CARTOON ANSWER:

GEORGE V RULED BRITAIN FROM 1910 UNTIL HE LEFT FOR THIS IN 1936 —

CINODMGOMKE = KINGDOM COME

Good morning everyone and happy Friday!  Did anyone else think that clue words were amazing this week?  Looking back through the blog, my favorites in no particular order were CAVIAR, TROPHY, SYMBOL, BEYOND, SYRUPY and ACCENT.  After today’s puzzle, I would add CINCH and MODEM to the list and there are enough words there for one heck of a JUMBLE!  No problems with any of the anagrams this morning and I was at the cartoon in seconds.  I didn’t even read the sentence and dialogue after I wrote out the clue letters as I saw KING right away and the rest fell into place for the finish.  Have a wonderful Friday and an early Happy Mother’s Day to all the mom’s out there.  See you bright and early Monday morning!  πŸ€΄πŸΌ

  1. Good morning, Mike, good morning Everyone. The words were instant solves, as was the answer; hinted at so strongly by the puzzles theme of the King, the funeral and the given words “In Heaven”. The answer phrase itself is said daily in The Lord’s Prayer. Good words, good graphics, good dialogue. But, brief grief. Nothing CRYPTic here.
    Wishing everyone a great day.
Word is tomorrow here in the Northeast, the REIGNs come. πŸ‘‘ πŸ™‹πŸ»

  2. Jeez, GMA. Emeril’s Breakfast in Bed. Gets me every time. 😒😒 Too early for this.

      • Ha. Good morning Mike. GMA picks a woman each Mothers Day to surprise and honor. The bed part is figurative. As soon as I see Emeril I start crying! πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • 🎢Good morning Starshine🎢 Before my time, but my Grandmother spoke about it well into her 80’s. If any of us acted out of sorts, she’d always go to…”What a you think, you Queen for the day”?!!! ( The, not A, and in her endearing broken English). And she was so impressed with the women getting washing machines! LOL. Go figure! (And we already covered the Queen thing)! Last night was sports withdrawal, right? Nothin’. πŸ™‹πŸ»

        • Good afternoon, Angela! (“Starshine”, Oliver). Actually I watched the Oilers/Ducks on tape last night; didn’t care that I knew the outcome.
“Before my time” – OUCH! But I figured that and I’m used to it by now.
My father was an insurance salesman and used to visit his clients in their homes monthly. Our neighborhood was so Italian, one of the women had a parakeet that spoke broken English. He would sit on the perch in his cage and say “Wanna-out, wanna-out”.

          • Yea, we knew a lot of “birds in cages saying, “Wanna out”. They were referred to as ‘being away at college’. I remember thinking,”Wow, we know soooo many educated people”! LOL…’Before my time’shouldn’t warrant an OUCH, just means I can’t bandy witticisms unless I look it up. Swear. And the Queen thing? I knew that you KNEW that I knew! Its all good and it’s classic! Ducks. Such a LAME (oh that’s a good one, right), name for a pro team. πŸ˜‰πŸ™‹πŸ»

            • “Ducks” is only silghtly less LAME than “Mighty Ducks”, but Disney paid for it. And that is not as lame as the NBC announcing crew who did refer to them as the Mighty Ducks even though they dropped the Mighty in 2005!
“Away at college” eh? I think I know what you mean, but let’s drop that right here.

              • Mighty Ducks….please. All lame ducks. But Disney doesn’t own them anymore does it? Or is it, do they? I’m Slipping! No, you’re right about the “away at college”…They weren’t any of my family, so it’s ok. Just neighborhood guys you heard about. But as a kid, it was odd to decipher. I guess they said it out of respect to their families, IDK. So with all this today, now I have to cook seafood tonight, and I got 🎢Lookin” for love”.🎢 playing in my head….Better than the Justin Beiber I got assaulted with y’day! LOL….

      • Yes, we covered the Queen thing. By the way, I only meant to chide you for trying to quietly sneak the TV reference by me, not the content of the reference. If I threw *that* stone, my glass house woukd explode in a billion pieces!

  3. Had to write the letters out again today, but being an Anglophile, enjoyed today’s puzzle. Thanks for the historical connections–do Dave. and Jeff do this very often?

    • Good morning, Earl! It happens once in a while and it’s always a treat. I envy your Anglophile skills. Whenever I watch Jeopardy, they are the questions I consistently get incorrect. Oh and the music ones as well. πŸ˜•

      • We’re here to help Mike! Just 🎡 “Reach out…reach out for” us 🎡.

        • “🎢I’ll be There.🎢 Four Tops…Great one. πŸ™‹πŸ»

  4. Hey, Harry. How’re you doing? Had a little shake up there in the Kingdom back then when Big Brother decided to marry “that American woman”. πŸ’‚πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ™‹πŸ»

    • That twice divorced woman. My imagination just goes wild wondering what talent she had for him to give all that up. I have yet to meet a woman with that much talent! Darn.

