  1. Good morning, Mike, good morning, Everyone. Easy, breezy. And we got DOUBLE as a word, and valiant in the dialogue! NET bad for a Saturday morning! Earl, notice both older men have paunches, like MOONBALLS, while the young man’s stomach is so FLAT? This is all Jeff’s FAULT, it had nothing to do with the farmers! LOL. Today’s the Preakness, The Run for The Black-Eyed Susans. Sue, TOSS at least a DEUCE on your favorite horse, you may get a Sweeeeeeeet RETURN! Hoping we all have a great day, and get to SCORE some POINTS, whatever our GAME may be. I’m off to soccer at TENNIS-h.

    • Re: TENNISH – When Victor Borge created “Inflationary Language” (where all numbers in sentences were incremented by one to account for inflation), the phrase “Anytwo for elevenness” replaced “Anyone for tennis”.

      • ๐ŸŽถ”And the Bentley driving guru is putting up his price…Anyone for tennis, wouldn’t that be nice”? ๐ŸŽถ. The Victor Borge thing? What’s a 412??!! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

        • “What’s a 412?” I thought it was “overacting”, but I guess it’s a 413 by now.
You got me on the song quote, but I’ll let it ferment in the back of my brain and see if it pops up later. That’s actually fun to do.

          • LOL…And here I thought you were baiting me! Think Cream…or Eric Clapton. ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Hmmmm. Cream or Clapton, so not Hotel California. Then I thought maybe “Pressed Rat and Warthog”, but not that either …. still fermenting.
I have a good Hotel California observation that I’ll post on today’s site this afternoon, since it’s completely off topic (Us? Off-topic? !!)

        • Steve. It’s hard getting the 2 days straight. I got emails flying amok. I gotta run for a few hours. I’m still mulling over Vaughn Monroe. Gotta look it up. Be back later. I’m so so tired! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

          • Beatles, White Album. (I’m So Tired). Time for a nap, see ya later, enjoy the nothing!

            • ๐ŸŽถ …My mind is on the blink.. I wonder should I get up and fix myself a drink…No, no, no..I’m so tired .๐ŸŽถ
One of the few of theirs I never liked. White album or not.

  2. And we got VISOR too! This puzzle’s defiiNETly HEAVY on the hints today! ๐ŸŽพ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  3. Aced this one and had no double faults . Love it when I can clear the net without a pen even with the racket of a coffee bar. I’ m flattered that my “paunches” remark was memorable and yes I did notice them today but was determined not to say anything. Being an “old” tennis player. served me well today

    • Your remarks on farmers were even more memorable to me. My wife always notes that one of her economics teachers asked his classes something to the effect of “Who are the only people who produce something out of basically nothing”, therefore the basis of the entire economy, and the answer was, of course, farmers.

      • The Giants maybe, on a really good night? โšพ๏ธ ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

        • Or even the A’s last night, after giving it all away first (Sorry, Mike and Sox fans).

          • Below the belt. Mike’s suffering enough- 2 nights in a row. (And smart move not to mention the Mets….). ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

          • Tough losses especially last night with Sale on the mound. That catch by JBJ was INCREDIBLE though it didn’t matter in the end…

            • Indeed, incredible catch. Thought they were going to make the crowd wait 18 innings for the post-game fireworks.

              • Wait up..You want to talk incredible? What about Jose Re-YES? 7th inning, bases loaded, only 1 out…Pinch hitter, pop-up flare to shallow center…he runs, he connects, he jiggles, he snow cones for the out!!!! DeGrom thinking….”I’ll name my first born son Jose”!!! INCREDIBLE!! Tell the truth..,me or Keith Hernandez? โšพ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

            • So many near misses, …so many tissues…so many peanuts….๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • At least you’re still young enough to put quotation marks around the ‘old’! I’ve had to dispence with that. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Hey Earl -we never forget a good “paunch”-line around here!

