Nuts to the fish, a little bit larger fish with teeth didn’t want to wait for Jerry to shake the cereal out of his plastic bag, swam up close, & bit his finger. The funny part was Jerry jerking his hands back and trying to yell “ouch!” under water through a snorkel tube. Lots of bubbles

    • That’s a hilarious story, Lelia, and I can just imagine how frightening it was at the time though. My son is obsessed with water and snorkeling (and he’s a Pisces!!!) and living at the water he’s taken an interest in scuba. We’ve searched out all of the local shops but they won’t let him in deep water until he’s 10 as his lungs need to develop fully. They did let him in the shallows with a mask and tank for “practice” and he can’t wait to get just a little older. I have no problem waiting though as you could probably imagine.

Betty, after the lovely things you said about my grandson, Josh, when he didn’t prevail on The Voice and your commenting that you thought Josh was far superior to the winner, I have been forgetting every day to say CONGRATULATIONS to you and your precious grandson Ryan on his 8th grade graduation. I don’t know how it is in other families, but I made a much bigger deal of our daughters’ 8th grade graduations than HS or the U. CONGRATULATONS, RYAN, ON YOUR GRADUATION!! Many people are very proud of you!!
    Betty, the latest with Josh is that he and his dad are performing home concerts, singing original songs & cover songs while they plan a short tour after they finish making his second CD.

  9. Steve, thanks for telling me about The Elderberries and Red & Rover. Neither of those is in our paper, but I’m reading them online. I had to Google the word Michelin to find out that Red had rated their home a prestigious, sought after Three Star Michelin Restaurant because of how well he fed Rover. That was cute. Maybe if Jerry took me out more I would have known what a Michelin rating is and then you could really say, “Watta guy!” lol

    • Glad you like the comics. People seem to love Red and Rover because it’s so sweet. By reading online, I discovered that it began when Rover saved Red’s life by knocking him over to keep him from stepping off the curb into the path of an oncoming truck, and Red took him home to keep.

  10. Hi, Steve! Thanks for refreshing my memory about your cool grandfather and the musical influence he had on you. I LOVE to hear someone play the Sax well. I also loved hearing about his penchant for jokes. I love jokes but now have forgotten a lot of the punch lines, which I have learned the hard way to recall before I begin the joke. LOL Did you promise me a joke yesterday? I have a science question for you, but not today.
    You spoke of Alice Cooper. Both of our daughters attended the same High School that Alice Cooper went to, Cortez High School in northwest Phoenix. It usually makes the paper when he visits his hometown. Speaking of the newspaper: when Josh was interviewed by a reporter, he said that his first experience with making money singing was when his dad took him to a street corner in Tempe, the home of ASU, and had told him to bring a container for money. Josh said he grabbed his Easter basket and that night made his first dollar when someone dropped it into his Easter Basket.
    And now I have a choice of going to lunch in my pajamas or getting dressed before daughters get here. LOL See you tomorrow.

  11. Steve, speaking of eating and regarding your menu items: love ‘em, keep ‘em comin’ because with gravy or with sauce, with or without lug nuts & oil, I am buying. I might not be eating but I’m buying because they keep me laughing and I love to laugh, loud & long & clear. I love to laugh, it’s getting worse every year. The more I laugh, the more I’m filled with glee; the more the glee, the more I’m a merrier me.

  12. Mike I play golf most mornings now. When I used to do my puzzles with my coffee, I now get to the golf course around 7:00, then lunch , then nap and do puzzles late. Now that I have figured how to do it I will try to make A.M. comments. looks like it is turning in to a real chat page. Angela must drink Red Bull and coffee eh? She sure is extra smart with the puns! Where I think of possibly one she comes up with 15. Would that make he a punsterette?

    Thank you for your greeting to my Ryan. I only have one grandchild so he’s the apple of my eye and nothing but pure joy in my life. I do make a great fuss over him and especially on such happy occasions as birthdays and graduations. When he was born someone gave me a book of thoughts on being a grandparent. My favorite entry was the one that said “If I knew being a grandparent was so much fun, I would have done it first.” So happy to hear about Josh’s new ventures. I just love the Musician T-Shirt you mentioned. It’s hysterical. I wish him much success.