      • Harry. Harry. Harry. How did I know? LOL. Some random factors here; 1) “The woman I love”. When he said that, THAT was the shot heard ’round the world’. 2) Some how I think your imagination could strike fear into the hearts of mortal man, (and woman), , 3) He was never really suited for the throne, 4) As Johnny Lee so eloquently put it, maybe you’re just🎢 “Lookin’ for love in all the wrong places’🎢 And lastly, you CAN’T IMAGINE the holes I’ve bitten into my tongue in response to your post! This being a family blog and all! πŸ˜‰ πŸ™‹πŸ»

  5. Good morning. Enjoyed it today. Took a little time to get kosher. The whole puzzle took 45 minutes. I wouldn’t give up though and finally got it. Angela was right about the hint being in the puzzle. Should have picked that up. Until tomorrow stay well.

  6. Hi Everyone. Just a quick pause at KOSHER, then no idea about the answer. I thought the last word might be HOME, so I crossed those letters out and, even though it was wrong, KINGDOM jumped out of the remaining ones.
My little plastic handheld Jumble game has been spitting out killer words like HIATUS. I’ll have to make a list of them; I think it’s trying to embarass me.

  7. I too paused at Kosher but once I got that one the cartoon answer fell into place. Where did you get your little plastic handheld Jumble game, Steve? I’ve got the Jumble app and Jumble Books but no little game.

    • Hi Betty – I don’ t even remember; I think it must have been a birthday present. It says 2006 on the back.
BUT!! It’s still for sale on Amazon! One left at the first link, more at the second link. Thanks for asking – I just hadn’t thought of looking until now. I have seen a couple of other types, but they were unplayable. This one, I’ve become re-addicted to.

  8. Hi, Mike! Hi, fellow commenters! Today’s solve was a CINCH from MODEM to KOSHER with no GLOOMY feelings. Got β€œkingdom” quickly as George was a king, just like yesterday’s word β€œroosts” gave me its synonym β€œperches.” I agree, Mike; another good Jumble week.
My daughter took me out for a Mother’s Day lunch on Wednesday. On our way home we saw a place called Bush’s Chicken and are going there today to check it out.
    Enjoy your day!

    • What a sweet daughter you have, Lelia! Bush’s Chicken sounds interesting. Is it a BBQ joint? Enjoy your Friday and have a wonderful weekend. 😊

    • “The fast-food restaurant, which serves dishes such as gizzard and fried chicken liver β€” to each his own, right? β€” has plans for 12 locations in Arizona by 2021. It currently has about 80 locations in Texas.”
Bon Appetit, Lelia! (Better you than me!). 😝😝

    • We had lunch at Bush’s Chicken yesterday — pretty much like Church’s except they have chicken livers which my friend loves…also fried okra.

  9. Thanks, Mike, for saying they must be doing something right. Based on Steve’s comments I would be changing our plans to Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Black Angus or some other tried-and-true, but I think I will go ahead and be a guinea pig with Bush’s Chicken and let you know what it was & how it was. We just got a quick glimpse at the place as we drove by. Having been born & raised in Arkansas, right next door to Texas, I will probably like the food. We’ll see. But one thing for sure, Mike; I’ll bet they don’t have a chicken pot pie that we like as much as the one at KFC.

    • Yes, please do let us know how it is! I FINALLY tried a Red Lobster while in Florida and I enjoyed it. It wasn’t anything like the seafood restaurants along our coast (NH/MA/ME) but it was a good meal overall.

      • Mike, I know exactly what you are talking about. When I visited my dad every summer in Houston, he took me south to Galveston where we had a seafood dinner on the coast. The food was DELICIOUS!!! Nothing in Phoenix compares.

      • Mike, this one’s for you — close enough to NH (Before your time, Angela):
🎡 If you’re fond of sand dunes and salty air
Quaint little villages here and there
(You’re sure)You’re sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod
(Cape Cod, that old Cape Cod)
If you like the taste of a lobster stew
Served by a window with an ocean view
(You’re sure)You’re sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod
Winding roads that seem to beckon you
Miles of green beneath a sky of blue
Church bells chimin’ on a Sunday morn
Remind you of the town where you were born
If you spend an evening you’ll want to stay
Watching the moonlight on Cape Cod Bay
You’re sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod. 🎡

        • Steve, Old Cape Cod? 🎢 “I got that song right here…”🎢 Literally. Patti Page, and I think even a Nat King Cole? Maybe a Sinatra, too, I don’t know, I’m afraid to go there! I put Sinatra in everything…HA. . Classic recording. I’ve got them all. And if it’s before my time, you think Mike’s going to know it? You’re going to traumatize this poor guy. And I just finished chastising him with lost citizenship for using Red Lobster and New England seafood in the same sentence! HA! And I thank you, because now I got Cape Cod playing in my head…it’s such a peaceful song, right? πŸŽΆπŸ™‹πŸ»

    • Just as long as they don’t also have guinea pig on the menu! (Oh my gosh, between this and Angela’s pashmina stew, I seem to be ruining everyone’s appetite around here. SORRY. I’ll stop now. We await your review with baited breath (and breath mints.))