      • Lefty…THIS is a really good one! PUN..WORTHY! Under the wire,, it may be the best of the day! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

        • Took most of the day to realize it. See, never *quick* wit. This forum format is perfect.

        • Another Seinfeld reference? And all the more appropriate with Keith Hernandez in the broadcast booth?

          • Lol…Good catch. That episode was funny as he–! Puddy…LOL… Is it Hernandez with A-ROID in the booth? Turned the sound off.. Are you watching this game? Mets playing good ball tonight..offensively and defensively, no? .. Did you watch the race? I wonder how Sue did…

            • You’ll like this – I mis-read your post and thought you said there was an ANDROID in the booth, and that you were referring to Hernandez.
Did see the race, watching Ducks/Preds on, yes, tape-delay.
I read a guy online before the race who said the best bet would be to box Classic and Cloud in top with Dreaming picked to finish fourth or worse. I assume he made a bundle!

              • LOL, Literally. He is an android. I liked him so much more before he started announcing. He’s good to look at…too bad he speaks! LOL. Never looked at Cloud. My Always Dreaming? On the way home before, I saw him going into the homestretch. Yea, really, on the 440…๐Ÿ˜‚

          • No, Steve, it’s not Keith. It’s that red headed guy, Joe something, I think. ๐ŸŽถ another run scored…๐ŸŽถ I got the tune, but I can’t place it. What’s it from?

  4. Good morning. It’s always a fun puzzle when you get the solution. The words were easy with visor taking an extra ten seconds. All the other words jumped right out. Now the cartoon didn’t give me any hints but in writing down the letters the first word and second words were evident. Being an old military man the last word had to follow. Looking back, those years were some good times. Leave out the wars and it’s not a bad life. Three square meals——what more can a guy ask for. Seeing other countries is a plus and you learn so much. Rather have a military man work for me than a civilian any day. It teachers leadership chain of command. That’s enough I starting to think like Angelia. Only good thought intended. Till tomorrow stay well.

    • Hi Paul, good morning. I’m running to Soccer, but I enjoyed your post and I’d like to reply when I get back. And thank you Sir, for your service.. Enjoy the nothing! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Ah,but it’s off to bocce later. Funny but a lot of the guys are ex-military. Nice conversations about Italy Germany France and other countries State-side wasn’t bad either. You go girl with soccer. I’ll stick with the old mans and ladies game.

        • Paul, Good afternoon. One can never go wrong with Bocce! And it IS a sport that lends itself to having the time for good conversation. But you’re wrong in calling it a game for “old”er folks…it might be a slower game, but it calls for precision and concentration…and a few glasses of red wine never hurt either! It’s a grand sport! Today’s puzzle? I think the cartoon gave a mighty hint…the word “Valiant”. Which a lot of military men don’t think of themselves as. I’m not sure when you served, but when I think of valor, I first think of Tom Brokaw’s, “The Greatest Generation”, and it says it all. I’ve read it 3 times, and cried each time. My hat’s off to you, and the men like you. We owe you all a debt of gratitude. Hope you had a great game! ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • “Enjoy the nothing”! LOL! I’m dyin’ here! I’ll remember that one; it’s positively Zen-like!

      • Angela – The last straw that sent me completely around the bend was the cheery wave from the emoji calling ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ”Enjoy the nothing” ๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ
Perhaps I should say, “Thanks for nothing, Angela!”

I *often* enjoy the nothing! As the comic strip character Zippy once said, “Boring isn’t boring!”

        • Hey, hey, hey…Once again, it was that pesky Auto (in)correct! And I did add the disclaimer… So, now ๐ŸŽถ”Thanks for the memories” ๐ŸŽถ is playing in my head, it doesn’t take much..And, once again…again…I somehow get the feeling around the bend may already be familiar territory! You’re not pinning this on me..! ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

          • I can’t remember ever literally having tears of laughter rolling down my cheeks, but that one did it. It was hard to see to finish the post! Since you disavow responsibility, hats off to Auto (in)correct!
            Aaaand… Bob Hope, Four Tops.

