CARTOON ANSWER:   HE ASKED HER TO MARRY HIM, AND SHE SAID “YES”.         THEN HE:

AOSDROPSTTEPAO:  PROPOSED A TOAST

Mike, This one’s for you: 🍾

Good morning, Everyone.   🍎 Happy National Apple Pie Day: 🍎                                    Mike has the morning off,  I’m here to welcome you to the weekend.

Our words today are as easy as pie, the one exception maybe being PAYOFF. Those two-in-one words can sometimes be tricky, and I blinked once or twice before I saw the word. Very good scramble. Letters at the ready, on to the cartoon! Not sure if it was intentional, but Jeff has taken some poetic license here, and given us a poem within the dialogue! “Life…wife!” How cute is that? I’m reading it and thinking back to English 101 and iambic pentameter comes to mind. Iambic pentameter! It’s a word game, it’s a cartoon…it’s 6 o’clock on a Saturday morning…get over it! The cartoon: We have a man, Raised glass in hand, A ring we see…Ah, there’s the key!  (Yes, yes, I know. Sorry, I just couldn’t resist)!  It’s a PROPOSAL!…And we see he’s making a toast…And there you have it! PROPOSED A TOAST!  How cute is THAT? The couple, along with the waiter are raising champagne flutes.  The other diners, (which OF COURSE includes the requisite blonde woman dressed in purple – Seriously,  what’s up with this?),  seem to be joining in with a wine and perhaps a scotch on the rocks? Smiling faces all around! Really good graphic, exceptional dialogue. Kudos! Cheers! Congratulations!  I think today, Jeff has shown us that..To some, marriage is just a WORD…To others….it’s a SENTENCE!

Wishing Everyone a wonderful day, and to those of us here in the Northeast, I hope you’re 🎶”Singin’ In The Rain…🎶  ☔️ 💦🙋🏻

  1. Yay!, I was able to do everything without writing anything down–achieved one goal for he day. Now if I could only make the sunshine here in gloomy Western NY , I’d really be happy

    • Good morning, Earl. Great going! Really cute puzzle. I don’t think we’ll see any sunshine today. Rain started here on Staten Island around 2 AM, and hasn’t stopped since. And the forecasts are saying..,🎶”We ain’t seen nothing yet” 🎶 Just one of those days! Be well! 🙋🏻

      • Hi Angela – now you’ve really got me puzzled. I looked up “ain’t seen nothing yet” and found Bachmann Turned Overdrive which I then rememberd ans assume you meant – but that’s not what I was thinking of. Not Sam and Dave’s “Soul Man” either. What I’m hearing is an early-mid 60’s garage/psych band singing the phrase, but I can remember the rest yet or find it. Research continues…….

      • Ok, mystery solved. It’s the Blues Magoos “We ain’t GOT Nothin’ Yet”.

  2. Good morning. Another fun puzzle. “It’s always fun when you get it. ” The words were easy for me. Just a slight pause on (you guessed it) payoff. When I got to the cartoon I was stuck so I put the paper down and had my second cup of coffee. When I picked it back up the answer appeared in less than thirty seconds. You are so right Angela,if we really study the cartoon and it’s words the answer is within. You and Mike gave us a good tip. Thanks again. Until tomorrow stay well.

    • Good morning, Paul. Yes, if any word is the stickler today, I think it’s Payoff. I always felt that the cartoon and it’s wording are the only way to go if you’re stuck. And Jeff’s clues are getting better all the time. Thanks for the acknowledgement, but there’s a lot to be said for that second cup of coffee! LOL. I wish you well also. Enjoy your day! ☕️ 🙋🏻

  3. Even without getting the word payoff, I got the puzzle with no problem, Was expecting a Mother’s Day puzzle, the crossword made up for it.

    • Hi Rita, good morning. The ‘payoff ‘ was in the puzzle! And, there’s always t’row. Maybe Jeff will surprise us all.
      Have a great day! 📝 🙋🏻

  4. Good morning/Afternoon all. Actually, I saw PAYOFF but had to pause on AROSE. At first I thought ROSEA might be a word, like a red rash or something.
Last I heard from Mike, he was watching the Reds/Giants game, it was tied in the 14th at 1:42 AM EDT, and he said he had to see how it turned out. The Giants ended up winning on a Buster Posey walkoff homer in the bottom of the 17th at 3:43 AM EDT. If he really did have to see how it ended, you may have to do tomorrow’s write-up too, Angela.