      • NO MAS with the goat stew. Conjures up the worst images. I know youre not So Cal, but 15-25 Grear Whites were spotted along your coast y’day. Forget the pigs and the goats…you guys got way more serious issues to worry about! Let Lelia enjoy her meal! Right about now, the Italians would be giving you the horns! (Did I reference that right? So Cal)? πŸ™‹πŸ»

        • Yo, Angela – see Rita’s comment below – Must…not…comment…on…food! Maybe I’ll just comment on buildings instead. (That’s pretty obscure.. thoughts?) (I know, violating my Prime Directive).

          • Steve, I think the comments are out of order, but I saw Rita’s about the chicken liver and okra. Is that it? I’ve eaten okra many times down south. If it’s cooked right, it’s good. The liver, I’ll pass. Food talk is contagious. And it’s good talk! Did you see about Familia? The Daily News headlined it as..”The Clot Thickens”. ‘Gimme a break. Somebody should tell them it’s Sports writing, not Creative Writing 101. The Mets get no respect. Now they’re saying he’s out for months. Months? That’s the season! You won’t believe the rest of the back page..when I get back later I’ll tell you. Got lucky, I don’t have to cook, going to Brooklyn… Sheepshead Bay for the seafood! Then prob watch the Mets lose to Milwaukee. ⚾️ I can’t believe I’m saying that… Catch you later. πŸ™‹πŸ»

            • Gotta love the Daily News and Post headlines, I say. Mets and Giants in a race to the bottom this year. At least Familia didn’t give himself a clot by crashing a dirt bike, eh?

              • Steve, The Mets with 2nd and 3rd and nobody out? Top of the 9th? Scored a run…? Should I dare imagine? Oh 1 out. Oh 2 runs scored….

              • Ok, so here’s the rest of the headlines…”WANTED EXORCIST: Have you ever removed a curse before? D0 you have Theo Epstein’s phone number? If so, call Mr Met for immediate employment”! And this is “NY’s Hometown Newspaper”. Yellow Journalism at its best….I don’t think we’re as bad as the Giants, what’d you guys at like .330? So depressing. Oh, we just lost…Jeez 😒

              • Oh, No! Jeez, can it get any worse? (Don’t answer that!) πŸ˜ͺ

              • Cruel. Just cruel. Uh oh, Jimmy Kimmel repeating the show where he told about his son. I’m crying all over again. Steve, the sharks off the coast. What’s up with that? Is that any where best you?

              • Don’t know about that specifically, but they are common. The SJ Sharks are named due to the “Red Triangle” off San Francisco and Monterry where Great Whites often gather.

              • Meant near you…15-25 sharks are common? Really? So wait, you didn’t see that on your news, but we had it here?

              • Just didn’t look that closely on the news. That was In Orange County, near LA, 400 miles south of here, but Great Whites are common here offshore.

              • I need to get a map. I feel like Harry when I talked “boros” to him. How odd tho that the news here at 6am is covering sharks in CA, and it’s no news to you. I guess like you said it’s common out there.

  10. Steve, you’re a prince letting me know about the hand held Jumble game and even including the link to Amazon.com. I ordered it post haste. By the way wasn’t it Tab Hunter that did the recording of Old Cape Cod?

    • That is so cool you ordered one!! A true Jumble addict. Happy to help, that makes my day! Just don’t overdo it at first; working the buttons functions as a hand-strengthening device while it also gives your brain a workout.
Don’t know about Tab Hunter; the original was by Patti Page in 1957, and he’s not mentioned here:

  11. Mike, Steve, Angela: The huge dinner rolls at the aforementioned place were delicious. The fried chicken was not quite done and underneath the crust was a layer of soft, slimy, fatty skin. The meat of the chicken had an unusual/unappetizing look and taste. We tried the smallest order of fried livers & gizzards which I grew up loving in Arkansas, but these gizzards had the texture & taste of a fried slice of bicycle tire. The mashed potatoes might have been good but it was very cold in there & many ceiling fans were going full blast; therefore, it took less than a minute for your food to become stone cold. The fried okra, which I love when it is cooked correctly, did not have enough corn meal on it and was not fried until crispy. My daughter said her green beans were good so I tried one but they tasted odd to me. Their country gravy, which they are so proud of for dipping your chicken, livers, & gizzards into, was cold & tasteless. All the waiters were extremely nice, polite, and helpful so we left without leaving a complaint, but neither of us wishes to ever go there again. Oops. Before posting, I just read your comment, Rita. I’m with your friend in loving fried liver & okra, but they should transport a Texas or Arkansas cook out here. They fry the livers & gizzards together, and every good cook knows that gizzards have to cook way longer than liver. The longer you cook liver, the tougher it gets. My husband would consider this whole paragraph moot because he hates liver & gizzards, but I raised our children to love fried chicken livers and okra.