            • You’re too funny I’m glad I could make you laugh! Yes, the immortal Bob Hope, 4Tops. You do know why I went to that song, right? The Paunch line took all day? Nah, you’re being modest. Maybe it was just another one of those “fermenting thoughts in the back of your brain”. Must be a ‘lotta room back there, huh? Kind of like a condo..? ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

              • Not a condo – more like the ship’s bilge we were discussing.
Oh! Because Drabble calls his wife “Honeybunch”- Duh!

              • LOL..Yep. .I keep telling you, you ‘gotta get up pretty early in the morning to keep up with me! LOL..๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ Time difference, age difference, indifference…Don’t make no difference…..๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚.

    • I love the “leave out the wars” note! A story I heard recently was about a British intelligence official who was very proud of the fact that it had been his job for over 40 years to, every morning, inform the Prime Minister that a World War had not started that morning, and he had only been wrong twice!

      • Agreed about bocce – spent many an evening during high school playing on my friend Vito Moreno’s backyard court.

      • But Steve…Who tells you these stories? Inquiring minds want to know. Today they have meds to take care of things like this!!!! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  5. ๐ŸŽพ Good morning, Mr Welker! WOW! Have you hit it out of the park! (Oh, wrong sport! I LOVE my Baseball)! Ok…WOW! Have you “FOLLOWED THROUGH”! Steve was right when he said you’d give me a “run for my money”! (Oh, wrong sport again…I love my Horse Racing)! LOL…Terrific post, major Kudos! As for the paunch reference, of course I remembered. It’s been a bone of contention for me for a while now. Middle age doesn’t necessarily bring “paunches” ..(not that’s there’s anything wrong with that)!.LOL…Maybe we can convince Jeff to tone it down a bit…or should I say tone it up a bit?? I replied to your post about the Vertigo/cat mix-up, but because it was part of yday’s puzzle, it’s on the bottom of yday’s page. I hope you saw it. And I see you’re an EARLy bird, like me! Enjoy your coffee, enjoy your day! โ˜•๏ธ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

    • Quick solve today; visor took extra minute. I will be pulling for Aways Dreaming to win Preakness but won’t be surprised if Classic Empire takes the crown. Probaby good to box two or three horses. I’m off to the grocery, etc. Have a glorious day! ๐Ÿ‡๐ŸŒž

      • Ah….”Always Dreaming…” Kind of says it all! That’s my heart horse…but yep, a lot of buzz with Classic Empire. I’m going with the boxes too, despite my friends telling me I “play” with the card too much. To which I answer…”This is why it’s called “Playing the Horses”, and not “Putting all your eggs in one basket…”. (To which they usually say…”We’re leaving you home!!!! LOL)… After this, I live for the Belmont Stakes, which is referred to as the “Final Jewel”, but to most New Yorkers…”The Run for the Exits”!!! LOL
I wish you good racing, and Good Luck! Hope you have a winning day! ๐Ÿ‡ ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

        • You’re in rare FORM today, Angela. Love “run for the exits”, or maybe run for the line for the restroom.

          • Lefty, I’M in rare form today? You must have eaten some of those organic strawberries! To think it’s only 9:30 there! This could be a verrrrry long day! ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ“๐Ÿ˜‚

            • “Only 9:30”? Says the woman who posts paragraphs and multiple responses by 6 AM EDT?

              • Yes, but you forget, there’s the time difference…oh I meant to say the age difference!…๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚ (โค๏ธ) I really have to stop, because we have the Preakness Party and I need to save some of this for later!!!! But, you keep feeding me these lines!!! ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

              • It is definitely the age difference too ๐Ÿ™‚
But I’m not forgetting the time difference; that’s why I said EDT. Your long post this morning with so many good puns was around 5:30 AM EDT, was it not? I rest my case — and my head now, I’m outta here.