    • Hi De Ho! You were thinking rosacea. Close, but no cigar! Mike? I know. Almost a double-header! Not sure how long he lasted, but he knew he didn’t need to get up early…so who knows? He was on a high, cut his teeth on that Music Trivia question…! LOL. Gotta love Buster, just the name alone..Buster Posey! I love it! Giants really are like the Mets…winning the crazy-a– games. So, you were right the first time. I was going for BTO. I erred in putting the quotes before We, instead of after. B-b-b-baby….very cool lyrics! For the record, I don’t know what a garage/psych band is, and I’m happy to remain so. Not up my (Tin Pan) alley! How’s that for a music pun?! I threw another good one in on a comment. Left out the 🎼though. Only 3 people wrote in, so you should catch it easy. And no one seemed to get my joke. A friend actually said this as part of his wedding vows…straight faced and so sincere…we all died!!!! I laugh till this day picturing it. Up for the challenge? 🙋🏻

      • Nope, I got nuttin’. Don’t see a music pun or anything that could be said at a wedding (unless you mean marriage being a sentence). Clue me in!

      • Steve, read my reply to Paul…5 word phrase, sans the music quotes. And the joke? Nothin’? Ok..scene: Theyre at the altar. Bride finishes her vows. Groom goes on about “only you…years to come…growing old, forever”etc. Then he pauses , and says.”Linda, to some marriage is just a word….but to me, (DRAMATIC PAUSE), it’s a sentence…”! With a slight shake of his head, and the inflection on sentence….The priest sputtered first. He’s a friend! we all grew up together. And then, ROTFL!! The church erupted. I don’t know, like I said, I still crack up when I think about it. 😀🙋🏻

        • I don’t know, I’m laughing now…East coast humor? Maybe you had to be there! It was all in the inflection, I guess! And we all knew he’d say something like that, because his build up was too strong. He’s one of our resident jokesters. Are you familiar with the Algonquin Round Table? Well, there’s 4 of us, and we think we’re them! We hang out three times a week, and constantly try to one up each other. Out pun each other. We’re tough, never mean. But you get a run for your money…And you better bring your A game! Anyway, he rode that one for a good while.. We bought him drinks for a week! LOL… Caught the lyrics yet? If I give you a hint I know you’ll get it. Want the hint? 😀🙋🏻

          • I gave you a hint – ” I have to admit”. And just to even it up, ” I think I understand” is also a ref. to a different song and artist.

          • The Algonquin Round Table? No wonder your morning summaries are witty, quick and sharp — you practice this stuff!

            • Het Lefty, Well, obviously WE’RE not, but you get the gist. And it’s not practicing, more like an outlet for all the wit I have stored up! LOL…Watching the Penquins? I have no horse in this race anymore, but I’ll prob root for them. Still raining here…and it’s only 45 degrees. Miserable day…☔️☔️🙋🏻

              • I’m going to start the game around 6 PDT on tape delay.
Why does it always seem to save up the rain for the weekend? Stay warm and dry!

              • Ok by me. Those poor guys in Canada are certainly overdue for a Cup Final appearance or victory.

        • That went right over my head….completely! Yes, you’re right, the Beatles ” Getting Better”. But, the other.? I need another hint 🙍🏻

          • Hey Angela, Leila, — Mike got my Dan Hicks reference last night, Leila got my Joni Mitchell just now — do you know what this means? We got song ID competition – right here in River City!! Game on!

            • HA….”You got trouble, my friend….I say trouble, right here in River City..”!!! 🎺🎺🙋🏻

          • Hey Angela – Paul once said that one of the things he admired about John was when Paul would sing a straightforward lyric like “I’ve got to admit it’s getting better” only to hear John chime in, “Cahn’t Get No Worse”.

            • They did have different accents, Paul’s always seemed a little more cultured. My comment before about rooting for the Penquins,…taking it back. Disgusted reading about Iannetta. The Pirates are out of control, have been for years. You ‘wanna brush back, brush back, this was so unprofessional. So that’s it, Pittsburgh’s out of my wheelhouse! ( How many points do I earn for that..one )?!! LOL.. 😀🙋🏻

            • I know, right? Trombones!…🎷🎷 🎼. “Right here in River City”! 🎷🎷 Speaking of River City, you’re unnerving Lelia with your music trivia prowess! We can’t play this game., we just enjoy the music, you’re far too advanced for us! And as for Mike,…Baby steps, baby steps! LOL. 😀🙋🏻

              • I don’t know; I wouldn’t underestimate either of you with some of the things you’ve come up with.

              • Oh, nothing to do with underestimation! You know you should never underestimate a woman! LOL….It’s all good, but you know, 🎼”Girls just ‘wanna have fun….”🎼!!,! 😀🙋🏻

      • Angela – I found this interesting so I’m just passing it along:
        https://www.thoughtco.com/garage-rocks-biggest-hits-2521884
I used to read the author, Robert Fontenot of New Orleans, all the time at the turn of the last century because he had an expert Beatles column online at ‘Ask Jeeves’ which became ‘Ask.com”:
“His original About.com Beatles site was a fixture on the internet from 1997-2001. “

        • Hey Steve. Thank you. Weird hearing “turn of the century”, right? That makes one feel old! So this is garage band music? But what’s the psych part? Need to read the whole thing through. I had no idea. I’m feeling so tired. My friends just left a few minutes ago. They watched the Penquins, I watched the Mets. Losing house! LOL. I’m subbing for Mike again t’row. I doubt it’ll be at 6 AM! I don’t think many people check in on Sunday anyway

          • I could have said “Turn of the last millennium”! But I’m old, you’re not, remember?
Psych = Psychedelic, strangely enough, not always contradictory with garage (!).
            Strange times, some great music.