    • Thanks for letting us know, Lelia. Despite my joking, I’m truly sorry it was so disappointing. Preparation is everything, I guess. I love steamed asparagus, but I tried some of that white asparagus in a jar and found it vile.

    • Love the “fried bicycle tire”. See, tell Jerry that if ever a meal called out to be smothered in pepper before you ate it, this is it! Sounds like you couldn’t possibly make it much worse.

    • Lelia, if any awards are being given out tonight, the one for Best Descriptive Effort would go to you hands down! So sorry it turned out so badly. It sounds horrible. πŸ˜’πŸ™‹πŸ»

      • Completely agree. Come to think of if, as Dave Barry would say, ” ‘Fried Bicycle Tire’ would be an EXCELLENT name for a rock group”!

          • Debuting on the Phoenix charts today, we have the new single, “Lick my Gizzards ” by the new band “Fried Bicycle Tire”, coming in at number 9 with a pullet!

            • This is where OUCH is warranted. I’ll give you the “pullet” one. That ones good! No more bad food talk. Too late, too full…too much imagery

  12. Steve, I am still laughing at your comment, after I said Jerry took me out for my Mother’s Day lunch, about him taking me out once a year, whatta guy! The whole family thought that was funny. Also, I enjoyed what you wrote this week starting with X-Tree so I typed up an Academy Award thing with you winning for the funniest comment but I’ll just tell you the gist of it. After I said…envelope, please…I said that the winner was MySlob who runs like Jim Thorpe and attends Comic Con dressed as the new imaginary, existing only in your clever brain, Marvel comic snake-man, Pythor. I just thought all of that was funny & clever of you to think up. P.S.: Guinea pig was not on the menu, but I think they had a 5-ton refrigeration unit going in that aforementioned place.

    • Thank you Leila – That is extremely flattering, but now we are waiting for Angela to post ” DON’T ENCOURAGE HIM!!!” πŸ™‚

    • With my luck, Meryl Streep will open the envelope and announce that Angela’s the winner!

      • Thank you, thank you….First, I’d like to tkank Mike, for believing in me….πŸ† πŸ™‹πŸ»

  13. Steve, again, just toooo funny! Jerry just decided that he wants tuna salad for dinner so is boiling 2 eggs and has appointed me as his chopper person to chop celery & onion so off I go, chop-chop!

  14. We have thousands of visitors a day to our blog from all over the world but the only person to check in from abroad was from Canada! Who will be the first to leave a note furthest from the United States? The challenge is on!!!

    • Seems like you would have to speak fluent American English to get the puns — expats perhaps?

      • Folks from Cambodia, Russia, Israel, Japan, UAE, UK, Jamaica, etc, etc. The list is insane yet nobody has yet to leave a comment. It would be fun to hear from our Jumble friends that play abroad!

        • Mike, that is extremely interesting! I had no idea. Which is to say, I had no idea I was making a fool of myself before the entire world! πŸ™‚

  15. Mike, I’m thinking the same thing as Steve. Would the puns translate the same? And there’s always that “inflection” problem! πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • Expatriates or well educated followers. I know Angela has access to the “inner workings” and the views from abroad are incredible!

  16. Yes, they are. Now I’m curious. But a lot has to be said about the vernacular, the colloquialisms that some of us, just being from different regions of our own country don’t get. I think while we could be ROTFL over something, someone outside of the US would be like….Huh? Or it could also be that Steve scares a lot of people. πŸ˜€πŸ™‹πŸ»

    • I was worried…I thought the Sharks got you…me too, I’m calling it a day…and a half! I’m pitch hitting for Mike in the morning..I don’t want to get up there and look like I’m part of the Mets rotation! Oh, you can tell I’m tired..I’m knocking my ❀️ boys! Goodnight , Gracie. See you in the Sports pages….πŸ™‹πŸ»

  17. Oh ok, as long as it wasn’t those damn pesky sharks…Guaranteed I have nightmares about sharks now tonight. Got that damn sound from Jaws playing in my head! LOL…You made Mikes night with the Dan Hicks reference! He did good! Tonight they had Yogi Berra Museum night here in NYC. In the words of that immortal man, “It ain’t over till it’s over…”! Last call , it’s over. ….and yes, I am! Goodnight Gracie.