              • Ah, yes it was. And SHIRLEY you must know I’m pulling your leg. (Mike taught me this)!!! I’m going to take a nap too…See you at the races! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

          • Oh, and…No, No, No..the restrooms at Belmont???? Definitely a horse of a different color situation…๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

      • Hey Sue, How’d you make out with the race? For a minute there, I figured my whole kitchen remodel was paid for! LOL.. Classic Empire and Always Dreaming…right to the front? My heart was beating so loud it drowned out the crowd! LOL.. Like what, 3/4 miles? …But then the turn? Always Dreaming….of a White Christmas! …gone. Cloud Computing? Like a ๐ŸŽถBat Outa Hell๐ŸŽถ….A real upset, right? That turn…took a turn for the worst! Exciting, though. Hope you did better than me! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  6. As a person who spent way over 20 yrs as a military spouse, I know a lot about being proud to serve. Good puzzle today (which means I finished it). Have a great weekend.

    • Hi Rita. I’m sure you do. And sadly, the spouses, who serve just as well, and sacrifice so much, are too easily overlooked. Woman to woman, I salute you too! And I’m glad you finished the puzzle! Have a great day! ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  7. I’m surprised they didn’t save this for Memorial Day. Maybe something even better up their sleeves.

  8. HELLO …TO THAT ONE “SPECIAL” OTHER PERSON !!! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  9. HI Mike et al. Read the cartoon sentence first & wrote โ€œto serveโ€ immediately while toying with the word โ€œeagerโ€ in my mind until I saw PERKY and knew the first word was โ€œproud.โ€ All clue words came easily today.
My 28 yr. old grandson, Jeremy, was playing bass guitar in a rock band in his early 20โ€™s, but changed his mind, married his girlfriend, joined the Army, and left for basic training. After more training in Texas, his wife joined him for 2 years in Germany. His mother & 3 sisters visited him there and were thrilled that they also got to visit Paris & Rome. Jerry & I prefer to sleep in our own beds in this huge, beautiful house he built after retiring, so rather than go with them, we financed the trip for the youngest sister which all of them appreciated.
Now Jeremy & wife live in Colorado. Jeremy is a combat medic and an EMT, going for paramedic. His wife is an RN in the base hospital, going for Nurse Practitioner. We are very proud of both of them.

    • Hi, Lelia. Great post! You’ve much to be proud of with your family., it’s reflected in your writings. The can-could, will-would..nothing to fret over. If that’s how you remembered it, that’s all that counts. You described it beautifully! Hope you’ and yours are enjoying your evening. ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  10. Steve, when I click a link, all my computer does is return to screen saver, but yesterday I Googled โ€œThe Elderberries comic todayโ€ and there it was. Jerry agreed that the shoe fit: The subtitles of salt & pepper are lost on Jerry. Thanks for yet another smile.

    • Glad you both liked it! Loved your story. Ask Josh about the links when he next comes by.

  11. Retraction issued here: Yesterday I said that we ate in a restaurant at Mt. Rushmore where one CAN see the faces through a glass wall, but that was so many years ago, the restaurant might not be there any more so I should have said where one COULD see the faces. Did I need to say that or am I just trying to join the talk from yesterday about being old? Donโ€™t answer that. lol

    • ๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถOooooooooooo, Sugar pie, Honeybunch….I can’t help myself..๐ŸŽถ๐ŸŽถ ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

  12. Steve, you should have said Mike, Angela, & Lelia because I sooo related to the Drabble comic today having about 4 shelves of my DVD cabinet full of VHS tapes that I canโ€™t part with. One is of Jerry, daughter Joyce, and me whale watching in a big whale watching boat off Cape Cod. Joyce asked me to have it transferred to a DVD, which I did, and it wasnโ€™t too horribly expensive and she said it turned out well with decent clarity. I need to get more of them done. And thatโ€™s not all. I still have a storage box of 8 track tapes. One is of the Osmonds singing One Bad Apple, which our little girls & I sang a million times in the cab of our truck all the way to Houston & back. I also certainly remember typewriter ribbons but donโ€™t have any.