            • LOL. I just said it sounded strange! Anyway, I have trouble saying millennium! Psych? I know what it means, I don’t get where it fits into the music. The few songs I glanced at didn’t seem to fit the genre. Like I said, I have to read the whole thing. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing! Need sleep. Got to sign off. Goodnight, Gracie. 💤💤🙋🏻

  5. Hi Mike et al! You did a great job, as usual, Angela. As you said, the cartoon gave us the answer word PROPOSED, so I used it to back into that elusive word PAYOFF. Finally found the little black ring case next to her black dress.
    Enjoy your Saturday! See ya’.

    • Hi Lelia, Thank you. I wanted to include the picture, but I messed it up last time, and I was too tired to read through the instructions! Hope you have a great day! 💍. 🙋🏻

  6. Steve, didn’t check back in last evening after chopping, so missed your funny-stuff about a rock band named Fried Bicycle Tire, etc. but I enjoyed it just now. Very witty and fun to read.

    • I was hoping you would see that. Our comments would not have been possible without great writeup to work from. Have a great day.

    • You got it. I used it to tell Angela that I thought I understood her hint! 🙂

    • You got that obscure reference so quickly, I feel like I should come up with something for Sisotowbell Lane, and ask you (if you think this is fun, no grades or pressure) 1) What was unusual about the printing of the title of her first album, 2) What was the connection with Crosby and Stills, and 3) Who was the album dedicated to?

  7. Goldilocks puzzle. Golf has returned to Indiana…also planted tomatoes today….and started cukes. Have been eating green onions for 2 weeks

  8. Hey Harry, How’s it going? Nothing like vegs from our own garden, rignt? I’m only doing tomatoes and basil this year. That’s a meal in itself to me! ( As long as there’s a piece of Italian bread)! The scallions?…I love the aroma, I love the taste. It’s still raining here, 17-18 hours. Glad you got your golf game in…”Hello, ball!” Have a good night! 🏌🙋🏻

  9. Steve, I do not think it is fun. I felt like a cheater for Googling your words & seeing Joni Mitchell pop up, whereas Angela has most of your songs in her head. You & Angela go back & forth so quickly that I can’t keep up, and I plan never to do that again. I don’t have a clue as to the answer of your 3-part question but hope that Angela or you choose to answer it for me. Thanks.

    • Lelia, Hi, how are you and Jerry doing? I think Steves’s on his own with this one! He does come up with some amazing tidbits; but I’m all about the music. He enjoys the background minutiae, and he’s learned; but as you said, I have the songs in my head…God knows, there’s no room left for all the details! And, between us, I have no clue what he’s referring to either! LOL..But I’ll give him the A for effort! Hope you’re having a great day! 😀🙋🏻.

    • I understand – I was just impressed that you got an obscure song so fast! And all your other Queen and other references. Details later. 🙂

    • Ok, I got a minute:
      1) She painted the album cover herself, and the title ‘Song to a Seagull ” was spelled out in flying seagulls – even the record company missed seeing it.
      2) David Crosby produced the album; Stephen Stills played on it.
      3) Dedicated “To Mr. Kratzmann, who taught me to love words.” That was surely true for the rest of her career.

      • And you have the patience to type this all up! I give you A + for effort! LOL…😀🙋🏻

        • Taking typing in high school as an elective turned out to be one of the most unexpectedly valuable things I’ve ever done. Who knew?

          • LOL…You’re too funny! Who knew, indeed! I just know my thumbs hurt, and my nails always get in the way! Here’s one for you…”Charlie, they took my thumb….”! (Not music related…) As usual, every time I think my thumbs hurt, I think of this! LOL…🙋🏻

      • The Pope of Greenwich Village was a good movie. Wasn’t one of the guys Paulie. His buddy or the one that lost his thumb.

  10. Hi Paul. Yes, cousins. Paulie and Charlie. I think he really said……” Charlie, they took my TUMMMM”…I think it was a good movie also. 😀🙋🏻

  11. Mets get tanked, while Keith Hernandez is talking nonsense from 1982! You can’t make this s— up! In my opinion, we started off the season with the best rotation, and now we got the worst ERA. And we’re what, .450-.455? Jeez. Being a Mets fan takes a lot of heart. Too bad it’s always a 💔 broken one. Goodnight, Sports fans! ⚾️ 😢