    • I certainly will include you from now on! We were talking because I confessed to still time-shifting my watching of hockey games using 2 VCR’s. I’ll do you one better, and one worse. I never did buy any 8-tracks, but I have a pretty good collection of cassettes and reel-to-reel tapes, mostly home-recorded copies of record albums. I even have a couple of commercialy produced reel-to-reels — Peter, Paul and Mary, for one.
And if you really want to go back, I think I still have about 5 wax cylinders I bought at a garage sale, but have never had any way to play them.

  13. Jeez, Mike! I had no idea the Red Sox sucked so badly!
Of course I’m kidding, but only because I suspect that’s what you’re feeling too. I could sense the exasperation in your typing after the first inning of the series opener last Thursday. Oh well, there’s always tomorrow, but there’s no chance of a rainout to save them.

    • 2nd shot below the belt…Have you no mercy? Please, please don’t mention the Mets…the bases are sloppy with Mets as we speak…

      • Another run scored…bases still full of Mets..only thing ruining this is A-ROID in the booth…Jeez. Turned off the audio..ill do my own play by play…and ANOTHER run scored….

        • ๐ŸŽตAnd another run scored, and another run scored……๐ŸŽต

          • UH OH…What’s happening? Did you mention the Mets…? Angels amok…The Preakness all over again ….Foiled again! ๐Ÿ˜ต

      • We feel your pain, Mike. After all, I’m still watching a last-place team, and Angela’s watching the Mets.

      • WE??? Oh no, there’s no WE here. I’m compassionate, and totally sympathetic. And see, he mentions the Mets, and the bases are loaded with Angels…It’s like a West Coast curse…

        • HA…Did you hear the..PHEW? You read my mind! I’m telling myself…”Deep breaths…it’s ok..”! LOL ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿค—

          • West Coast curse is broken! There’s hope for the Sox tomorrow.
I’m going to take a break to concentrate on the hockey game – half-way through the 2nd.

            • Just breaking ’em, don’t believe in curses, anyway! LOL. As soon as the dryer stops I’m throwing in the towel too. Boy, , that’s an oxymoron for ya! LOL. Enjoy the rest of the game and the night. Goodnight, Gracie. ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

          • It’s that internal clock thing. Throws you out of whack, I’m trying to finish one too, due back Monday. I think you said once you don’t pay any late fees? We pay 25ยข a day. I could renew it, but I’d rather just finish it off.

              • We get 3, unless it’s a new book than 2. And same thing to renew…This is why I never get why people end up owing money., Why not just renew. weird. Need that guy from Seinfeld…what was his name? Mr Book or something…LOL.

              • Me too. Larry David’ s a comic genius. So droll….We had a “funeral” for the show when it went off the air. But I was disappointed in the last episode. Anti climatic I guess

              • I watch Veep on HBO with Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Great show! I’m so bored tonight that I contemplated making deviled eggs. Kinda weird, I know…

              • I didn’t watch it from the beginning, so I’m still trying to catch up. She’s amazing. Her facial expressions alone make me laugh. Her timing is impeccable, right? Deviled eggs? LOL. And you thought I was weird with bacon and eggs? At least I didn’t have to cook them! LOL. I was just munching on M & M’s and crushed walnuts. And then I wonder why I don’t sleep!!!

              • Funny thing is that I’m not hungry but just looking for something to do. Maybe I’ll get up early and make them. Hope my paper comes tomorrow — no delivery twice this week.

              • Know exactly what you mean. LOL. You put the chicken parm in my head the other night and I made it yday. I’m always cooking early on the morning. It relaxes me. I’d really miss my paper of it didn’t come. Habit. Oh do you get the puzzle on line?

              • You made chix parm and didn’t invite me, LOL!!! It’s one of my favorite things to make as well as eat. I’m pretty hand in the kitchen and do all the cooking. Thought about cancelling my subscription but I like to support the Jumble gentlemen for their efforts.

              • LOL. Same here. So easy to do. I can make it on my sleep. I gathered from your comments that you’re the chef. But don’t you enjoy reading sports from the paper? It’s not the same to me on line. It’s gotta be the whole experience I feel.

              • I prefer having a physical copy but I can do without. Funny thing is I really like the smell of the newspaper for some reason. Just like old comic books. They smell incredible!

              • No, I need it for sports. Comic books I’ll give you, but the paper not so much. It used to smell better years ago, but now I think cheaper paper and ink changed it.

              • Well my nightcap of Nytol coupled with the heated blanket are doing me in. See you tomorrow! Good luck with the laundry. ๐Ÿ˜Š

              • LOL. Mediocre minds…think alike! Good night! ๐Ÿ’ค๐Ÿ’ค๐Ÿ’ค๐Ÿ’ค

              • Mike, the dryers playing my song! Hate to leave you being bored, but I’m up so many hours. Trow. Hope you get some sleep

              • Not a walnut guy. I love peanuts (as you know!!!) and pistachios. I guess I just enjoy cracking the shells. The best is warming peanuts in the microwave for a few seconds. Wish I knew where I could find a nut warmer… Ebay probably.

              • ROTFL. We should call you Cinderella! You’re def a different man after the witching hour! Yea, you look that up on EBay. Let me know how that works out for you! HA. I can’t do pistachios unless they’re shelled, because of my nails. And peanuts not a big fan. Unless they’re chocolate covered. Seeing a theme here? LOL

              • I get silly when I stay up late, but it’s all in good fun. Definitely not a prude by any means. Now I’m looking up nut warmers on ebay. Thanks Angela! It would fit nicely in the corner of my media room. ๐Ÿ˜

          • Yea, I have that effect on people! Hard keeping the mouth in check with the brain…! LOL. I realized I didn’t explain it right. The card? NOT tipping my hand! LOL. I just thought you might know of them because they’ have places in Boston. Then I realized, you’re not in Boston. Check them out tho, they’re amazing. Katy Perrys on SNL.lookling like a female impersonator. W – hy. T – he. F -ace….?

              • I never watched. I know they’re not funny now! I just need to wait for the dryer to stop. Should have never started it all so late. Did it cool off by you? We dropped 30 degrees today.

              • Very cool but pleasant today. Cold enough this evening with the sea breeze that I put the heated blanket on. Mmmmm….. toasty warm……..

              • Same here, cool. But we had some on and off rain. Tonight I closed all the windows. Toasty warm..you’re shot! LOL. I went to ..”crazy town banana pants twice today”. Tough crowd…Maybe it wasn’t in the right context! HA..

              • One of my favorite sayings! Usually gets ’em every time. I was busy all day so I didn’t get to see too many comments. ๐Ÿ™

              • I was ROTFL, but it didn’t fly when I tried it! LOL..Maybe the wrong crowd. NYers are so jaded, you know! LOL ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

              • Hey Mike (and Angela), sleeping with the sea breezes, this one’s for you from a fellow New Englander:
“Whither he has gone, I do not know; but I have gone home to the pure New England lanes up which fragrant sea-winds sweep at evening.”
                H. P. Lovecraft, “He”.
Also ๐ŸŽตRock me on the water
Sister will you soothe my fevered brow
                Rock me on the water
I’ll get down to the sea somehow ๐ŸŽต
                – Jackson Browne

              • Hey. This is what I got out of it …๐ŸŽถ So I’m just ‘gon sit on the Dock of the bay , watchin the tide roll away…,๐ŸŽถ And then I segued into ๐ŸŽถThe summer wind came blowin in from across the sea ๐ŸŽถ. ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿป

              • Nice nod to me near the dock of the SF bay, after mine to you on the Seaboard!
And The Master — or is that Bobby Darin? ๐Ÿ™‚
